Holy Ghost
Made by LusoFox
Salzburg Cathedral Salzburg, Austria The dove represents the Holy Spirit or the Holy Ghost in Christianity. The Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus like a dove when he was baptized in the Jordan River: Luke 3:22 ... and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased. (NIV) The dove is also a symbol of peace. In Genesis 8 after the flood, a dove returned to Noah with an olive branch in its beak, revealing the end of God's judgment and the beginning of a new covenant with man. christianity.about.com/od/symbolspictures/ig/Christian-Sy... Salzburg, Austria Salzburg (Austro-Bavarian: Såizburg; literally: Salt City) is the fourth-largest city in Austria and the city of the federal state of Salzburg. Salzburg's Old Town (Altstadt) has internationally renowned baroque architecture and one of the best-preserved city centres north of the Alps. It was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. The city is noted for its Alpine setting. Salzburg was the birthplace of 18th-century composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. In the mid-20th century, the city was the setting for parts of the American musical and film The Sound of Music, which features famous landmarks in Austria. The musical was a partnership between Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. The capital city of the State of Salzburg (Land Salzburg), the city has three universities. It has a large student population who add liveliness and energy to the area, and the universities provide culture to the community. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salzburg 20101230_7D_IMG_3833_Salzburg

Dom, Cathedral, Salzburg, Austria
Made by Snuffy
The first Dom was recorded in 774 when the relics of St. Rupert were transferred from St. Peter’s Abbey to the Dom. The first Dom, using the foundations of St. Rupert, was built under the guidance of St. Virgil on a location where rituals and sacrifices from Celtic and Roman times took place. After the Dom was burned down in 842, it was re-built with the long choir with a crypt and the two west towers. The Dom was damaged by fire many times since then, and the last one took place in 1598. Prince Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau ordered the total demolition of the Dom, and the construction of a new cathedral started in 1611. The church was opened in 1628, and the towers were completed in 1652 and 1655. 4 statues in front of the front gates are St. Rupert holding a salt barrel, St. Virgil holding a church, St. Peter holding the keys, and St. Paul holding a sword. The three bronze doors represent the three divine virtues. The one on the left is Faith, the centre door is Love, and the one on the right is Hope.

Now the church is 466 feet long and 109 feet high at the crossing/dome. The baroque style can be seen in the choir and the nave. The Salzburg Cathedral was partially damaged during World War II when a single bomb crashed through the central dome over the crossing. Repairs were somewhat slow to take place, but restoration was complete by 1959.

The organ that is in use for services today was built in 1988, but the old organ of the Salzburger Dom is still essentially the same as the one built by the famous organ builder Josef Christoph Egedacher in 1703. Salzburg Cathedral has five separate organs, offering a unique listening experience north of the Alps. Together with the Great Cathedral organ“ in the Cathedral's west gallery, source of the ensemble's vital and superb musical sound, Salzburg Cathedral also has the potential for a colorful scenario unique in Europe.

17th century baroque cathedral and the site of Mozart's Baptism. This view is from the Hohensalzburg Castle. The Salzburg Cathedral was partially damaged during World War II when a single bomb crashed through the central dome over the crossing. Repairs were somewhat slow to take place, but restoration was complete by 1959. As you can see there is currently roof working being performed once again. I got a little creative with the editing. Thought the cross-hairs on the church was interesting.

This is the church where a part of Sound of Music movie was shot. The weather as usual, was beautiful in Salzburg. There was a parade when we reached there so had to take a shot while avoiding scores of people. Still some heads are vissible at the bottom. Flair is as shot and not photoshopped Salzburg is a beautiful city. Would love to visit again. The images is a 4 shot HDR with Lens correction. It is a bit dark but I like it that way

The foundation-stone of the existing, baroque cathedral was laid in 1614. In 1628 he was consecrated by archbishop Paris Lodron. About forty years later the towers and the surrounding places were completed. The baroque construction impresses by his clear forms, the uniform decoration and the luminous facade of home marble. Its architect, Santino Solari, came from Italy.

This - representing Hope - is one of the three bronze doors of the Salzburger Dom. It was created in 1958 (along with two others representing Love and Faith) to mark the third reconstruction of the Dom after it had been destroyed in World War II.
