Stift St. Peter in Salzburg
Made by 1982Chris911 (Thank you 100.000 Times)
St Peter's Archabbey, otherwise St Peter's Abbey (Stift Sankt Peter) in Salzburg is a Benedictine monastery in Austria. It is considered one of the oldest monasteries in the German-speaking area, if not in fact the oldest. St Peter's Abbey was founded in 696 by Saint Rupert at the site of a Late Antique church stemming from the first Christianization in the area in the days of Severinus of Noricum. Likewise the establishment of the monastery was meant to forward the missionary work in the Eastern Alps. Until 987 the office of the abbot was joined to that of the Archbishop of Salzburg: the two were always held together by one man. In the Middle Ages St Peter's was known for its exceptional writing school. In 1074 Archbishop Gebhard of Salzburg sent several monks to the newly established filial monastery of Admont in the March of Styria. In the 15th century the abbey adopted the Melk Reforms. In 1623 Archbishop Paris Graf von Lodron founded the Benedictine University of Salzburg, which until its dissolution in 1810 was closely connected to the abbey. Interior From 1641 the abbey was a member of the Salzburg Congregation, merged in 1930 into the present Austrian Congregation (of which it is the principal house) of the Benedictine Confederation. In 1926 the endeavours for the establishment of a Catholic university led to the foundation of the Benedictine college (Kolleg St. Benedikt), on which later the re-foundation of the University of Salzburg was based. In 1927 St Peter's was raised to the status of an Archabbey. During the Nazi period the monks were expelled, but the monastery was not dissolved and the monks returned after the war. Abbey church The present-day Romanesque building at the northern foot of the Mönchsberg was dedicated in 1147. One of the organs had been built on the rood screen in 1444 by Heinrich Traxdorf of Mainz. While the steeple received its onion dome in 1756, the interior, already re-modelled several times, was refurbished in the Rococo style between 1760 and 1782 under Abbot Beda Seeauer by Franz Xaver König, Lorenz Härmbler, Johann Högler, Benedikt Zöpf and others. The high altar is a work by Martin Johann Schmidt. The St Mary's Chapel contains the grave of Abbot Johann von Staupitz (d. 1524), a friend of Martin Luther. Mozart's Great Mass in C minor was premiered in the church, probably on 26 October 1783, with his wife Constanze singing first soprano. At the adjacent Petersfriedhof cemetery his sister is buried, Maria Anna Mozart (Nannerl), and Johann Michael Haydn.

Schloss Leopoldskron
Made by LusoFox
Salzburg, Austria Schloss Leopoldskron is a rococo palace and a national historic monument in Leopoldskron-Moos, a southern district of the city of Salzburg, Austria. The palace is located on the lake Leopoldskroner Weiher. Leopoldskron-Moos, an affluent residential area, reaches to the foot of the 1853m high Untersberg and features a number of still working farms as well as a peat-bog. The palace has been home to the Salzburg Global Seminar since 1947. In 1965 the film The Sound of Music, directed by Robert Wise and starring Julie Andrews, was produced in Salzburg with the grounds adjacent to those of Schloss Leopoldskron as one of the main locations. The palace was never used as the back of the Von Trapp villa, although even some tours of Salzburg claim that it is. Scenes filmed on the adjacent property (known as Bertelsmann, at the time), include the family drinking pink lemonade (not too sweet, not too sour, just too... pink!) on the terrace, Maria and the Captain arguing on the terrace, and the children falling off the boat in the lake. Only shots showing the lake, were filmed there, using a replica of Leopoldskron's terrace, and horse-gates, leading to the lake. Any shots showing the building itself, were filmed at Schloss Frohnburg. The ballroom for the interior shootings, which were done in a studio, is a copy of the Venetian room from the palace. The setting for the two main love scenes, one between Liesl and Rolf (featuring the song Sixteen Going on Seventeen) and the other between Maria and the Captain (Something Good) was the glass gazebo originally situated in the garden of the palace. The gazebo interiors were shot on a Hollywood sound stage, only long shots of the Austrian gazebo are seen in the film. The gazebo was later moved to the other side of the lake to allow tourists to visit it, but after their numbers became too big it was again relocated to the Hellbrunn Palace outside of the city. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leopoldskron 20101229_7D_IMG_3770_Salzburg

Franziskanerkirche
Made by LusoFox
St. Francis Church Salzburg, Austria The Franziskanerkirche is located at the end of Sigmund-Haffner-Gasse, corner Franzikanergasse and connected to the Residenz Castle. The origin of the current church is unclear, but probably lies in the time of St. Virgil, who might have used the church for baptisms. There is record of a parish church on the site from 1139, but this building was destroyed in a fire in 1167. The main nave of the current Franziskanerkirche was built in late-Romanesque style in the early 13th century and therefore, it is among the oldest buildings in Salzburg. The main gate facing Siegmund-Haffner-Gasse was decorated in Baroque style around 1700. On the right side of the gate you can see a stone-carved hand that is held in a position like swearing an ore - there are two stories connected to this hand. The one tells us that the mason responsible for the gate had to swear to build no other gate like this in his life; the other story relates the hand to the fact that refugees and persecuted people could find shelter and protection within the church. The interiors are mostly Gothic, with the main altar designed by Salzburg′s most famous sacral artist Fischer von Erlach. In the early 17th century, the arches of the choirs were filled with side chapels, giving elaborate examples for Baroque style that was imposed on previous Gothic structures. Despite of being built around the same time, the chapels display very individual decorations. www.visit-salzburg.net/sights/franziskanerkirche.htm 20101230_7D_IMG_3857_Salzburg

Holy Ghost
Made by LusoFox
Salzburg Cathedral Salzburg, Austria The dove represents the Holy Spirit or the Holy Ghost in Christianity. The Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus like a dove when he was baptized in the Jordan River: Luke 3:22 ... and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased. (NIV) The dove is also a symbol of peace. In Genesis 8 after the flood, a dove returned to Noah with an olive branch in its beak, revealing the end of God's judgment and the beginning of a new covenant with man. christianity.about.com/od/symbolspictures/ig/Christian-Sy... Highest Position in Explore # 6 on 30th Mar'09 Hohensalzburg Castle (Festung Hohensalzburg) is a castle in the Austrian city of Salzburg. It sits on Festungsberg hill. With a length of 250 meters and a width of 150 meters, it is one of the largest medieval castles in Europe. This is again from my archives a single RAW file tonemapped and digitally blended using Photoshop. Trivia During the early 20th century it was used as a prison, holding Italian prisoners of war during World War I and Nazi activists (before the Anschluss with Germany) in the 1930s. It was refurbished in the 20th century and became a major tourist attraction, with a cable car, built in 1900, leading up from the town to the Hasengrabenbastei. It stands today as one of the best preserved castles in Europe. Source: Wikipedia

salzach, österrich
Made by andrew gulik
15/52 The Salzach is a river in Austria and Germany. It is a right tributary of the Inn and is 225 kilometres (140 mi) in length. The river's name is derived from the German word Salz, meaning salt. Until the 19th century shipping of salt down the river was an important part of the local economy. The shipping ended when railways replaced the old transport system. It is the main river of the Austrian state of Salzburg. The source is located in the Kitzbühel Alps near Krimml, Salzburg. From here it runs eastwards until Schwarzach im Pongau, then turns northwards and passes the cities of Hallein and Salzburg. Then it forms the border between Bavaria, Germany and Austria for almost 70 kilometres (43 mi). Cities on the banks in this last section include Laufen, Tittmoning and Burghausen. All these towns have border crossings. The river finally joins the Inn near Braunau. @wikipedia

Water of life for a town - the Almkanal
Made by rotraud_71
Please see large! The Almkanal is a technical master achievment of the the high mediaeval times. Its beginnings come from the 12.century Its water comes from the Königssee with Berchtesgaden. The channel is derived from the Königsseer Ache at the foot of the Untersberg and led 4 km up to the city Salzburg. In the city the water is distributed in numerous branchings, also by means of a tunnel by the Möchsberg, and manifold used. In former times, numerous mills and technical industries were operated, in addition waste water from trade and households was introduced. Today 14 electrical power stations still are in use, one of it secures the emergency power supply of the city center, among other things, for the houses of the Salzburger Festspiele In the entire townscape one discovers again and again the Almkanal, its fresh mountain water lends many fountains and public plants lives.

Looking up the alley that leads up to the Kapuzinerberg in Salzburg. It is a good steep walk up to the top. On a hot day it was nice to enjoy the cool stone shadows for awhile. My posting has been intermittent in the last month. This is because I have been working through another change in scenery. My family and I are moving to Guildford, UK on the 30th! My job situation was not ideal here in Munich after my employer was purchased and I found a great opportunity in England. I'm sad for what and whom we'll leave behind, but looking forward to the new adventure. I am sorry not to have caught up with some of you in person here in Munich, but maybe I'll meet some of you in the UK!

Taken with a disposable holiday Kodac Camera. Scanned in, cropped, edited and saturated in PhotoPlus X4, and then uploaded from mobile device. Salzburg is on the banks of the Salzach River, at the northern boundary of the Alps. The mountains to Salzburg's south contrast with the rolling plains to the north. The closest alpine peak—the 1972 m Untersberg—is only a few kilometers from the city centre. The Altstadt, or old town, is dominated by its baroque towers and churches and the massive Festung Hohensalzburg. This area is surrounded by two smaller mountains, the Mönchsberg and Kapuzinerberg, which act as the green lungs of the city. Salzburg is approximately 150 km east of Munich, 281 km northwest of Ljubljana, and 300 km west of Vienna.

Salzburg, Austria Getreidegasse (also known as Grain Lane) is a busy shopping street in the Old-Town section of Salzburg. The house at no. 9 Getreidegasse is the place where Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born and where he lived until the age of 17. Originally called Trabegasse (derived from traben to trot), its name was changed several times before it became the Grain Lane. Every day, one can see the famous 'puppet woman' with her brown basket on this street. She is a lady named Maria and has been selling puppets there since 1987. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Getreidegasse 20101230_7D_IMG_3808_Salzburg

a tilt ... a shift
Made by j image
I've always been a fan of good tilt-shift photos, this not necessarily being one of them. But the way they display a setting as a miniature is fun and so cool when done right. The name tilt-shift always intrigued me, as well. And it seems to be more of an expression of life at times than just a method of treating a photograph. There has been so much imbalance in my job and life lately, nothing seems to be level. The playing field is always on the tilt, and I'm always forced to shift in an attempt to re-balance. Life tilts ... I shift. The sun rises the next morning.
