The park-like area is named after James B. McPherson, a major general who fought in the Union Army during the American Civil War before he was killed at the Battle of Atlanta. The Society of the Army of the Tennessee presented an equestrian statue of McPherson, which was erected at McPherson Square and dedicated on October 18, 1876. The sculpture represents McPherson surveying a battlefield. It was made by Louis Rebisso out of a captured cannon and rests on a granite pedestal. HPIM7774

A number of organizations turned out their rank-and-file membership for the demonstration. Mostly, they consisted of the labor unions (the AFL-CIO, SEIU, UNITE-HERE, and NEA were prominent), as well as the local immigrant community organizations and their national umbrella groups--these distributed pre-printed placards where possible. Other groups merely distributed standard placards, which were suitably embellished by the marchers, such as this one here.

Nearing Lafayette Park and the White House. A family waves flags in support of the marchers. The crowd is so thick that the TV crews are filming from the tops of their broadcast vans to get some sense of the size.

This drummer kept going, despite his torn drumskin. Other drummers used 2 and 5-gallon plastic buckets, beating them with scrap lumber.
