Child, Sandakan, August 2010

Child, Sandakan, August 2010
Made by JediSavant
I'll bite with this month's self-erudition of the photo taking diatribe: Sandakan is on the East-Coast of Sabah, a state in the federation of Malaysia, formerly known as British North Borneo. Flattened by Japanese forces during WWII, Sandakan was the launching point of 2 death marches in which scores of British, Australian and New Zealander troops perished. This child is a resident of Sim Sim Village, a stilt borne water village on the beach, facing a former leper colony. I was simply wandering around after an excellent breakfast of fresh fish and noodles, and came across her while heading back to the car park. The sun was harsh, and there was only a fraction of thought behind this photograph, instinct simply took over, the scene framed and exposed and she disappeared beneath the bridge. The large SUVs are de-riguer in a land where roads are crummy and potty. Sandakan070810_PCL0023 copy

Pygmy Elephant - Sandakan, Malaysia

Pygmy Elephant - Sandakan, Malaysia
Made by whl.travel
The Bornean Pygmy elephants at the Lower Kinabatangan have a seasonal migration pattern which involves roaming up one side of the river sourcing food before swimming across the river and travelling back down to the other side. Sukau Rainforest Lodge incorporated 2 gaps or ' elephant pass' along its 1500 ft Hornbill Boardwalk, to support the elephants' migration pattern. (By Georgette Mueller) www.sandakan-travel.com

One of the biggest threats to the lower Kinabatangan is the choking of the waterways by this water hyacinth type vegetation known as Salvinia. The only ways know to eradicate are 1) pulling it out by hand 2) the endagered pygmy elephants pull it out as they make their way along the river getting food. 3) there is a boll weevil that can naturally keep the weed at manageable levels. However with the use of pesticides in nearby palm oil plantations, much of the boll weevil population has been lost, thus... owbox lakes covered in the stuff. see www.leapspiral.org and MESCOT project to find out the success of the village in eradicating salvinia molesta from their lake Date taken :0000/00/00 00:00:00 Image size :1600 x 1200 Resolution :300 x 300 dpi Number of bits :8bit/channel

So, i'm back!! :) I couldn't decide which one of the picture is better so i posted all three of them. I usually takes a very long time to choose picture to post in flickr. The 1st picture was taken just before the the sun appeared, and the two was taken few minutes later. Its amazing to see the weather changed in just a few minutes. By the way, this is a SUNRISE. I was in Sandakan for the past days, its located on the north-eastern coast of Borneo and the city is facing the ocean that is why the 'sunrise' picture. Happy Sunday all :) - Gnd filter was attached on the lens to get a well balanced FG and BG. I did the editing on contrast and wb adjustment in sony image adobe, the rest was done in photoshop: shadow/highlight (1% and 2%), unsharp mask after resizing and also some cloning to remove the dust. The horizon also corrected in photoshop.

The lake is 98% clear! MESCOT group of Batu Putih cleared this oxbow lake of salvinia molesta over the past year... the wildlife is returning to this previously dead lake. A beautiful sight that moved me to tears, as the last time i was here the lake was entirely covered with salvinia. Explored :) This was taken at the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary in Sabah. It was feeding time. I'm not sure, but I think the trainers have actually trained several of them to walk along the rail on the way to the feeding station. It was a rush to be so close. Here's a link if you want to know more about these beautiful animals. www.sabah.edu.my/srm012.wcdd/BM/menu1.html
