Nesting White Pigeon

This pigeon was under a bridge near where I live. The sun was VERY bright outside, and I spot-metered off the bird's chest. Despite this, some detail seems to have been lost in the body, though I still really like the shot. This is basically SOOC with a slight crop and white balance corrected. In the nest were a few babies, which may have been dead (or so recently hatched that they weren't moving or making noise). You can see part of one of the chicks if you view this original size. Given the somewhat difficult exposure conditions I'm proud to have come away with this image, which I feel is nicely composed and very representative of what the scene looked like.

The Common Whitetail or Long-tailed Skimmer (Libellula lydia) is a common dragonfly across much of North America, with a striking and unusual appearance. The male's chunky white body (about 5 cm long), combined with the brownish-black bands on its otherwise translucent wings, give it a checkered look. Females have a brown body and a different pattern of wing spots, closely resembling that of female Libellula pulchella, the Twelve-spotted Skimmer. Whitetail females can be distinguished by their smaller size, shorter bodies, and white zigzag abdominal stripes; L. puchella's abdominal stripes are straight and yellow. Rosemère, Quebec.

I painted this watercolor in the Secret Gardens event in july. I was invited to paint on location in a private garden in Rosemere, ( north of Montreal) Twelve gardens was selected and twelve artists had the pleasure to paint in those garden. The visitors were invited to admire gardens and paintings. Next week, will take place the exhibition of the paintings which were painted during that event, at the Municipal library of Rosemère.
