Crucifixion ...

Crucifixion ...

From inside Sint Salvator's Cathedral, Brugge. Brugge Bruges, known as the Venice of the North, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The city center is one of the best preserved medieval cities in Europe. The capital of the Belgian province of West Flanders, Bruges (or Brugge in Flemish) is the historical core of Flanders, where the first Count of Flanders built his fortress. With its access to the sea via the series of canals running through the city, Bruges built itself as an important international trading center and the market for Flemish cloth and lace, as well as an international financial center (Medici and Osterling Banks, and others) and the warehousing center for the Hansa or Hanseatic League (a medieval trading monopoly of cities and guilds, 13th-17th century). Sint Salvator To the southwest, Cathedral Sint Salvator. Originally built in the 9th century, it was a parish church in Bruges (the cathedral was Sint Donatius Church, which was destroyed by the French during the Revolution). The oldest surviving part of the cathedral is the base of the tower (11th C.), much of the rest was built over the later centuries. The upper part of the tower was built after the fire of 1839, when William Chantrell (English architect) restored the cathedral. Cathedral Sint Salvator contains many works of art from the destroyed Sint Donatius cathedral, including tapestries manufactured locally in 1730 and the original paintings they were made from (an unusual combination), and the weapons of the Knights of the Golden Fleece. The Order of the Golden Fleece is an Order of Chivalry similar to the English Order of the Garter. It was founded in 1430 by Philip III, Duke of Burgundy when he was elected to the Order of the Garter but had to decline to avoid offending the King of France. The weapons on display in Sint Salvator are those of the original 24 Knights elected at the meeting that founded the Order of the Golden Fleece. f/2.8 | 1/40sec | ISO 640 | handheld

St.-Salvator-Kathedrale, Brügge, Belgien

St.-Salvator-Kathedrale, Brügge, Belgien

Saint Saviour's Cathedral, Bruges, Belgium St. Saviour's was established as a parish around 850. Of the first small church on this site nothing is left. The today church and the lower part of the spire date from the 12th century. The main parts of the church are built in so-called Gothic of the Schelde (a Flemish river name) style of the 14th century. The ambulatory and the radiating chapels are remains of the less vertical Gothic of the 15th century. In 1834, when the diocese of Brugge is re-erected, this parish and collegiate church becomes cathedral, because the old St Donatian's Cathedral at the Burg Place is by then demolished by the French revolutionaty govemment. After a disastrous fire in 1839 the cathedral underwent extensive restoration and the tower made higher according to the new status as Cathedral so as not to be overshadowed by the neighbouring Church of Our Lady.

Window of , Bruges, Belgium Large view Whereas the church itself dates back to the 12th century, the neo-gothic stain glassed windows are from the 19th century. The main scene shows the announcement of the Saviour's birth to Mary. Afterwards Mary said in her magnificat: My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me--holy is his name. His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation. Lukas 1,46-50

Notre Dame Window

Notre Dame Window
Made by Dune_UK
Notre Dame window in Brugges. Unfortunately it seems that Brugges has a construction competition on at the moment. Everything seems to be covered or scaffolded. It took two centuries (13th-15th) to build the church. Among the many art treasures of the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk is a beautiful Carrara marble Madonna and Child sculpture by Michelangelo. This statue, made in 1504, was the only one of Michelangelo's works to leave Italy in his lifetime and is today one of the few that can be seen outside Italy. It was bought by a Bruges merchant, Jan van Mouskroen, and donated to the church in 1506. The church also contains a painting of the Crucifixion of Christ by Anthony van Dyck and a rococo extravaganza of a pulpit, designed by Bruges artist Jan Antoon Garemijn. Also impressive are the side-by-side bronze tomb sculptures of the Duke of Burgundy, Charles the Bold, who died in 1477, and his daughter, Mary of Burgundy, who died at age 25 after falling from her horse in 1482. A windowpane under the tombs allows you to view the 13th- and 14th-century graves of priests.

In Belgium (as well as in Italy, maybe a bit more), 90% of things you can visit in a town (mostly without buying a ticket) are churches. Someone quarreled about the existence of the Christian roots in Europe... I think that, at least from a turistic point of view, there are huge Christian RESOURCES!!

Foto: Willy Vereenooghe

Sint-Salvatorskathedraal

Sint-Salvatorskathedraal

Sint-Salvator became a cathedral fairly recently (1834). This new status prompted the hiring of architect William Chantrell in 1839, with instructions to restore the cathedral and to add to the tower, such that it would be higher than the nearby Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk. Chantrell chose a Romanesque design that did not reach the desired height. The Historic Center of Brugge is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Thank you to for the following deconstruction of this window. On 8 December 1870, St Joseph was proclaimed Patron of the Universal Church by Pope Piux IX and this glass commemorates that. St Joseph appears in the cloud amidst the angels and the pope is pointing at him with the members of the Church looking on. The arms of Pope Piux X are seen on the bottom of the window, which suggests that it was installed in his pontificate (1903-1914).

St Salvator: Church Spire

St Salvator: Church Spire
Made by eclecticimaging
The chuch spire of St Salvator, Bruges, Belgium. This spire has been extended several times, because Salvator was just a parish church before it became a cathedral; after the demolition of St Donatius by French occupants at the end of the 18th century, Salvator was chosen to become its successor. This resulted in a major overhaul, and I especially liked the many 19th century stained glass windows.

We were in Bruges at the weekend with friends. Lunch on the last day involved the obligatory Belgian waffle - my partner's I hasten to add - not mine. This picture of it wouldn't normally feature here but when I got back I found that the Nottingham UK Group's Theme Of The Week is food so this is my contribution.

This sculpture is one of a group of four sculptures in 't Zand plaza near the Concertgebouw in Bruges. It was designed by local artists Stefaan Depuydt and Livia Canestraro and represents the new Bruges as a tourism destination (many visitors rent bikes to get around).
