So here it is - the origins of Gothic - and I had to get in on the act! That's me having laid out the camera with timer onto the floor and nervously holding my Billingham Bag in awe of being at the birthplace of Gothic...... Pevsner says Whoever designed the choir at St Denis, one can safely say, invented the Gothic style...the pointed arch, the flying buttress, and the rib-vault....What was decisively new....was the combination of these motifs for a new aesthetic purpose. La partie la plus ancienne de la basilique : des sarcophages en pierre sculptée de nobles mérovingiens... non identifiés ! Et même la grosse surprise qui attendait Violet-le-Duc quand il a découvert cette partie : au premier plan, un sarcophage beaucoup plus ancien : la basilique a été construite sur un cimetière gallo-romain !
