Bruce Kemper's U-72, Bruce and Lady Grudnick. This shot from about 15 years ago, the day before Lady Grudnick flew a rare Bucker-Jungmann over the Pacific. It happened like this. My Uncle Bill lives a few hundred yards off of the Santa Monica Airport's runway. Cindy, who had recently received her FAA license for single engine planes, was intrigued by many of the esoteric flying machine that buzzed over our heads. They met this congenial gent in greasy jumper working under this beautiful Bi-Plane, a rather rare Bucker-Jungmann, about a dozen are known to be in flying condition, then they started to chat, and he offered to let her fly the thing. Thank you Bruce Kemper!

Testing the speedlight setup on the ground before we get in the air. Strobist Info: Canon 580EXII at 1/2 power with the built in diffuser. Triggered with Pocket Wizards. Speedlight is laying on the copilot's side of the dashboard. Not sure what went wrong when we were in the air, but it didn't work when shooting between two airplanes. This was taken in Santa Monica airport, on a bright, sunny day. Although I normally would try to keep the subject off to the side, I placed the airplane in the center of the frame, as I was concentrating on the city skyline. The airplane was a bonus for me. This was post-processed to give it an old-style kodakrome print feel, with old-fashioned rounded edges, almost a 1960's look.

Douglas DC-3 on display at the Santa Monica Airport. Formerly N596AR, she now wears N242SM. At night, all of the outside marker lights are on, even the rotating red light underneath. A light in the cockpit is on, too. A very cool display of a beautiful aircraft.
