The monument of Major Franz Xaver Hackher zu Hart at the Schlossberg of Graz, a soldier from the Imperial Army of Francis II (the last Holy Roman emperor), who defended (well tried to defend, eventually Graz was conquered) Graz against Napoleon Bonaparte. His clever strategy is still honored by Graz and became a Lieutenant Colonel (and afterwards Colonel). Napoleon was not so amused about his archievement and demanded that the castle of Graz had to be deconstructed, and since then there is no castle of Graz anymore. In 1909 Otto Jarl made a monument for Major Hackher, the Hackher-Lion - there was no picture, painting or any document which would have given a single hint of Majors Hackhers physical appearance. This lion was given as a Adolf Hitler metal donation during the war at 1941 away and was melt down 1943. Eventually in 1966 a interpretation of the original Hackher-Lion was reinstalled at the Schlossberg. NOTE: This is one of the first pictures I've taken with a Leica-R 35mm Curtagon Shift-Lens. The Lens works fine but the 5D Mark II has some issues while metering. I have similar problems with the 19mm Elmarit-R, but which case I just have to underexpose 1 1/3 stops in matrix metering to get a correctly exposed picture. In the case of the shift lens it varies not only by the shift-length, but also by the direction of shift (up or down, right or left).

Graz [graːts] (etymologically from Slovenian: Gradec IPA: /gra.deʦ/, little castle), with a population of 287,723 as of 2006 (of which 250,099 have principal residence status), is the second-largest city in Austria after Vienna and the capital of the federal state of Styria (Steiermark [ˈʃtaɪ̯ɐmaʁk] in German). Graz has a long tradition as a student city: its six universities have over 40,000 students. Graz's Old Town is one of the best-preserved city centers in Central Europe. In 1999, it was added to the UNESCO list of World Cultural Heritage Sites. Graz was sole Cultural Capital of Europe for 2003.

The Hackher Monument has been erected in honour of the defence of the Schlossberg against Napoleon's troups in 1809 by Major Franz Xaver Freiherr von Hackher and a handful of soldiers. In fact, the Schlossberg fortress had never been occupied and was partially razed later only due to arrangements made in the Treaty of Schönbrunn.

Graz was the European Kulturhauptstadt (capital of culture) in 2003. To that occasion a shadow (a black tower of the same form) was added to the famous clocktower. Fly to this location (requires Google Earth)

Looking at the city of Graz from the Schlossberg. The church in the middle is the Herz Jesu Church. Looks interesting, think I have to go there to take some closer shots!

They built a new bar/restaurant atop of the mountain inside the city. From there you have a wonderful overview over all the tiny lights.

Rather than walking up the steep slopes the funicular is a nice alternative to get a view and get to the top quickly.
