Santiago's Casa de la Trova is the heartbeat of the Cuban music scene, a venue offering high-quality music day and night. Music forms the soundtrack to everyday life in Cuba, an almost constant accompaniment wherever you go. Listen hard enough and you'll usually be able to hear one of the island's many genres of music coming from somewhere. Rooted in Spanish and West African music, Cuba has been responsible for son, changui, rumba, conga, mambo, trova, nueva trova, son montuno, guaguanco, charanga (with Haiti), columbia, yambú, batá, yuka, timba, danzon, comparsa, cha cha cha, areito, guajira, son-batá, mozambique, batá-rumba, rockoson and música campesina as well as making a huge contribution to jazz, salsa, tango, highlife, afrobeat and nuevo flamenco. Not a beautiful picture, not even a well-executed one, but an important topic. Like most large cities, Santiago di Cuba also has a seedy underside and, apparently, many fewer controls than we might expect to see in the West. On a number of occasions, we were shocked to encounter men, almost always Italian, who had travelled to Cuba with the express purpose of spending time with very young girls. I have come across this in other cities, notably in Phnom Penh in Cambodia, but nowhere was it more evident than in Santiago. Those I tried to speak to neither seemed to understand nor care about what they were doing. This saddened me because I otherwise enjoyed Santiago more than anywhere else I visited in Cuba. Its people, the Santiagueros, had a warmth and vitality that will remain with me at length and I was charmed by its ever-present musical soundtrack.

I was sitting in the plaza at Cienfugos having my usual afternoon cigar when a boy walked past with a bunch of bananas. I'd been looking for bananas for a few days but couldn't find any at the market and had a bit of a craving. He said they were for his Mother, but handed me too anyway, smiled and walked off. Later he came back with his friend who had this pet rooster. It seems lots of people have pet roosters in Cuba. A popular quiet spot with a view in Santiago de Cuba, Cuba. It looks over the Tivoli neighborhood. It is said that in the times of Spanish conquest, the water level was higher here and the bay covered this region to the feet of this balcony. The Balcon was once part of a small Spanish fort. El Balcon de Velazquez es un lugar tranquilo desde donde mirar la ciudad. Se dice que en los tiempos de la conquista, la costa de la bahia llegaba hasta los pies de este balcon, que formaba parte de un pequeño fuerte español. Toda esta zona que ahora es el barrio del Tivoli sen ancontraba bajo el agua.

Single RAW HDR Update: I just saw this image in my work computer, where I hadn't changed Firefox's color management profile, and it looks COMPLETELY different. The colors seem pale and the sky looks violet. What a difference when I changed gfx.color_management.mode to 2! Now I can see it as I left it out of photoshop.
