SALFORD LADS CLUB
Made by Neil101
One of my favorite buildings in Salford, Greater Manchester. This building has always had a place in my heart, my great grandfather was born in a house just behind the club, and of course one of my favorite bands The Smiths were photographed outside it and helped the club become the icon it is today. Wikipedia on SLC It was opened on January 30, 1904, by General Baden-Powell, later the founder of the scout movement. Among former members are actor Albert Finney and Alan Clarke, the lead singer of 60s pop group The Hollies. The club gained fame in 1986 when the pop band The Smiths posed in front of it for the inside cover of their album The Queen Is Dead (the photograph was taken by pop photographer Stephen Wright). The club is on the corner of St Ignatius Way and Coronation Street in Salford and is a place of pilgrimage for many Smiths fans. The club is gradually (as of February 2007) falling into disrepair however, and is seeking £1m funding for repairs. In January 2007, the M.E.N. reported that the club was third in a nationwide hunt to find the most iconic buildings in the country. Activities such as boxing, football and computer skills are taught in the club - Membership has fallen to 90 compared to 2,000 in its heyday. The club gained listed status in 2003, and its tiled interior is virtually unchanged, with original fittings including a boxing ring, snooker rooms, and a gym with a viewing balcony. A report by English Heritage said: The building is thought to be the most complete example of this rare form of social provision to survive in England

Salford landscape 1961

The end of an era. The diggers in the middle of the photo were probably working on the River Irwell, which crosses the scene from left to right, between the David Lewis Recreation Ground and the houses on what is now called 'Spike Island', though in my time Spike Island was the cinder covered football croft on Frederick Road, just over the river on the left. Parts of the film version of 'Hobson's Choice' (1954), with John Mills, were filmed on the banks of the River Irwell in this area. It was said that they needed to add soap powder, or similar, to the River because it didn't look dirty enough! From my colourslides.

Panorama - Lower Broughton, Salford 2005
Made by joseph_mcgarraghy
This is the juction of Lower Broughton Road and Camp Street, on the right, from the corner of Lower Broughton Road and Frederick Road. The fencing on the left is where St. Boniface's School playground was. The road ahead leads to The Cliff and the building in the centre is the Prince of Wales pub. Looking up Camp Street you can just see The Carlton pub and the letterbox. This is stitched together from three photos using Serif PanoramaPlus 3.
