Saint Paul is the capital and the second most populous city of the state of Minnesota in the Midwestern portion of the United States and is the county seat of Ramsey County. As of the 2000 census, the city population was 287,151, although that number had decreased to 276,963 in the 2004 Census estimates. In 2000 the U.S. Census Bureau considered referring to the Minneapolis/St. Paul metropolitan area as simply Minneapolis, which brought an outcry from many St. Paul residents as well as then Mayor Norm Coleman. The 2000 census' list of metropolitan populations did indeed continue to include St. Paul in its name for the area. The city is now perhaps best known for its favorite sons, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Charles M. Schulz, but in 1820, it was an extreme outpost in the wild west, where Indians, European explorers and American soldiers (from neighboring Fort Snelling, just upstream on the Mississippi River) lived in close proximity. Saint Paul and the adjacent city of Minneapolis form the core of the Twin Cities metropolitan area. Of the two Twin Cities, St. Paul might be described as a somewhat bookish brother to Minneapolis in that it is festooned with small liberal arts colleges, tightly adherent to tradition, and fastidious in its street level presentation, and less interested in the high-rise, glass sheathed architecture meant to be appreciated by "angels and aviators."

minnesota fort snelling cannon shot

minnesota fort snelling cannon shot Blasting the cannon at Historic Fort Snelling in St. Paul, Minnesota - kaboom'ski !! More than you probably want to know: Fort Snelling is a fully restored military fort on the bluffs overlooking the intersection of the Mississippi and Minnesota rivers in Saint Paul, MN. It's operated by the Minnesota Historical Society as a living museum with people in period costumes interpreting what life was like back in the day. Fort Snelling was completed in 1825 and was the northern most outpost of the USA. It protected fur trading routes and was the first official building in the territory that became Minnesota in 1858. This place is chuck-full of history and is kind of the 'birth place' of Minnesota housing the first school, first hospital, fist post office, etc - way too many things to fully list, but here's a couple I thought were interesting: * Zachary Taylor, who became our 12th President in 1849, was commander of Fort Snelling for two years starting in 1828. He later wrote in his diary that the region was a most miserable & uninteresting country (what a wussy). * Dred Scott was a slave owned by a doctor at Fort Snelling. Dred was able to save up money but was not allowed to purchase his own freedom. A group of abolitionist legal advisers took his case to the US Supreme Court that ruled in 1857 that slaves are property and have no human rights - that appalling ruling strengthened slavery opposition and helped usher in the American Civil War. * In May of 1876, General George A. Custer used Fort Snelling as the planning and kickoff point for his ill-fated expedition against the Sioux (Lakota) that ended in his massive 'Last Stand' defeat on the Little Big Horn river some 800 miles to the West in Montana. Along with all this cool American expansionist history you also learn that the native peoples like Dakota and Ojibwe, who's way of life had changed very little for over 2,000 years, sadly gets all but erased in one generation after the building of this Fort. Historic Fort Snelling www.historicfortsnelling.org - cannon blasts off at 1:00 & 4:00pm.

Robert Street Bridge, St. Paul, Minnesota

Robert Street Bridge, St. Paul, Minnesota
Made by Thad Roan - Bridgepix
Bridgepixing the Twin Cities on the Mississippi River, the Robert Street Bridge, built 1924-1926, St. Paul, Minnesota. This concrete Arch Bridge is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Additional Bridge Photos and a Bridge Blog at www.Bridgepix.com. The Robert Street Bridge is a reinforced concrete multiple-arch bridge that spans the Mississippi River in downtown St. Paul, Minnesota. The bridge is notable for its complex design that was required to accommodate river traffic, the St. Paul Union Pacific Vertical-lift Rail Bridge crossing underneath it at an angle, and roadways on the downtown side of St. Paul. The bridge is also notable for a monumental reinforced concrete rainbow arch. The rainbow arch not only provides 62 feet of headroom above the river, but also provides a strong aesthetical focus. It was built in 1924-1926 by Fegles Construction Company, Ltd. and designed by Toltz, King & Day, Inc. The bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. The bridge was commissioned in the early 1920s to replace a wrought-iron span, originally built in 1884-1885, that had become obsolete due to increasing traffic. The engineers who designed the bridge had several obstacles to work around. The tracks of the Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis and Omaha Railway, St. Paul Union Depot, and the Chicago Great Western Railway mainline were factors. The engineers also had to provide adequate clearance above the river, as defined by the United States War Department at the time. Finally, the bridge had to clear Second Street in downtown St. Paul and work through a busy manufacturing district at the south end. The location of nearly every pier was dictated by these requirements. As a result, the bridge was designed with a combination of barrel-arch and rib-arch flanking spans and a rainbow arch for the central span. (Wikipedia)

Keeping an eye on me
Made by ladyloneranger
His name is Jangle and he lives at the Como Park Zoo in St. Paul, Minnesota. From Wikipedia: orangutan (ōrăng'ʊtăn) , an ape, Pongo pygmaeus, found in swampy coastal forests of Borneo and Sumatra. Highly specialized for arboreal life, it usually travels by grasping branches with hands and feet and moving from tree to tree. Adult males are about 41/2 ft (1.4 m) tall and weigh up to 180 lbs (82 kg). Their arms are very long, the total span sometimes exceeding 7 ft (2.1 m). Their legs are short and bowed, making ground travel awkward; they walk with a side-to-side shuffle on all fours. The body is rotund and covered with long hair in various shades of red. The face of a young orangutan looks quite human; the name means “forest person” in Malay. Old males usually develop large cheek pads and facial hair that resembles a man's moustache and beard. Enormous throat pouches also develop with sexual maturation, which starts at about age 14. Adult orangutans are basically solitary, except for mother-offspring pairs; however, weaned juveniles sometimes congregate in small groups. Males are aggressive toward each other and fight over females. Individual nests are usually constructed in trees each night. Fruit is a diet mainstay, and orangutans are important seed distributors. The numbers of orangutans have recently dropped precipitously owing to loss of habitat to deforestation (logging, forest fires, and clearing of land for plantations) and the killing of females for their young, to be sold as pets or zoo animals. Fewer than 30,000 individuals are believed to remain in the wild, and the species is listed as endangered. Orangutans are classified in the phylum Chordata, subphylum Vertebrata, class Mammalia, order Primates, family Pongidae.

10/10/10 @ 10 PM - Mark Mallman's 78-hour song is complete.
Made by fivesixzero :: Erik Hess
Twin Cities rock musician Mark Mallman took a shot break from over a decade of touring the country to train for, write 400+ pages of lyrics and chords for and perform a 78-hour song at the Turf Club in St. Paul with over 100 Minneapolis musicians backing him up in an ever-rotating band. Yep, you read that right. 78 hours. Over 100 musicians. The 78 hour mark was hit at exactly 10:00 on 10/10/10. I'm amazed that he was able to conserve so much energy for the explosive finale after spending over three days performing. The final 20 minutes was legendary. All 500 pages of his lyrics and chord progressions were torn out of his binder and thrown to the audience. The binder itself was obliterated, the metal rings were used as an vambrace of sorts. He nearly collapsed several times. His father (a marathon runner himself) came on stage and presented him with a medal crafted from his own marathon medals as a token of his pride for his son. Then he was whisked away by his team, hopefully to sleep. I was there to document about 50 hours worth and shared my photos with the City Pages as part of a 4-day live blog of the event. See the 4th, and most expolsive, day's coverage here: blogs.citypages.com/gimmenoise/2010/10/mark_mallman_ma_2.php NOTE: This photo is under exclusive license to City Pages/Village Voice Media until 11/10/2010.

When people say others shouldn't have regrets, I think that's a nice thought, but not altogether realistic. There are bound to be some regrets out there in the world and someone has to have them in order for the word to exist. I have one; I can live with that, I have to. But I'll be damned if I'm going to have another one. A tide has turned and I have made a decision about the direction of my life. No major announcement to be made right now but let's just say that I hope to soon be checking something off of my Bucket List - something I've had on that list since I was a little girl. .......................................................... Cathedral Dome in a Spotlight

Cathedral Dome in a Spotlight
Made by St Paul Paul
The dome of the Cathedral of Saint Paul here in Saint Paul, Minnesota. This was taken back in June of 2007 when the building was lit up to celebrate it's 100th birthday. Here in America this is Thanksgiving Day, which is a day when we celebrate the end of the harvest and give thanks for the good things life has brought us in the past year. For many people it's their favorite holiday - I know it's mine - because it's got nothing to do with presents and everything to do with love, family and friendship. On Thanksgiving you don't panic about the latest toy for Timmy; you sit with loved ones and have a good meal and talk and laugh and drink a little too much, sing a few songs perhaps, and, in quieter moments, reflect that life is by and large pretty good. What could be a more congenial way to say farewell to summer, and turn your face to the snowy winter ahead? In that spirit, then, I wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving. I personally am thankful for many things this year, among them my wonderful Flickr friends - some old, some quite new. I hope this Thanksgiving all of you have a happy and safe and wonderful time. My best wishes to everyone.

View of the 2010 Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon finish line seen from the steps of the Minnesota State Capitol building looking down John Ireland Boulevard up to the Cathedral of Saint Paul on the hill. More than you probably want to know: The 26.2 mile Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon has been held each year in early October since 1982. The MTCM is called “The Most Beautiful Urban Marathon in America. The race starts in downtown Minneapolis close to the Metrodome, travels South through some very scenic city lakes (Lake of the Isles, Lake Calhoun, Lake Harriet, Lake Nokomis), then goes along the Mississippi River bluffs before crossing into Saint Paul, up historic Summit Avenue to the Cathedral of St. Paul and then down a little hill to the Finnish line on the grounds of the Minnesota State Capitol. This year over 5,000 volunteers and 250,000 spectators cheered along 4,085 incredable10 mile racers and 7,753 amazing marathoners. If your wondering about the name, Medtronic is a locally headquared medical device giant that has been gracious enough sponsor the TCM since 2006 – so they get top billing.

This massive 3 story tall white onyx stone statue called the ‘Vision of Peace’ is located in the main floor of the Ramsey County Court House downtown St. Paul, MN - More than you probably want to know: The 'Vision of Peace' is the largest carved onyx figure in the world weighing 60 tons, stands 36 foot tall and is mounted on a slowly rotating base that goes 66 degrees in both directions in 2.5 hours. The statue depicts Native Americans sitting around a fire smoking peace pipes. The main figure, nick named 'Onyx John', holds a pipe in one hand and makes a gesture of good will with the other. It was designed by Swedish sculptor Carl Milles and was completed in 1936 surrounded by black marble and brass interior with gold mirrors on the ceiling that reflects it all back to the viewer. It was originally called ‘Indian God of Peace’ but was later renamed to ‘Vision of Peace’ in 1994 cuz calling something Indian or God wasn't cool. The Ramsey County Court House is one awesome looking Art Deco gem and if you can pass security, they let you photograph all you want.

Minnehaha Falls - Satin

Minnehaha Falls - Satin
Made by HelenJr
Poem: Thus the youthful Hiawatha Said within himself and pondered, Much perplexed by various feelings, Listless, longing, hoping, fearing, Dreaming still of Minnehaha, Of the lovely Laughing Water, In the land of the Dacotahs.... ....And he journeyed without resting, Till he heard the cataract's laughter, Heard the Falls of Minnehaha Calling to him through the silence. Pleasant is the sound! he murmured, Pleasant is the voice that calls me! - Henry W. Longfellow, Song of Hiawatha - Hiawatha's Wooing www.infoplease.com/t/lit/song-hiawatha/chapter10.html __________________________________ Minnehaha Falls, Minneapolis, Minnesota - Named for Minnehaha, Hiawatha's lovely Indian maiden. I've taken many unsatisfying shots of this waterfall. Even a new camera didn't help. I wanted the sound, the churn, the mist, the splash, the sparkle. Today my camera showed me the satin flow of all of that water moving together. Not single drops, but unity of purpose. I am content.

st. paul - saint paul - minnesota, mn

Made by Dan Anderson.
st. paul - saint paul - minnesota, mn The view of downtown St. Paul, MN (Saint Paul, Minnesota) from the city's West Side River buffs – kind of a homage to all the spectacular sunsets we have had this summer in Minnesota. Check out the other Twin City, . More than you probably want to know: I’ve had a few questions regarding how this Saint Paul shot was processed, so here goes an explanation: this one picture is really a composite of multiple images (some HDR), taken from the same spot, over a 2 hour period, just before and after sunset and then selected/mixed/blended/masked using multiple layers in Photoshop. The foreground is from earlier shots when you could still see color in the trees, the buildings and street lights came from shots taken later when the lights turned on. The sky was not nearly so dramatic; I moved and combined a group of cloud elements from that night and then painted them with shades of blue, yellow and white in Photoshop using blend modes, layer gradients and back lighting to give it some impact - and that's about it :D

Take a look at my new website Okay, I'm not quite sure what happened, but I think the explore algorithm burped and put me on there...because I'm pretty sure a photo with only 4 comments and 3 faves does not equate explore...so while I'm astounded that happened, I'm actually quite irritated the photo before (my favorite Mount Rainier shot) it didn't make explore...so let's see...a shot that received a decent amount of attention (28 comments and 20 faves) gets beat by some upstart monkey with 4 comments and 3 faves...is the algorithm making some sort of weird apology by giving my ninja monkey attention instead? Is it just me or is that a little odd? I swear this little guy was projecting the following thought into my head: Let me out, I'll ride on your shoulder and pull sneaky ninja pranks on everyone. I'll be the best pet ninja monkey ever!

st. paul mn - 1st bank roof sign

st. paul mn - 1st bank roof sign
Made by Dan Anderson.
From the roof of the First National Bank building in downtown St. Paul, MN. More than you probably want to know: The First National Bank building was constructed in 1931 and at 417ft it was the tallest building in Saint Paul Minnesota for over 55 years. Although 3rd tallest today, it's still the most recognizable building in town because of it's cool art deco architecture and because of the big red neon '1st' sign on the roof. The '1st' sign is a local icon that can bee seen from 75 miles away at night and 20 miles away on a clear day. It has 3 sides, is 50ft or over four stories tall, made up of 4,00ft feet of neon tubing, and when it blinks 'on' everything round it glows red. I’ve had a few questions about this . . . and sadly no, the Fist Bank roof is not open to the public. I got access through a friend of a friend of a friend :D

School kids field tripping on the roof of the Minnesota State Capitol building in Saint Paul - checking out the view and the big gold statue. More than you probably want to know: The golden quadriga statue is called the ‘Progress of the State’. Quadriga is the Latin name for a chariot drawn by four horses. This statue was created in 1906 and contains quite a bit of symbolism. The horses represent the four elements (earth, air, fire, water). The two women represent industry and agriculture. The guy represents prosperity (his flag says Minnesota) and collectively they all represent civilization. The statue is made from copper, steel and is covered in gold-leaf. It was taken down for a year in 1994 to be restored so it's still nice and shiny. This picture came from the first outing with my new 120-400mm zoom :D

japanese lantern lighting festival - como park st. paul, mn
Made by Dan Anderson.
I went to the Japanese Lantern Lighting Festival at Como Park in St. Paul, MN last Sunday. The afternoon long activities ended at dusk when paper lanterns were lit and floated across the Frog Pond in front of the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory. This event takes place every August on the Como Park Zoo & Conservatory grounds in a tribute to Japan's annual Obon Holiday. Buddhist tradition says that during Obon ancestral spirits revisit their families for three days. Many Japanese will return home to pay their respects at grave-sites and often paper lanterns are lit and floated down the river to help guide the spirits. This year took on special significance as everyone remembered those lost in Japan's devastating earthquake and tsunami disasters. 平和、ヒース、理解、繁栄

Bones of a old airplane hanging from the ceiling in the Great Hall rotunda of the Minnesota History Center St. Paul, MN More than you probably want to know: The airplane is a replica of a Curtiss ‘Jenny’ made famous during WW1 and the plane of choice for many early century barnstormers. The planes where nicknamed ‘Jenny’s’ because the Curtis Aeroplane Company numbered their planes starting with the initials 'JN' (which, if you say it fast, sounds like Jen). A Jenny is also the first plane flown by Charles Lindbergh who spent most of his childhood in Little Falls, Minnesota - he became a big deal so we call him a Minnesotan - and that's why this old plane is hanging in our History Center. Shout out to Mr. Lyle Landstrom, Sr., one of the awesome builders of this plane.

A tall plume rises from a factory on the shores of the Mississippi River, just south of downtown Saint Paul, Minnesota. This was taken back in January. I've hdr'd it to get the most out of the colors and textures. Interestingly, for the longest time I thought this photo wasn't usable because the trees obstruct the factory. Like the factory had to be 'clear of obstructions' somehow for the photo to be 'right.' Leaving the photo alone & coming back to it two months later, I see that's not true at all. It looks cool like this. So once again I learn that photography is largely in the mind. There's the photograph you want, and the photograph you get. Once you stop dreaming about the first and start looking at the second, you discover a lot of beauty you didn't even know you had.

I really like yellow. It's warm, fresh, bright. But, I don't like yellow rooms. That's just too... yellow. Yellow is a team player. It looks best against another color, most any other color, I think. The colors together show us so much more than they can offer alone. Friends are like colors.... variety and contrast brings us richness that sheer volume can't. _____________________________________________ Song: Rubber Ducky, you're so fine And I'm lucky that you're mine Rubber ducky, I'm awfully fond of - Rubber ducky, I'd like a whole pond of - Rubber ducky I'm awfully fond of you! - Jeffrey Moss, sung by Ernie on Sesame Street www.niehs.nih.gov/kids/lyrics/rubberducky.htm

Iridium 59 and 96 version 1
Made by Mulad
Simultaneous Iridium flares occurred up and down Minnesota on Friday, February 9, 2007, running from Albert Lea in the south to Hibbing in the north, and crossing pretty much right over my head. At my location, they reached maximum brightness at 7:23:34 PM, at an estimated magnitude -8. Both had an azimuth of 22°. Iridium 96 had an altitude/elevation of 41° while Iridium 59 was at 40°. Unfortunately, it's highly likely that I didn't have the camera focused properly... I also probably had the aperture a bit wide, and I had to use the curves tool to darken the image to what you see there. See this or the Star Tribune article.

A sign on this boat says The Covington Inn - Bed and Breakfast. It's permanently moored to a pier on Harriet Island, right across from downtown Saint Paul, Minnesota. (www.covingtoninn.com) I've never visited beautiful Harriet Island before. And perhaps midnight on a cold, damp March night wasn't the best time to have a first look. But if the place was empty and shadowy, it was also very beautiful and had wonderful views of Saint Paul. This is the second night in a row that I've been graced with city views across a Mississippi River that is as smooth as a pond. I must have good photo karma stored up somewhere.
