Remembrance of the Dead ( of the Dutch: Dodenherdenking) is held annually on May 4 in the Netherlands. It commemorates all civilians and members of the armed forces of the Kingdom of the Netherlands who have died in wars or peacekeeping missions since the outbreak of Worldwar II. Traditionally, the main ceremonies are observed in Amsterdam at the National Monument on Dam Square. This ceremony is usually attended by members of the cabinet and the Royal family, military leaders, representatives of the resistance movement and other social groups. At 8:00 p.m., two minutes of silence are observed throughout the Netherlands. Public transport is stopped, as well as all other traffic. Radio and TV only broadcast the ceremonies from 19.00 until 20.30. Since May 4, 1994, the flags, having hung at half-staff during the day, are then hoisted to the music of the Wilhelmus, the Dutch national anthem. Since 2001 the new protocol says it is correct to let the flag hang half-staff. The main celebrations in Amsterdam are broadcast by the public broadcasting company NOS, but there are ceremonies in other cities and places as well. Especially notable are those at the Waalsdorpervlakte near the Hague, where many Dutch resistance fighters were executed during the war, and at the war cemetery Grebbeberg, which are broadcast by the commercial broadcasting companies. In many towns, before or after the two minutes of silence, people gather around a monument, listen to speeches, and lay down flowers to remember the dead. Dit beeld, Sirene, van de beroemde beeldhouwer Jean Arp (1886-1966) maakte deel uit van de tentoonstelling Against Nature in Beelden aan zee. Deze boeiende expositie was echter niet de reden dat ik mij afgelopen woensdag in het museum bevond. Echte reden was een jazzconcert. Pianist Michiel Borstlap was door Stichting Prospero uitgenodigd de nieuwe reeks “Jazz aan zee” in te luiden. Beelden aan zee als nieuwe concertlocatie bleek een gouden greep. In de prachtige, open ruimte van het museum was tussen de bronzen beelden een vleugel geplaatst. Borstlap speelde solo. Hij begon met een lange improvisatie waarin hij losjes enkele standards citeerde. Lange, zachte noten vulden de ruimte en gingen een dialoog aan met de sculpturen. Adembenemend. Een concentratie van esthetiek als het ware. Na dit eerste nummer kon het concert eigenlijk al niet meer stuk. Er volgden nog enkele originele improvisaties die zich perfect schikten in de intieme setting. Door de ramen boven ons was te zien hoe de hemel langzaam zwart tekende. Toen ik naar huis fietste, was ik vol van muziek en kunst. Een avond die ik niet snel zal vergeten. De volgende concerten zullen te midden van andere tentoonstellingen gespeeld worden. Westbroekpark

Het Westbroekpark maakte voor 1860 deel uit van een bebost duingebied, ook wel binnenduinbos genoemd. Een aannemer bood de Haagse gemeenteraad aan deze duinen kosteloos af te graven en het land teelbaar af te leveren, waarbij het afgegraven zand elders kon gebruikt worden voor ophoging. Het voorstel van die aannemer werd door de gemeenteraad aanvaard en zo ontstond er op deze plek een weiland. In de jaren hierna werden diverse ontwerpen gemaakt voor de aanleg van een park. De heer Westbroek, toenmalige directeur van Gemeenteplantsoenen, ontwierp begin jaren ’20 de hoofdlijnen van het “Nieuwe Park” aan de Nieuwe Parklaan. Zijn ontwerp werd in 1926 voltooid. Ter nagedachtenis aan de inmiddels overleden heer Westbroek werd het park tot het Westbroekpark gedoopt. Het park heeft grote speelweiden, vijvers en watergangen. Door de losstaande boomgroepen en de schilderachtige doorkijkjes doet het denken aan een Engels park. Het Westbroekpark staat vooral bekend om de prachtige rozentuin: het in 1960 aangelegde Internationaal Rosarium. Hier bloeien tussen juni en eind oktober 20.000 rozenstruiken op ongeveer 300 bedden. Scheveningen, Holland View on black The Kurhaus is a prominent building located in Scheveningen,The Hague in The Netherlands It was built between 1884 and 1885 by the German architects Johann Friedrich Henkenhaf and Friedrich Ebert (architect). It consisted originally of a concert hall and a hotel with 120 rooms. Having suffered serious damage by fire, it was rebuilt between 1886 and 1887. The ceilings were painted by the Brussels artist Van Hoeck and his large workshop. Several kings and heads of state sojourned in the Kurhaus during its heyday. Until the 1960s the Kurhaus remained an attraction to the public by the many performances of top artists. One of the last performances was by the Rolling Stones in 1965. Fallen into disrepair and closed in 1969, the Kurhaus was saved from demolition in 1975 by being listed as a historical building. It is now completely renovated into the high-class Steigenberger Kurhaus Hotel (the only hotel in the Netherlands of the German hotel chain Steigenberger Hotel Group) and casino. First time I go to the beach with my son. So cute, he didnt move in the first time, hands up and just looking around with big eyes. The sand feels strange at his feet. He is laughing because I where running as a fool around him while his grandma for the first time holding a reflection screen and beamed all ships to the harbour . ( I can see she did a great job on this picture) After an half an hour he didnt want to leave and loves the freedom .. the sand and getting dirty. Bassist Frans van der Hoeven during the concert with the Jasper Blom Quartet in Museum Beelden aan zee, . Van der Hoeven, who has played with some major jazz musicians like Johnny Griffin, Art Farmer, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Jack deJohnette and Mike Del Ferro, is probably the most sought after jazz bassist in the Netherlands. Personally I wasn't only struck by his concentrated playing, but also by the beautiful light and the sharp contrasts that created a very intimate atmosphere around him. As a result I took a lot of photos of him during the concert. This one is the most telling and intense, I think.

Since I'll be leaving the country and my job in two weeks my friend and colleague Maaike suggested we'd spend an afternoon together. We looked at the sculptures along the Lange Voorhout boulevard, had lunch at a well known pub in The Hague (Bodega de Posthoorn), and then went on to Scheveningen to visit the museum 'Beelden aan zee' (sculptures at sea). We ended this nice afernoon with a glass of Chardonnay at the . Thank you Maaike, for being such a nice colleague and friend. I will surely miss you! This mask, named Thuski-no-hikari (meaning Light of the Moon), is one of the sculptures belonging to the museum.
