St. Paul's Church

St. Paul's Church
Made by rangaku1976
Saint Paul's Church is a gothic church in Antwerp. The church was built in 1571 by a Dominican order and was named after the Dominican order's patron saint, Paulus. In 1679 a fire destroyed most of the church and the tower had to be rebuilt. During the French revolution many paintings were stolen, but they were returned after the revolution in 1815. The church was damaged again during the Belgian revolution in 1830 and the last disaster was in 1968, when a fire destroyed the roof and much of the interior. Most of the interior was saved by passers-by or people living in the neighborhood. It took about 20 years to restore the roof. The church which has a baroque interior houses a large collection of 17th century paintings of Flemish masters and a large number of wooden sculptures. Several ornately decorated altars flank the main altar in front of the apse. The St. Paul's church is also home to one of the most important organs in Flanders. In a small courtyard next to the church there is a very impressive calvary, unique in the world. It consists of 63 statues depicting the last days of Christ.

Hessenhuis, Antwerpen

Hessenhuis, Antwerpen
Made by Erf-goed.be
Foto: Francois Van Nerum

Kids university

Kids university
Made by bhenkk
Today the University of Antwerp organised kinderuniversiteit = kids university. This means an opportunity for kids between 8 and 14 to explore sciences (from physics to languages and back). Abbie and Pippa absolutely loved it, the best part for the was the sciences show in cooperation with Technopolis, which is the Flemish science museum. We have seen a chips gun, have seen where the different colours of fire works come from and how you can create a huge amount of bubbles in a matter of seconds with the help of H2O2 and a catalyst. Spectacular indeed, we all (grown up and kids alike) loved it!

Saint Paul’s Church was originally part of a vast Dominican cloister. It was consecrated in 1571 as a replacement for a previous house of worship. After the fire of 1679, a new baroque tower was built. The magnificent interior comprises more than 50 paintings by famous Antwerp masters such as Rubens, Van Dyck, and Jordaens; over 200 sculptures, and splendid baroque altars and carved church furnishings, which are some of the most beautiful in the world. A giant cure for cynism

A giant cure for cynism

…the most enchanting, spectacular, beautiful piece of fairytale that I think I'll ever see. I have the strangest feeling today, something in between grief and joy, sad that I will never see that beautiful Little Giant or that gargantuan Elephant and happy that I had the privilege to meet them. Thank you for reminding me how to be a child and for realising that cynicism is not a way of life! A Londoner, 8th May 2006 (but it could've easily been me) www.thesultanselephant.com/

March 16 2007: Zeemanshuis Revisited

March 16 2007: Zeemanshuis Revisited
Made by Nils Geylen
Exactly 3 years ago I uploaded here in Antwerp. It was destined for demolition. Campaigns, fundraisers and petitions ensued and finally my pic was among a number of art objects auctioned in support of the cause. Now the building is still there (not entirely saved yet apparently) and new action is being taken to find a new purpose for the modernist construction. I took a new picture, this time with cameraphone, this time not so grand, but still.

I am not into self-portraits and I try to avoid finding myself on the receiving end of a camera lens, but a shot was called for to use on the dust-jacket of an upcoming book I am finalizing -- and this is it. My Aussie friends might notice the St Kilda FC emblem -- but I am not a big Aussie Rules fan, just fighting the cold in Antwerp. Acknowledgements to Mike of Profotoshoot for the shot.

Afspanning 't Waagstuk

Though it doesn't have the same amount of beer, this is a more enjoyable beer cafe than Kulminator or Arsenaal. I had some spinach soup with cheese and green olives on the side, and enjoyed a Belgian strong ale called Zeppelin, which is bottled especially for this cafe. It's located near the University, so the area is a bit more interesting than central Antwerp.

Boon Faro

One of the better faros enjoyed at Afspanning t' Waagstuk in Antwerp. Faro is typically unblended lambic sweetened with brown sugar, and many consider them a simpler, more commercial offering from the lambic brewers. Many taste like apple soda, but a few (3 Fonteinen, Cantillon, Boon, Girardin) are actually quite tasty.

Foto: Francois Van Nerum

Was moving these for a holiday job I was doing today, found this such a surreal sight I wanted to photograph them. Sadly no proper camera at hand and the mobile phone isn't too willing anymore either, but still kind of captured it I suppose... Next stop, Glasgow!
