Big Sam, a 67-foot-tall likeness of Texas hero Sam Houston, stands guard over I-45 near Huntsville and is visible to northbound traffic for over 6 miles. Constructed of concrete and steel mesh, the statue is claimed to be the world's tallest statue of an American Hero (a statement which leaves one to wonder how many statues of American heroes are found outside of America.)
