Sandakan, The City of Nature is the second-largest city in the state of Sabah, East Malaysia, on the north-eastern of island of Borneo. It is located on the east coast of the island and had a population of 347,334 as of the 2000 census. About 18% of the population is ethnic Chinese ( mostly Cantonese and Hakka ). The rest of the population are Bumiputeras ( Malay, Bajau, Dusun, etc ) and a large population of illegal immigrants ( mostly Filipino and Indonesian ). It is the administrative centre of Sandakan Division and was the former capital of British North Borneo. Sandakan is known as the gateway for ecotourism destinations in Sabah, such as the Sepilok Orang Utan Sanctuary, Turtle Islands Park, Kinabatangan River and Gomantong Caves.

- Selingan Island is the largest of three "Turtle Island's" situated of the East coast of and the only one visitors may spend the night on.

Sandakan Memorial Park, 11 km from city. Situated on the original site of the Japanese Prisoner of War camp is a memorial park to the men who lost their lives in the Borneo Death Marches during the Second World War. A small museum in the centre of the park provides a sombre look at the atrocities which occurred. Negotiate a taxi to take you there (15 min), and expect to pay around RM 30 including waiting time. Entry is free.

St Michael and All Angels Cathedral - erected in the late 19th century, it is one of the oldest stone buildings in Sabah.

This was literally a grab shot from the boat I was speeding past on. I really like the contrast beween the white house and colourful washing line. On the full size image, there is a lot of detail to pick out which I think is more interesting than the picture for a pictures sake!
