Havaya kalkmış bir el, burun kısımları içe doğru bakan kırmızı kurdeleli ayakkabı giydirilmiş ayaklar, dantel, bisküvi, çay, pırasa, işkembe filan böyle teker teker objeleri bu aralar hepimiz çekiyoruz. Ters ışıkla çekiyoruz, düz ışıkla çekiyoruz, aynadan çekiyoruz, odaklamasını bozarak çekiyoruz vs vs. Yapmayalım demiyorum, yine yapalım, ama bunları sanat, fotoğrafçılık dehalarının örnekleri filan olarak görmeyelim; göstermeyelim. Kandırmayalım kendimizi. Bize hoş şeyler hatırlatıyorlar, doğru. Dantelli örtüsü olan bir masanın üzerindeki porselen çay fincanı ve dumanı ve yanında ne bileyim pudra şekerli bir kurabiye filan bize güzel şeyler hatırlatır, hayal kurmamızı sağlar; kendi kenarları kırılmış, boyaları dökülmüş kupalarımızdan çok daha güzel oldukları için şöyle hafifçe başımızı yana eğerek ufak bir gülümsemeyle öyle bir dünyada (o dantel ve fincanların olduğu ve kullanıldığı, çeyize saklanmadığı) yaşamayı hayal ederiz. Falan filan, daha o kadar uzatırım ki bu lafı. Sadede geleyim. Bu fotoğrafı ve dianayla çektiğim çoğu fotoğrafı, yukarıdaki gibi saiklerle (hayal kurma, anılarımı saklama, bana yakın olan şeyleri sevip saydığım insanlara gösterme, hoş ve estetik olanı beğenmeye meyletme) çekiyor ve buraya koyuyorum; en yukarıdaki gibilere (fotoğrafçılık tekniği ve sanatı bağlamında değerli olmak açısından) değil. Niyeyse böyle bir savunma yapmak istedim. Socrates değilim ama ben de kendimi savunabilirim. Daha fazla saçmalamadan, Hoşça kalın.

I can't recommend highly enough the excellent book 'Gypsy Boy' by Mikey Walsh, which gives a fascinating insight into the lives of Romanies in modern day (well mainly 1980's and 1990's) Britain as well as his own personal struggle with not meeting the expectations of his father. It is published by Hodder and can be bought for just 4 pounds 39 pence from amazon.co.uk in book form.
