Safeco Field, sometimes simply referred to as "Safeco" for short or even "The Safe," is the home of the Seattle Mariners baseball club. The stadium has a retractable roof with a train line running under the roof when it is open. Trains can be heard blowing their horns during the games. The stadium seats 46,621 for baseball. It was the host for the 2001 MLB All-Star Game. Other events have been held at Safeco Field, including the 2001 college football Seattle Bowl and WWE WrestleMania XIX, which set a Safeco Field attendance record of 54,097 in 2003.

A transportation photo! In order from bottom to top: railroad (in front of fence; just below picture), street (lower left), circular ramp of road crossing the tracks from the west (circling from north [left] and back to north to head east), pedestrian walkway on same ramp (but with curious variation in middle of loop), I-90 off ramps, I-90 on ramps, I-90,12th street (green bridge upper left). There are at least several more transportation routes hidden in this photo: walking, biking, public buses and light rail. There is a dirt walking path (if you don't mind walking past homeless encampments) on the hill in the trees running below the orange hospital. Someday this route will be improved to complete the Mountains to Sound Bike Path all the way to the SODO area of Seattle. There is also a bike lane visible at the curb in the lower right of the photo. More subtly, I think parts of the Link light-rail station and certainly some buses or at least a major city bus maintenance yard are just visible in the gap below the off-ramps on the right-hand side. Maybe, the only thing this photo is missing is an airplane flying in to land at the nearby Boeing Field. I should retake the photo during the Seattle Boat Show when a big trailer comes by with a boat on it in order to get water transportation represented. :-) The orange building is part of the genesis story of Amazon.com. In 2010 some of Amazon corporate were still in this building, but by early 2011 that was but a memory as the company moved everything to South Lake Union on the other side of central business district of Seattle.

And the 0-1 pitch on the way to Edgar Martinez... The 2011 edition of the Seattle Mariners Baseball Club have been a tough bunch to watch for much of the season.Their sad story includes setting a franchise record for 17 straight losses, and a historic inability to score runs. Currently 16 games under .500 and 15 games out of first place their season has been over for some time now. So while at a game during their record setting lossing streak I snapped a photo of Thom Ross’ ‘The Defining Moment’ an art piece located near the Left Field Gate which captures the celebration which occurred after Edgar Martinez lined a double into left field scoring Ken Griffey Jr. from first base and advancing the Mariners into the American League Championship Series. On questionably the greatest moment in Mariner’s history. I still get chills listening to Dave Niehaus’ call of the play. Feel free to relive the moment or hear it for the first time here. It’s good to relive past glories in such tough times, and remind ourselves that while the Mariners are a bottom dweller and have been for some time now, there was a time when they electrified the city and saved baseball in this town.

If they don’t win its a shame... This was taken entering Safeco Field for the Mariners 2011 home opener. Their is something special about opening day of the baseball season. Every team starts 0-0, hope springs eternal for every fan base no matter their chances. Sadly this will probably be the Mariner’s only sell out this season as they have lost 100 game in two of their last three seasons with no hope in sight for a major turn around. Never the less, I am a baseball fanatic. How much you ask? Well I college I wrote my formal research paper for the WWU History Department on the rise and fall of the Negro Leagues as seen through the Pittsburgh Courier Newspaper. Football might have captured the attention span of America lately, and perhaps rightfully so, it will never have the same nostalgic sense to it as baseball does. If you don’t believe me, go to your local bookstore and compare the amount of books written about the two sports, baseball’s section will more than likely be double footballs. Opening day is something special, to me its like a holiday. And while the rest of the Mariners season might be slow and tortuous, for one day at least the stands are full and optimism is in the air.

I don’t really like posting something that’s similar to one of my other shots. I was even standing in the same exact spot! But this shot isn’t part of the panorama I made of the field a couple months back. I shot this one with just one frame in mind. Only thing I changed was trying to make it more natural than the pano was. Although it’s still pretty crazy. haha Anyway, only posting this cuz I feel dumb for posting that weird shot on my stream yesterday because I was so bored at school. I deleted that one. I was on the news yesterday too... not for photography though, haha. I wish. My school's cross country team is nationally ranked so they had a short news story made about us. Check it out if you want www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=103192589694840#/video... I don't know if you could view it though since I can only find it on one of my friends profiles on Facebook. definitely worth it. #371 in interestingness (on 2009-9-27)

The clock

The clock
Made by Nick Kanta
So, I'm kind of a cheapskate when it comes to going to games. Most times, I prefer the cheap seats. The bleachers. Centerfield at Safeco sets you back seven bucks. Seven stinking bucks and you can watch a Major League Baseball game in the prettiest ballpark in the land. So taking this stance, I have stared at the clock behind the left field grandstands a bunch of times. Its a nice clock, says Mariners and everything. But it wasn't until my amazing wife surprised me with tickets along the first base line, and for a night game to boot, that I really noticed how incredible this clock is. The thing is perhaps the biggest friggin' neon sign I have ever laid my eyes on. (Except maybe for the old Rainier beer sign on the top of the brewery) The color radiating off of this thing as the game progressed what nothing short of spectacular. What a treat. It became just one more part of Safeco that I love. And just one more reason that us baseball fans of the Northwest have the best ballpark of all.

The second(?) reverse-commute train pushes into King Street Station. Also seen here is the new ramp to Safeco. I took a 71 to the Downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel, and rather than walking to Safeco from International District, I hopped on the next busway-bound vehicle that rolled through the tunnel. It happened to be a 106, however I could have also used a 41, 101, 102, 150, or Link Light Rail. I don't like the extra walking, but if it reduces injuries and/or fatalities, I'm for it. Also, I suppose trains are able to maintain a higher speed through the crossing since it's not a crossing any more. More reactions in the photo notes.

The Mariners took it to the Phillies today, 2 - 0. The win put Seattle within 1/2 game of the lead in the American League West, and gave them the series win against the team with the highest win/loss record in the major leagues. Jason Vargas pitched a two-hit, shut-out. We 're beginning to believe again!! There were over 45,000 fans on this Father's Day today! Secretly I was hoping to run into Gabi Campanario, but alas, the crowd was just a bit too huge to find anyone, although we did run into Nathan D., a kid who used to live next door when we lived on this side of the state. Small world; but no Gabi. :-)

June 23, 2010 Safeco Field Seattle Mariners vs. Chicago Cubs I first uploaded a HDR version of this photo, but I just wasn't happy with it. It was lacking that certain pop element. So I took the middle of the three exposures and simply edited it like a normal shot. Overall I think I am more pleased with the result. I'm not a big fan of HDR but I have been giving it a try. I need to work on my HDR processing technique. Who knows, I may revisit this one once I get the hang of it. But anyway... I really liked Safeco field and I thought this location offered a great perspective of the ballpark.

NON-HTML COMMENTS ARE MOST APPRECIATED :-) Definitely the biggest photo project I have ever undertaken. Literally! Made from 8 handheld HDR shots, a total of 24 raw photos at -2, 0, +2. The original 16-bit tiff took half an hour to stitch together then 5 minutes just to save! If you like my photos please don't hesitate to comment, fave, or especially add me as a contact! :-) #41 in interestingness (on 2009-07-28) Most Interesting photo of Safeco Field on Flickr (2009-11-21) 3rd most interesting photo tagged baseball on Flickr :D (June 26, 2010)

www.ChrisFinneganPhotography.com So, I'm sorry for not being more active the last week... My internet suffered a blow and finally took a 10 count. So, it was time to upgrade equipment. Now... back on-line!!!! The simple things! My next series is from Safeco Field in Seattle WA. Back on April 2nd, I went out shooting with my Flickr Friend, David Irons I have really enjoyed my time shooting with him. We get to bounce ideas off of each other and look at many different compositions.

My lovely wife looking cute for me under the lights at Safeco! It was a fun night the Beck's beer company handed out bunches of free stuff! The Seattle Mariners put on an Oktoberfest promotion this year. If you paid a bit extra and was among the first 500 people you received a special edition stein! There was traditional German folk dancing before the game in the center field beer garden and a large variety of German brews on draft! Camera: Minolta X-700 Film: Kodak Portra 400 Location: Safeco Field, Seattle Went to a Mariners game with some friends while on vacation last week. My buddy picked up this Mariner themed Hulk Hand from the team shop before first pitch. Priced at 20 bucks he certainly over paid. But it was quite comical to watch him drink his beer out of it. And of course it comes in handy when you want to punch the seat in front of you when Chone Figgins hits a dribbler to first ending the inning and stranding runners on second and third.

I loved the Kingdome. This ugly structure that filled the Seattle skyline for years was where my love for baseball was born. This is where I saw the first game with both Griffeys play, where I saw Alex Rodriguez' first RBI, where I saw Randy Johnson dominate with a mustache that still gives me the chills and really where I became a good friend with my dad for taking me to so many games. But, now after something like 12 years in the Safeco Filed, is just as true as ever, baseball is meant to be played under the sun.

Although the roof can close on the Seattle Mariners' Safeco Field, it's more of an umbrella so even then there is a lot of open space. Either way, you are outside in Seattle, and that openness is a triumph. With the two bold colors, this is also a Seattle sandwich on field and sky bread ... The bluest skies I've ever seen are in Seattle :) Our iconic Space Needle notes an intriguing appearance; the past's future, always on the horizon?

This is actually a shot I took after we left the Mariners game. It's the Silver Cloud Hotel across from Safeco and Qwest Field. I love the lighting in this picture. Used a longer shutter speed (1/6). Not a bad seat in the house. While on vacation I took in a afternoon baseball game at Safeco Field with some buddies. There is nothing better than a afternoon in the sun at the ballpark. The crack of the bat, the stadium announcers voice echoing throughout the yard, the smell of the concessions, beer (not so much the price), and if your at Safeco Field the sound of the train as it whistles on by. It certainly beats being at work, but that goes without saying.

A wide view of Safeco Field, from out center field seats. If we home in Fenway, we would be outside the park sitting this far back. While I did like Safeco, this shot kind of explains why I am not fond of new statiums. From this view, this could be any park in any city. Other than the barely visible Welcome to Safeco Field writing on the press box, this looks just like the same view of Camden and Philly, the other new parks I have been to.

This week has seen the return of Wintery weather to the great PNW and the return of baseball to the Arizona desert. To celebrate the return of the great American Pastime I decided to break out some shots from a trip last summer to the ballpark. It was a chilly Seattle night, but one that proved memorable for the nice color the sunset offered, the faces of my two boys as they took in the ballpark and the amazing talent of one Ichiro!
