St. Stephen's Cathedral #2

St. Stephen's Cathedral #2
Made by Fraggle Red
Vienna, Austria Shot hand-held with: Focal Length: 17 mm, f-Number: f/4, Exposure Time: 1/13 sec., ISO Speed: ISO: 1600, denoised with Noiseware CE and processed in Photoshop (corrected the perspective and applied LucisArt's Whyeth filter). The shot could have been a bit less blury, if I would have remembered to switch on IS. I had the IS switched off because of some prior long-exposure shots taken with a tripod. Despite everyone saying you don't have to switch IS off when you have the camera on a tripod I find that long exposures taken with the IS on are always blury. If I switch it off they aren't. These photos bring back memories from times long past. I was 14 when I visited Vienna and St. Stephen’s Cathedral for the first time. It was a field trip with school, one week in Vienna (great). I just got my first camera for Christmas and was excited to put it to the test (I guess). I was mesmerized by the glass window above the organ and wanted to take a photo of it… with this camera (erm). My teacher told me it won’t work; the window is too far away for the flash to do anything. I didn’t believe him (did you ever believe your teachers?) and had to try it, with flash and everything. Needless to say the teacher was right and it really didn’t work. Now 20 years and 8 or 9 cameras later I got my second chance…

Colorful tiled roof of Stephansdom I

Colorful tiled roof of Stephansdom I
Made by lhongchou
A glory of St. Stephen's Cathedral is its ornately patterned, richly coloured roof, 111 meters long, and covered by 230,000 glazed tiles. Above the choir on the south side of the building the tiles form a mosaic of the double-headed eagle that is symbolic of the empire ruled from Vienna by the Habsburg dynasty. On the north side the coats of arms of the City of Vienna and of the Republic of Austria are depicted. In 1945, fire caused by World War II damage to nearby buildings leapt to the north tower of the cathedral and went on to destroy the wooden framework of the roof. Replicating the original bracing for so large a roof would have required an entire square kilometre of forest, so over 600 metric tons of steel bracing were used instead. The roof is so steep that it is sufficiently cleaned by the rain alone and is seldom covered by snow. from St. Stephen's Cathedral, Vienna - Wikipedia

St. Stephan's Cathedral

This is a shot of the interior of the cathedral...I always love to see the effect of sun-rays through the big colored windows. I enhanced the effect with a soft touch in lightroom. St. Stephan's Cathedral (German: Stephansdom) is the mother church of the Archdiocese of Vienna and the seat of the Archbishop of Vienna, Christoph Cardinal Schönborn, OP. Its current Romanesque and Gothic form seen today, situated at the heart of Vienna, Austria in the Stephansplatz, was largely initiated by Rudolf IV and stands on the ruins of two earlier churches, the first being a parish church consecrated in 1147. As the most important religious building in Austria's capital, the cathedral has born witness to many important events in that nation's history and has, with its multi-colored tile roof, become one of the city's most recognizable symbols.

St. Stephen's Cathedral (Vienna) at night

This is St. Stephen's Cathedral (Stephansdom) in Vienna / Austria. Taking photos at night with a tripod attracts people. While I was preparing my tripod to make this shot a tramp came to me and asked me if I thought that this will be a good photo. She looked at my camera and said: What camera do you have? Ah, a Nikon! She told me that yesterday the weather was much better for taking photos and then went away. I made a series of shots from this position. I used the autotimer and was lucky to catch this car. I also like the light from the street lamp on the right side of the picture. Wikipedia See where this picture was taken.

During our walk through Vienna I saw a girl sitting in front of St. Stephen's Cathedral reading a book (in the middle of hundrets of tourists) in the evening light. And I thought with the windows, the light and shadow it would make an interesting composition. I made several shots and these two are my favorites. What do you think about it? Was haltet ihr davon?

Kanzel.

Weeping Black Madonna of Máriapócs (in Stefansdom, Vienna)

Weeping Black Madonna of Máriapócs (in Stefansdom, Vienna)

This was a weeping icon back in Máriapócs, Hungary, but it was taken away and stopped weeping, yet many miracles continued to happen. The weeping started on the 4th of November, 1696 (some say 4th of December), and wept 7 times in that month. It was taken to Vienna by Leopold II, Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary. A plea was sent to Leopold II to return the painting, but he promised only a reproduction of the original. This reproduction wept several more times in Máriapócs, but never did the original again. www.sspx.ca/Angelus/1988_January/Mother_Tears.htm

The famous St. Stephen’s Cathredral was built in the 12th century, is located in the city centre of Vienna and one of the city's most recognizable symbols. Standing at 136 meters tall (445 ft) St. Stephen's Cathedral's massive south tower is its highest point and a dominant feature of the Vienna skyline. There are 18 altars in the main part of the church, and more in the various chapels. You can also find tombs, catacombs and crypts in (and under) the church which you can also visit.

Human remains in the catacombs under the Dome. Victims of the plague. When the charnel house and eight cemeteries against St. Stephen's Cathedral's side and back walls were closed due to an outbreak of bubonic plague in 1735, the bones within them were moved to the catacombs below the church. Burials directly in the catacombs occurred until 1783, when a new law forbade most burials within the city. The remains of over 11,000 persons are in the catacombs (which may be toured).

St. Stephens Cathedral

This is St. Stephen's Cathedral which sits in the heart of the Old City in Vienna. It's very difficult to take photos of any building here, as the streets are very narrow. This accounts for the shadows, as I took this pretty early in the morning before the throngs of tourists descended. This is also the back end, as they are renovating the exterior. The cathedral is very large, so this is actually a composite of a few shots.

St. Stephen's Cathedral (Stephansdom) in Stephansplatz. It's right smack in the middle of Vienna's shopping haven much like The Duomo in Milan, Italy. The building is a patchwork of architectural styles, but predominantly Gothic. Interestingly, none of the original construction still remains. This is taken using a Canon 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM lens at 16mm and barrel distortion is corrected using CS3.

Day 327/365: Stephansdom

The exterior of the Stephansdom was under construction, so a visit inside was a must. There was a sign stating that visitors can only stay in the back, behind the gate, but the church was opened to people who wanted to pray. Somehow, someone got the idea that he or she could go in, and then everyone followed. Until we were all ushered out by a couple of guys who worked there.

Stephansdom Cathedral in Vienna, Austria. Incredible gothic and romanesque structure. Unfortunately there was cleaning work being carried out so you'll have to excuse the odd choice of angle but having half of the structure covered up tends to ruin decent photos unfortunately!

Stephansdom Vienna. This is an HDR 3 exposure image. Ev -1,0,+1. photomatixed. there was a lot of perspective fiddling to get the verticals correct, even with my wide angle lens, verticals were still an issue. Best viewed full size to appreciate the detail...........
