Grain Belt Beer

Grain Belt Beer
Made by Steve Kocino
Grain Belt Golden, a traditional golden German-style lager, was popular, but Prohibition forced the company to stop production from 1920 until 1933. The company temporarily changed its name to Golden Grain Juice Company and, like many other brewers, turned to making near beer and soft drinks until repeal of the Eighteenth Amendment to the US Constitution. Grain Belt Beer returned to taverns in October 1933 with bottled beer reappearing in December. In 1975 new Grain Belt owner Irwin Jacobs sold the Grain Belt label and distribution network to G.Heileman Company, then the owner of the Schmidt Brewery. In 1990 the Schmidt Brewery was closed. But in 1991 a new group of investors formed the Minnesota Brewing Company, and brewed beers such as Landmark, Pig's Eye (named after St.Paul's Founding Father), and McMahon's Genuine Irish Potato Ale. The new owners also bought the rights to the Grain Belt label from Heileman (Lonto, Jeff. pp. 30-40). The Company joined a movement towards producing fuels from grains by opening Gopher State Ethanol on the site. Gopher State ferments corn to alcohol to be added to gasoline. This can be an even more odorous process than was beer brewing. Gopher State's odors have triggered numerous neighborhood complaints and lawsuits. In 2002 the brewery operations were closed, and the Grain Belt recipe and labels were sold to the Schell Brewery in New Ulm. Thus the Grain Belt Beer story, which started on Minneapolis' Brewery Flats, then went to NE Minneapolis, then migrated to St.Paul along Fort Road, has continued, still in Minnesota.

The now abandoned Schmidt Brewery building on West 7th Street in St. Paul, MN. This angle shows both the orginal Schmidt main building and Landmark sign. It was home to Schmidt brewing company from 1901 to 1955. G. Heilemann Brewing had the place in 1972 making the Old Style and Grain Belt line of barley pops. In1992 it was purchased by the Minnesota Brewing Company that made Landmark brand and (the cool for a short time) Pig's Eye brewskis. Sadly it's been empty since 2002.

The Minnesota Brewing Company used the property from 1991 to 2002. It has sat vacant since. There has been multiple proposals for redevelopment (condos, lofts, artist spaces) but was last seen on the market for 7.8 mildo. I hope they do something worthwhile with the property as it really is marvelous.

There was an event in the Rathskeller (Bavarian style beer hall) at the old Jacob Schmidt Brewery on West 7th. I wasn't interested in the event, I just wanted to see the Rathskeller again. I hadn't been there for years, since long before the brewery closed. Here's a shot of the old bar.

Two billboards form a corner at the beer bottle with a bus stop shelter in front of it, making it difficult to get a good shot. The billboards used to advertise the beer, but one of them is now for a redevelopment of the property that has since fallen through.

When the Jacob Schmidt Brewing Company closed in 1990, the Minnesota Brewing Company purchased the building in 1991. The Schmidt sign (now destroyed) was taken down and replaced by the new Landmark brand. The Minnesota Brewing Company closed its doors in 2002.

I used to take photos of the sing as an example of urban decay. It is on West 7th and Jefferson by the Schmidt Brewery. They left the bottle in place. I had to pull over and absorb the shock when I first saw this a couple of weeks ago.

What can I say? Nice and rusty and the shadow was a bonus. In the world of valve shooting . . and we all know I live in my own world this one is at least a 9 and a great addition to my growing collection of urban hardware.

Very effective. I felt welcomed. Probably a good place to take a nap in the nighttime. ------------- West 7th Street between Jefferson Avenue and Oneida Street in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Landmark was a beer brand introduced by Minnesota Brewery when that company took control of the former Schmidt's Brewery in St. Paul. The brand was a failure, as was Minnesota Brewery.

The building was constructed in 1855 for Christopher Stahlmann's Cave Brewery. The Cave Brewery went bankrupt in 1897 and Jacob Schmidt bought and expanded the property in 1900.

A beautiful old brewery near downtown Saint Paul, Minnesota. It looks to be in great shape, but I never see it working. I wonder if it's still in operation?

Parts of the brewery are being converted to high-end lofts, affordable...for working artists. That seems like a contradiction, but I guess we'll see.

Rechristened as the Landmark Brewery in the late 1990's, the site produced Grain Belt Premium and ethanol as fuel. The lights are now out.
