Day 75 - Robert Sir
Made by -Clearlight-
It was after 8:00 p.m. when I went out tonight looking for today's image. I was tired and not really that motivated to be out, but I knew that I wanted something other than another neon sign to add to the collection. So, I decided to go to downtown Santa Monica, to the 3rd Street Promenade, to see what might be going on. I parked the truck on 2nd St., took out the camera, and walked around the corner on to Santa Monica Blvd, toward 3rd. I had not gone even half way up the block when I noticed him standing against a wall. There was hardly any light and, at first I walked by a few steps, but then stopped and turned back. He wasn't playing at the time but I motioned with the camera and asked him if I could take a picture. One dollar, he said. Knowing that I had only a Ten in my pocket, I asked him if he had change and he gave me a nod which I thought meant that he did. So I stepped back and began to adjust the settings on the camera for a portrait shot in almost no light. Then he said to me that he wanted to be paid first. So I reached in my pocket and handed him the Ten and it was only than that I realized that he was hearing impaired and had not really understood when I asked if he had change. We looked at each other for a few seconds and then he said, OK, you owe me and put the trumpet to his lips and started playing a few bars while I took this shot. He didn't play long and as soon as I took the camera away from my eye he stopped. At that point I told him I would see him on the way back and I went to a shop and bought two pretzels, then walked right back to where he was standing. With that, his eyes lit up and he said, You came back! and I handed him not the one dollar that he asked for, but two dollars and one of the pretzels (which he declined because of his high blood pressure). At this point I asked him his name and he told me it was Robert. I introduced myself and we started to talk with him mostly lip-reading. As it turns out, Robert's home town is Chicago but he has been out on the west coast for twenty-some years. It was after he moved out here that he lost his hearing. When I asked him what happened, he started talking about a combination of getting old, playing loud music, and hitting his head in the days when he used to drink a lot. I asked what kind of trumpet it was that he was playing and he told me that it is called a 'pocket trumpet.' He uses it, he said, when he plays on the street because it does not stick out as the people pass by. We talked for a while longer about his talent agent and some of the auditions to which he has gone. Then, using the monitor on the back of my camera, I showed him the images I had captured and he was adamant that if I made any money with his picture that I would have to pay him. To which, of course, I agreed. With that I asked if he wouldn't mind a couple more shots and he said yes, only this time he dropped the trumpet and just turned to me with a smile. Thank you Robert. It was a pleasure meeting you. Explored - March 16, 2010 #374

Day6- LA
Made by inanutshell
After getting high on nature and its beauty and not hitting an interstate for 5 days ..we finally hit the interstate..and then started the traffic for the next 100 miles all the way to LA proper...it was almost depressing. After spending the afternoon in hollywood and taking the customary shots of Kodak theater and the Hollywood sign and all that nonsense..decided to catch the sunset over Santa Monica beach..and as we drove down on Santa Monica blvd guess what happens.. the famous LA traffic happens.Needless to say the sun was gone by the time i hit the beach..took this while trying to scramble to the beach to get something out of the fast fading light. And yeah can someone please tell me why taking a picture using a tripod is not allowed at some places for security reasons while u can take the pictures of the same place without a tripod ?? this holds true for NYC subways and the damn area with the ferris wheel on the pier at Santa Monica beach where i was confronted by security who kindly told me - no tripods..and if i wanted to take pictures without one i could sign a form and use the camera..which i politely declined..upon which he announced my name on his walkie talkie crap to all other security personnel mentioning that i shouldnt be allowed to take pictures in the Ferris wheel area. It gets better...after that he politely showed me a spot about 20ft away from the ferris wheel ride entrance and told me that use of tripods was allowed beyond that point. So i smiled politely..set up my tripod..zoomed in and took my shot! All this crap when all i wanted was the standard moving ferris wheel shot!! uuurrrghhh!!! eefffin morons! ---------------------------------------------------------- Day5 log- Places Visited- LA Pit Stop- LA Miles added- 48 Time wasted in damn LA traffic- priceless!

Big trouble
Made by jakerome
After walking through Circuit City and finding nothing worthwhile, I headed back outside of the Santa Monica storefront onto 4th St. There, I decided to take a few photos of the nicely arrayed STORE CLOSING Sale! signs. As I took the first picture from the public sidewalk, an employee told me I couldn't take photos. I calmly informed him that I could since I was on a public sidewalk and continued shooting. He asked me some more questions and I ignored him and continued to photograph the signs. Then he got on the phone to call someone-- I thought he was trying to intimidate me, but maybe not. After getting bored taking photos of the signs in the store, I began walking back to 3rd St. Promenade. The employee was still on the phone. As I told him to have a nice day (really, I wan't even being snide, it was my way of letting him know I was leaving), he said to me, they'll be coming to get you soon! And with that I spontaneously laughed out loud and got a little ticked for the first time. I wasn't really worried about the Santa Monica PD coming to arrest me, no matter what story he told them-- the cops here are professional and understand the laws about photography as well as I do. What ticked me off was he was still trying to intimidate me. At that point I took a couple photos of him for the first time, until he hid behind a utility box. The cops haven't chased me down yet. type design busking on 3rd st
Made by Stewf
After his presentation earlier in the day, Hrant offered up his idea of joining other buskers on 3rd St Promanade. I'm taking my laptop, putting down a hat, and making fonts until the battery dies. Eben answered the call and we followed the two to their places across from each other on the busy pedestrian walkway. Several passersby stopped and showed interest. Some officials questioned the legality of their setup but eventually left them alone. Two cops paused to ask what they were up to. Jackson told them: I think they are making fonts. Somebody's gotta do it, the cop said as be took a sip of his coffee and walked away. Photos: campl.us/hp4

And we will feast on these lights.

Shine On
Made by !architect4!
Shine On by Leah Houghton Don't look back at all those times you failed - They are in the past And can not be changed. Don't look back on the painful losses - They were not meant to be anyway. Don't look back and cry over lost time - For you are just wasting more time and contradicting yourself. Don't look back on everything you didn't get - Focus on what you have And how blessed you are to have them. Don't look back and regret falling in love - You enjoyed it while it lasted. Shine on and don't look back. My photos in :

Tomato Convention
Made by P-Kittye
At the farmer's market I saw these tomatoes. They looked like they were turned toward one another in several different groups, conversing with each other. This photo was taken with a film camera and developed into prints, something I have not done in a loooong time. I liked playing with the way the light and reflections were different from those I get when using my digital camera. You can really see the lights and shadows in the large size. Shot with a Canon EOS Rebel G.

3rd Street Promenade, Santa Monica
Made by Phu Son
This picture was taken handheld with 3 different exposures (-2, 0, +2 ev). The 3 exposures were auto tone-mapped to achieve the HDR look. I then manually tone-mapped the HDR image together with the original 3 exposures to get the final image you see here. I was lucky to capture these exposures before the clouds completely took over the twilight sky. See larger size

Chicken Tikka Masala
Made by Crashworks
The NDI programmers take a traditional weekly lunch at Akbar's Indian Restaurant in Santa Monica. It's gotten to the point that the waitress doesn't even bother handing out menus -- she simply asks, the usual, right?, and bam, out come half a dozen dishes. Here, the signature dish that keeps us coming back: Akbar's chicken tikka masala (level 3). Authenticated as Real Chicken Curry by 100% of our British programmers.

Strelitzia
Made by jver64
After flying from winterly New York City to Los Angeles into a mild climate I stayed in Santa Monica for two days. The plants that are growing all around are fascinating. This Strelitzia is native to South Africa so it's not as Californian as I thought it would be. Actually I have found it at Santa Monica's Palisades Park. But it's so beautiful. And if you touch it at the right spot it would open up its blossom.

Ocean Sunset
Made by Geekstalt
Explore #146 for December 30, 2008. Sunset from the cliffs above Santa Monica Beach. Best . On a white background most of the foreground is lost in shadows because of the contrast. Looks much better when in large on black. Getting a weird artefact from GIMP. When I reduced the size the green colour in the leaves became a haze around the foliage. It's most pronounced in the trees in the lower left. Weird.

? WTF ?

No really, wtf?! UPDATE: Thanks to my cousin, I have uncovered the mystery of this crocheted wonder-bike. It's the work of a Polish artist by the name of Olek, who crochets a lot more than just bicycles. Here are some links - Link 1, Link 2.

Orchard with blue chairs
Made by nowhereonearth
A backyard orchard & potager garden in Santa Monica, California. Besides the arbor, there are orange, pomegranate, and persimmon trees, and two rectangular vegetable plots ( the edge of one is visible along the pathway inside the gate). The rustic gate is made of wired-together grapevine trimmings.
