Warner Movie Palace, Endangered Proscenium
Made by mrarteest
Photo taken just before the performance of the Nutcracker. To the left you can see the Pipe Organ grille, although one was never installed since they designed the theater at the same time talkies were on their way out in the late 1920's. Warner Bros. decided that talkies would rule the world and live acting and pipe organs were officially cut out of the plans before construction of the theater finished. It has only recently fulfilled its purpose as a vaudeville house & theater. So that is ironic that the very thing they cut out of the original plans is the major reason the theater has survived. If it weren't for the new live performances, concerts and plays, this theater even with a new 50ft screen could not survive on movie tickets. The first feature-length movie originally presented as a talkie was Warners' The Jazz Singer, released in October 1927. Between 1927 and 1929 Warners' profits surged from $2 million to $14 million. When Hollywood discovered how profitable talkies became, the industry as a whole decided talkies are the wave of the future and abandoned the cinema/vaudeville concept in favor of full time Cinemas. When movie attendance had plummeted from the market crash of 29', the two stories of office/ retail space planned were converted into one-story retail spaces. Warner Bros. decided to abandon the Preforming Arts aspect from financial concerns so they never built the original design, they sealed up the orchestra pit and dressing rooms. They also cut out about 500 seats as well as the size of the building. No proper stage was built, though the blue prints called for it. The rigging for studio lights had already been installed but they were never used since there were no performances. When it was taken back by the city in the 90's thanks to loyal volunteers, the Grand Vision Foundation was able to attain the original blueprints and finish the original plans for a vaudeville house. Today you can watch goodies like Indian Jones, the Rocky Horror Picture Show and enjoy live performances, concerts and plays as was intended for this theater over 80 years ago! www.warnergrand.org/

'Cause I don't shine if you don't shine
Made by bhampton1963
Original shot on 35mm film with a Pentax K1000 in San Pedro, California. Model: Dawn Asamura On the corner of main street Just tryin' to keep it in line. You say you wanna move on and You say I'm falling behind. Can you read my mind? Can you read my mind? I never really gave up on Breakin' out of this two-star town. I got the green light, I got a little fight. I'm gonna turn this thing around. Can you read my mind? Can you read my mind? The good old days, the honest man; The restless heart, the Promised Land, A subtle kiss that no one sees; A broken wrist and a picture piece. Oh well I don't mind, if you don't mind. 'Cause I don't shine if you don't shine Before you go, can you read my mind? It’s funny how you just break down, Waitin' on some sign I pull up to the front of your driveway With magic soakin' my spine. Can you read my mind? Can you read my mind? The teenage queen, the loaded gun; The drop dead dream, the Chosen One, A southern drawl, a world unseen; A city wall and a trampoline. Oh well I don't mind, if you don't mind 'Cause I don't shine if you don't shine Before you jump, tell me what you find when you read my mind. Slippin’ in my faith until I fall. You never returned that call. Woman, open the door, don't let it sting I wanna breathe that fire again. She said I don't mind, if you don't mind 'Cause I don't shine if you don't shine. Put your back on me, Put your back on me, Put your back on me. The stars are blazing like rebel diamonds cut out of the sun. Can you read my mind? Can You Read My Mind? by the Killers

The Texture of Friendship
Made by hbmike2000
I took advantage of not feeling well today and learned how to add textures to a photo. I sat at the computer with a cat (why is it always the heavy one) in lap and pulled up Photoshop. As my spouse opened the door to go to work I heard, I downloaded some instructional books on Photoshop for you to read up on. I thought to myself oh cool! Like a typical guy lost and refusing directions, I never opened any of the instructional books. I went through the thousands of photos that I have taken that have never seen the light of day and pulled up some shots I thought would look good. On the first shot I used the fiber texture on Photoshop along with clouds. Four hours later I figured it out. Then I decided to try my own shot for a texture. I pulled up a shot of an old piece of wood and layered it in to The Texture of Friendship. Six hours later I Finally figured it out. I sure am glad I didn't waste 30 minutes of time pulling up those instructional books that would of probably told me how to do it in minutes. Girls, stop laughing, it's a guy thing. View on Black for the best texturing I have ever done. (Yes, I know it's the ONLY texturing I have ever done)

Goodbye, 2010! (Korean Friendship Bell during blue hour)
Made by Robin Black Photography
First, the sentiment, then the story. I can think of no better way to bid a very productive 2010 adieu than by thanking all of you for your friendship and encouragement over the past year. I met a few of you over the course of the year, and hope to meet even more of you in 2011 (hopefully for some shooting!). May you all have a happy and prosperous new year, with much love and great photography. :) Now--I went down to San Pedro today hoping for a killer sunset. It was certainly looking promising on the drive down with light cloud cover and just a light breeze; but as sunset neared, the sun dropped into a bank of clouds offshore and no real color materialized. Fortunately, blue hour conditions looked good, and just as I started to snap a few more pics, the parks department showed up with an ENORMOUS light rig to light up the bell for the ringing ceremony tonight (it's only rung 5 times a year, and new year's eve is one of those times). It spotlighted the bell beautifully while the sky held on with a great sapphire blue. Off to Lone Pine and Bishop tomorrow to start the new year off in my favorite locale. Enjoy your first weekend of the new year!

San Pedro Bridge (or 'I am not a terrorist')
Made by thefost
San Pedro Bridge. The police were not too thrilled with me taking this picture. First of all, this shot was taken near the Queen Mary harbor in San Pedro (socal) along the docks in an area where you arnt really supposed to go. I set up my tripod, shot a few test shots, then began shooting this shot that you see here. In the middle of this exposure a Segway riding police officer approached me and demanded immediately talk to him. I of course prioritized the shot waited for the exposure to end before going over and chatting. Basically, he asked about what I was doing and wanted to know if I was a terrorist. Pointing to my camera gear and tripod, I told him that I was just a photographer, not a terrorist. We chatted about me not being a terrorist, then showed him my wallet with ID, but he still didn't seem convinced. Finally I showed him this shot on my camera LCD, which I guess didn't look very terroristy, and he finally believed me. A few of his other Segway riding police buddies showed up, but they eventually let me go without charges =]

Angels Gate Pool 1
Made by Marshall Astor - Food Pornographer
Through the fence view of the graffiti covered Angels Gate pool. The Angels Gate pool has been out of service for over 20 years. Originally built as part of the military facilities, it was briefly used by the community after the Army gave the property to the City of Los Angeles. It was taken out of service due to the danger that the crumbling retaining walls that support the hillside might give way and that the weight of water in the pool would break the camel's back causing the pool to slide down the hill. Until recently the pool was surrounded by a series of small buildings that served as chagning rooms, showers and bathrooms for users. The buildings had started to fall down, and had become a welcome mat to transients and various unsavoury activities, so the Recreation and Parks department pulled them down. Until about a year ago, the pool was relatively free of graffiti, only recently has it become a popular spot.

Saberhawks
Made by Neil Armstrong2
I was lucky enough to get a private tour the USS Abraham Lincoln. This Nimitz Class Aircraft Carrier is literally a floating city. I was allowed to take my camera everywhere but the Admirals Quarters and the reactor rooms. As much as i loved the tour, I have to admit, it's not the best place for natural light photography. The entire ship is dark and gray. The dark cloud-cover didn't help either. All handheld brackets. I could have brought the tripod but it would have been a pain getting through the tight quarters and stairs that are practically straight up and down. So I did what I always do in these situations, PROCESS THE HELL OUT OF IT. Opinions Requested

Old Fireboats Never Die ...
Made by Konabish
... not as long as they have friends. . . . Photo by Fire Captain Bishop (Retired) . . . . The Ralph J. Scott, also known as Fireboat #2, is a 100-foot fireboat that was attached to the Los Angeles Fire Department serving the Port of Los Angeles. It was retired in 2003 after 78 years of service and replaced by the Warner L. Lawrence. On display near the Los Angeles Maritime Museum in San Pedro, she can pump 17,000 gallons of water per minute. Its namesake is a former Chief Engineer of the LAFD. When retired, she had to be removed from the water due to the condition of her rivets and the lack of skilled labor to hand rivet the hull.

Korean Friendship Bell
Made by hbmike2000
Donated to the people of Los Angeles in 1976 by the Republic of Korea, the Korean Bell of Friendship celebrates the bicentennial of the U.S. and honors veterans of the Korean War. The Bell cost $500,000 to construct and was patterned after the Bronze Bell of King Songdok built in 771 A.D. The Bell Pavillion was built by thirty Koreans flown to the location, cost $569,680 and took 10 months to complete. The Bell is rung four times a year, 4th of July, August 15 (Korean Independence Day), New Years Eve and every September to coincide with bell ringings around the country to celebrate Constitution week. 100 Words: #10 Celebrate View on Black to celebrate friendship

Brown Pelican
Made by Maureen Sullivan
This was taken during a break in last week's storm. We were on a fishing pier that extends pretty far out, into the waters of Los Angeles Harbor, looking for a White-winged Scoter. (Found it!) Large numbers of Brown Pelicans, resplendent in breeding plumage kept flying past. The birds would fly just above the surface of the water. Brown Pelicans only feed by diving, unlike White Pelicans who float and forage. This is a hand held shot using a 400mm telephoto plus a 1.4x teleconverter. _____________________________________________________________________ Member of the Activists for birds and wildlife

korean bell of friendship
Made by Doubletee
San Pedro, California, 2008 With Japan, Seoul, and Hong Kong on my mind more often lately as I plan an Asian trip for November, I paid a visit to the lovely Korean Bell of Friendship in the San Pedro neighborhood of Los Angeles. Presented to the U.S. by the Republic of Korea in 1976 in celebration of the American Bicentennial, it also honors American veterans of the Korean War and symbolizes friendship between the two nations. More about the bell here. A horizontal, antique color version .

Gravity
Made by segamatic
Another from last Saturday's sunset. This beach had a lot more people than the locations I shoot at in PV and Malibu, so it was a little tough trying to compose something without someone standing in the middle of my shot. I've been shooting at 35mm on this 24-105mm f/4L quite a bit recently. Initially I was kind of forced to this focal length due to vignetting from my filter holder. However, I found this is a much better focal length for this lens, with much less distortion and CA to worry about.
