Geiser Steam Tractor

Geiser Steam Tractor
Made by John H Bowman
View Large Geiser steam tractor -- or traction engine; note the firewood in the bins behind the driver. Many pieces of early agricultural equipment were displayed and demonstrated during Pion-Era Days at the Western Development Museum in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan (Canada) when we visited with my brother and sister-in-law in July 2008. Peter Geiser (1826-1901) is the inventor of the thresher, which he patented in 1852 and soon after began producing for sale. Geiser Manufacturing Company was incorporated in 1869 and operated in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania. It is said the firm produced steam tractors between 1881 and 1912. Online sources, however, indicate Geiser's farm implements were branded with the Peerless name, which I could not see on this engine, although it clearly is a Geiser product. A closer view of the front of the boiler is shown in the first photo below, while the second provides a similar view of a J. I. Case steam tractor, also at Pion-Era Days.

Meewasin Queen

Meewasin Queen
Made by sambasupernova
The 35-passenger Meewasin Queen is a 3-season tour boat with lounge-style seating, catered meals, heated cabin, toilet, bar service, and features an upper deck affords a great vantage point from which to see the river. She was built in Selkirk, Manitoba in 1969 for use on the Red River and Netley Marsh. She was originally named the Lady Chesley and worked out of Chesley Resorts near Clandeboye as well as on the rivers in downtown Winnipeg. She was purchased in the autumn of 2007 by Shearwater Properties Ltd, and spent the winter of that year undergoing an overall re-fit. Made entirely of steel, she is 44 feet long, 12 feet wide, and draws 2.5 feet of water. She is powered by a new (2008) 225 hp Tier II Volvo diesel engine, has a dry weight of just under 15 tons, and a registered tonnage of 22 tons. -Shear water tours. Located in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. On the South Saskatchewan river.

Model T Pickup - Special Dual-use Rear Wheels

Model T Pickup - Special Dual-use Rear Wheels
Made by John H Bowman
View Large Unusual rear wheels on this Ford Model T pickup include rubber treads on the inboard side, combined with heavy metal cleats on the outer edge, much like the rear wheel of the tractor in the preceding photo; the combination appears to equip the vehicle for use on paved roads (only the rubber treads would meet the road) or on muddy or rutted surfaces without having to change tires/wheels or add chains or other traction-promoting decives. Perhaps this sort of adaptation was fairly common in some places, but I don't recall having seen such wheels before. Like the two old tractors shown in the preceding photos, this vehicle was seen at Pion-Era Days at the Western Development Museum in Sasksatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, in July 2008.

evidence of marissa

evidence of marissa
Made by Kevin Steele
My brother (above) and I were walking around Saskatoon, on streets we both grew up on, but at very different times. Marlon pointed down at the sidewalk, where he and a true love had left their names in fresh cement, a few years earlier. Marissa was sweet and smart and still figuring out who she wanted to be when she died, accidentally, a casualty of drugs and prairie boredom. --------- Submitted to the group at the end of July 2005. Please check out the group’s description before taking offense at any comments. While some would say it was in bad taste to submit this picture to the pool, given the treatment the DeleteMe’s are capable of, they behaved rather well, even though they didn’t buy it.

শুভ নববর্ষ (Happy Bengali New Year)

শুভ নববর্ষ (Happy Bengali New Year)
Made by Sleep Walker ..
I wanted to upload something to greet the first day of Bengali Calendar Year, and I took a long walk this afternoon. But to my foolish curiosity and disappointment, What I found was all bloody dead and gray. Then I tried my own way to blend some color with a flower, which would better be told as a replica of a living dead flower, and came up with this shot. Afternoon sun really made my shot with a parked red car in the background..Probably nothing special in the shot, but I just had to upload something colorful to greet Pohela Boishakh...Shuvo Noboborsho Shobaike... Little Chief Community Station

Little Chief Community Station
Made by daryl_mitchell
Built by the Texaco oil company in 1929, this eye-catching building was known as the West Side Service Station until 1943, when it was changed to the Little Chief Service Station. This is the only commercial example of Spanish Colonial architecture in Saskatoon, and only one of two in all of Saskatchewan. After it ceased to be a service station, the Saskatoon Police Service obtained and renovated the building for use as a reporting station. The building was designated a municipal heritage property in 2003. The building was part of the 2009 Doors Open Saskatoon event.

You fill up my senses like a night in the forest like the mountains in springtime, like a walk in the rain like a storm in the desert, like a sleepy blue ocean you fill up my senses, come fill me again. Come let me love you, let me give my life to you let me drown in your laughter, let me die in your arms let me lay down beside you, let me always be with you come let me love you, come love me again.... Pat's lily

Pat's lily
Made by John H Bowman
View Large This lily was in my sister-in-law's garden when we visited in Saskatoon (Saskatchewan) last July. It had rained quite recently and I liked the water on the petals. I neglected to ask what variety of lily this is, and a quick Google search didn't tell me -- so it's just Pat's lily. (Pat says, by Saturday e-mail, that this lily is called Silly Girl.)

This is part of a big painting that I found when I was volunteering in Research Celebration Workshop at the School of Education in U of S...just liked this part...but can't decide on a title Well, In search of a title, I looked into some of my poems that I wrote 4-5 years back, and all of a sudden this line struck in my mind...so, I picked the line as a title.. Big Guns

Big Guns
Made by krystian_o
OK, those are not gun barrels aiming for the sky. Those are actually white lamp posts planted all together near a theater. Only post-processing that I did here was some color adjustments. I tried leveling the poles and cropping, but it actually made the shot too boring. Angled composition makes it more interesting. All though I'm still breaking the Rule of Thirds :) Oh, and.... I love comments :)

Love Letters.. If you have one, post it here!! and enjoy this song from the movie Khamoshi (The Silence), first movie by the famed Bollywood director Sanjay Bansali...this movie failed to make any impact in the Bollywood box office (and I never cared about that), but I still admire his work in this movie...

Sun dog over Saskatoon.

Sun dog over Saskatoon.
Made by AloneAlbatross
It was a cool -31 this morning and the sun dogs were dancing in the sky this morning. I've never seen them in Saskatoon before today and they brought a smile to my face as I froze my hands trying to capture them with my camera. View Large Richmond's high Monday was 50 (average for date, 59), today's is to be low 40s. Thinking of warmer weather, I came up with this July delphinium photo. It was taken at the Forestry Farm Park in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, a short distance from my brother's house.

Sturdy Stone Centre

Sturdy Stone Centre
Made by daryl_mitchell
The 13-floor Sturdy Stone Centre was built in 1977. The blockish form of the building and the exposed concrete-like exterior make it a good example of the Brutalist style of architecture. The building is actually clad in smooth-sawn Tyndall stone (Red River dolomitic limestone). Floors 3 to 7 are a parkade, while the rest of the space is for offices.

Airplane Graveyard

Airplane Graveyard
Made by Jordon
A bunch of decommisioned Fokker F-28 airplanes that used to belong to Canadian Regional Airlines are parked and abandoned outside a hanger in Saskatoon. Wendy and I took some shots of them before they deteriorate any more. The logos and markings had been painted over but several years in the elements have faded and washed them off.
