Thanks Statue of Saint Lucia inside the church. The Church of San Nicolò, which is improperly called the Church of Saint Lucia, due to the statue of the patron saint of Savoca that is kept there (the statue of San Nicolò was sold), dates back to the beginning of the thirteenth century. Built on a massive rocky spike, it seems to stretch out into the air. The church that today appears with a nave and two aisles and has the vague appearance of a fortress overlooking the valley below, it was once served by Greek chaplains. This is where Michael Corleone and Apollonia Vitelli were married in The Godfather movie.

Thanks The Church of St. Michael dates back to 1308. This was the church of the castle Pantefur, the ruins are above the church. The church suffered notable damage in 1635 when it was closed. At the beginning of 1700 one nave, the roof and bell tower were rebuilt. It contains works of art, family tombs and several frescos. It was not open for me to go inside.

Thanks This use to be the ancient seat of the Town Hall. It was three stories in the 18th century when the Knight Verdura owned it. At the beginning of the 19th century it was no longer used as the Town Hall. In 1908 after a earthquake it was damaged. It was also used as a prison and that is why there are wrought iron bars in the window.

Thanks Bar Vitelli in Savoca (the area in green plants), which is still a functioning establishment, was featured in the motion picture as the place where Michael Corleone asked Apollonia's father to meet his daughter. While here I met the owner, Signora María, who was actually there when the movie was shot.

In the distance, on the hill in the middle of the photograph, is Chiesa di Santa Lucia. This is the church where Michael and Apollonia were married in the movie The Godfather. Our tour guide pointed this out to us as we rode past the city of Savoca on the bus from Messina, Italy to Taormina, Italy.
