Schloss Ort

Schloss Ort (or Schloss Orth) is an Austrian castle situated in the Traunsee lake, near Gmunden and 19 km from Vöcklabruck, the gate to Salzkammergut. * It was founded around the year 1080 by Hartnidus of Ort, and improvements continued to be made by his descendants until 1244 by his descendant, Hartnidus V. They were government officers in Steiermark. * In 1244 the youngest sister Gisela of Ort was the owner. She was engaged to Albero of Velsperg. They moved to the Herren of Winkel. * In 1344 the brothers Friedrich and Reinprecht I of Wallsee purchased the castle. * January 25, 1350 Friedrich of Wallsee got the castle. * 1355 The sons Friedrich, Wolfgang and Heinrich of Wallsee inherited from him. * 1361 Heinrich von Wallsee became the single owner of the castle on August 3, 1361. He made an agreement that afterwards his youngest brother Reinprecht of Wallsee would replace him. * 1422 After the death of Reinprecht of Wallsee, his son Reinprecht II of Wallsee was the owner. * 1450 At the death Reinprecht II of Wallsee, the ownership went to Reinprecht II of Wallsee, his second son. * 1483 After the death of Reinprecht IV of Wallsee, the descendants of Wallsee had no more power, therefore Emperor Friedrich III took over the castle Schloss Ort. * 1484 Gotthard von Starhenberg, the Governor of Upper Austria, was the ruler until 1491. * 1492 Bernhard of Starhenberg and later his descendants were the rulers until 1584. * 1588 Weikhard Freiherr of Pollheim bought the castle. * 1595 He sold the castle on April 6, 1595 to the LANDESFÜRSTLICHE CITY GMUNDEN. * 1603 They sold to Emperor Rudolf II on April 21. Salzamtmann Veit Spindler took care the castle. * 1625 Graf Herberstorff, who was the Governor of Bavarian, city Enns, desired to be the owner.
