Santa Sofia - Estambul
Made by Paco - Ojos Negros

Made by Vince Millett
Kanuni Sultan Süleyman's tomb. From Wiki: Suleiman I (Ottoman Turkish: سليمان Sulaymān, Turkish: Süleyman; almost always Kanuni Sultan Süleyman in Turkish) (November 6, 1494 – September 5/6, 1566), was the tenth and longest-serving Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, reigning from 1520 to 1566. He is known in the West as Suleiman the Magnificent and in the East, as the Lawgiver (in Turkish Kanuni; Arabic: القانونى, al‐Qānūnī), deriving from his complete reconstruction of the Ottoman legal system. Suleiman became the pre-eminent monarch of 16th century Europe, presiding over the apogee of the Ottoman Empire's military, political and economic power. Suleiman personally led Ottoman armies to conquer the Christian strongholds of Belgrade, Rhodes, and most of Hungary before his conquests were checked at the Siege of Vienna in 1529. He annexed most of the Middle East in his conflict with the Persians and large swathes of North Africa as far west as Algeria. Under his rule, the Ottoman fleet dominated the seas from the Mediterranean to the Indian Ocean. At the helm of an expanding empire, Suleiman personally instituted legislative changes relating to society, education, taxation and criminal law. His canonical law (or the Kanuns) fixed the form of the empire for centuries after his death. Not only was Suleiman a distinguished poet and goldsmith in his own right; he also became a great patron of culture, overseeing the golden age of the Ottoman Empire's artistic, literary and architectural development. In a break with Ottoman tradition, Suleiman married a harem girl who became Hurrem Sultan, whose intrigues in the court and power over the Sultan have become as famous as Suleiman himself. Their son, Selim II, succeeded Suleiman following his death in 1566 after 46 years of rule.

A Rose for Süleyman
Made by Linus Gelber
The Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan designed some of the most beautiful mosques in Istanbul, and arguably the most famous among them is the Süleymaniye Mosque, which sits near the campus of Istanbul University. By all reports, the Süleymaniye is an echo of the design of the Aya Sofya, and I'm eager to see it. Unfortunately, it is closed for renovations: only a tiny side wing is open for worship, and the grand triumphal dome and center vaulted sections are walled off. I'm pretty disappointed, but perhaps this will be my excuse to come back some day. The heat of the day is on in full force; my brother and I wander out to the cemetery at the side of the mosque, where the quiet tomb of Süleyman is open for visitors. Inside it is quiet and cool. The stone memorials outside bake in the harsh flat midday sun.

Ulu mabed! Seni ancak bu sabah anlıyorum; Ben de bir varisin olmakla bügün mağrurum; Bir zaman hendeseden abide zannettimdi; Kubben altında bu cumhura bakarken şimdi, Senelerden beri ru'yada görüp özlediğim Cedlerin mağfiret iklimine girmiş gibiyim. Dili bir, gönlü bir, imanı bir insan yığını Görüyor varliğının bir yere toplandığını; ... Yahya Kemal

Restorasyonu tamamlanan eser, yeniden hizmete açıldı. İhtişamı daha da parlak, ışıl ışıl ... Sabah namazından önce gitmemize rağmen zor yer bulabildik. Süleymaniye'de Bayram Sabahı Artarak gönlümün aydınlığı her saniyede Bir mehabetli sabah oldu Süleymaniye'de Kendi gök kubbemiz altında bu bayram saati, Dokuz asrında bütün halkı, bütün memleketi Yer yer aksettiriyor mavileşen manzaradan, Kalkıyor tozlu zaman perdesi her an aradan. Gecenin bitmeğe yüz tuttuğu andan beridir, Duyulan gökte kanad, yerde ayak sesleridir. Bir geliş var!.. Ne mübarek, ne garib alem bu!.. Hava boydan boya binlerce hayaletle dolu... Her ufuktan bu geliş eski seferlerdendir; O seferlerle açılmış nice yerlerdendir. ... Yahya Kemal

The Süleymaniye Mosque (Turkish: Süleymaniye Camii) is an Ottoman imperial mosque located on the Third Hill of Istanbul, Turkey. It is the second largest mosque in the city, and one of the best-known sights of Istanbul. Before praying, muslims must wash hands, arms, feet, ankles, head & neck in running water.

Istanbul - Oct 2008 - Hagia Sophia
Made by gareth1953
The Virgin and Child mosaic in the Apse of Hagia Sophia dates from 867AD though the dome itself predates it by 200 years. This building alone warrants a trip to Istanbul but there is so much more to enjoy. Warm, friendly and vibrant the city should be on everybodies must visit list. Unforgettable. See comment below for more information. For some unknown reason I have 2 versions of this picture on my sight. I thought the first was a bit pale so tweaked it slightly however instead of replacing the original I posted the new version again. Both have been seen more than 50 times so I have included one in my 100+ views collection. Confused, you soon will be.

Istanbul - Oct 2008 - Apple Tea Anyone
Made by gareth1953
Not from the Spice Bazaar but from a side street near the Grand Bazaar. We bought a huge lamp from here and I had to lug it back to the hotel room via tram and Shank's Pony. To add insult to injury I carried it with me on the plane home. If that was not bad enough it took my wife 4 months to open the box on her return and it currently resides in the cellar. I know how it feels as I was the 'must-have' buy 26 years ago as well. The title refers to the fact that if you enter a shop or stall in the Bazaar's they will invariably offer you a small, exceedingly hot, glass of apple tea. Very refreshing but also very sweet.

Made by internettin_hoja
YAHYA KEMAL BEYATLI

It is universally acknowledged as one of the greatest buildings of the world and sometimes considered the Eighth Wonder of the World. Its conquest by the Ottomans at the fall of Constantinople is considered one of the great tragedies of Christendom by the Greek Orthodox faithful. (Wikipedia)
