Ventilation

This room was one of the first at the Salmon Ruins to be excavated. Originally this was a square room, but during the secondary occupation it was made into a kiva. Many were found in this small room. At the south (left) end of the room is a ventilation shaft. There was no speculation by the archaeologists as to what the purpose of this room may have been for, but it seems it might be for food processing, namely of corn. Just north (to the right) of this room was another room which contained a pit of thousands of corn cobs. By comparison to other cultures in the area, it seems that Chocoan corn was notably larger, more uniform, and had more rows of kernels per ear. It seems that during their height around the 11th and 12th century, the Chocoans had either a greater understanding of agriculture than its neighboring cultures, or it had a monopoly on the strain of corn. I suppose it could also be both. This is Room 5.

Kiva
Made by Travis S.
If you look at the detail in the construction here, it can be noticed that this was once a square room that was turned into a round room, or Kiva. This is said to be a typical maneuver of the Northern San Juan construction and is thought to post-date Chacoan influence dating to about AD 1150. Along with being turned into a kiva from being a square room, this area was a burial site. On the floor were found six , a tchamajilla (cha-ma-hee-ah) which is a ceremonial hoe, as well as pots and textile fragments. Even a gruel made of corn flour and an extinct species of tumbleweed was found at the southern (close) end of the floor. This is Room 127.

Kiva

This is another square room that was turned into a round kiva. Access to this kiva would have been through the roof through a hole which also functioned to release smoke from the fires that would have been maintained inside. This kiva is called the Dotted Kiva because of the white dots that were white dots painted around the northwest corner. This room seems to have been intentionally removed of all materials, with only a remaining. The roof was then eventually burned with only pieces of the roof and adobe covering the room before it was excavated. This is Room 124.
