Rurrenabaque
Rurrenabaque is a smaller town in the north of Bolivia, on the Beni River. It has in recent years become popular with international tourism as it is an easy gateway for visits to Madidi National Park (within the Bolivian rainforest), as well as the surrounding pampas. Rurrenabaque is reached by bus, 410 km from La Paz, or by airplane. Rurrenabaque is on the east bank of the Beni River. It is expected that a bridge will be build over the river to connect with the town San Buenaventura on the west bank. The projection has begun in 2006. The airfield in Rurrenabaque has a grass runway. It is expected that a better runway will be build in 2007. (According to BBC News: Ecotourism on the rise in Bolivia. By David Atkinson). Preparations have started in 2006}. Rurrenabaque is a starting point for ecotourism, and some eco-lodges are found in the area. The oldest and best known is Chalalan Ecolodge in Chalalán on the Tuichi River. An other is the San Miguel del Bala Eco-Lodge on the banks of the Beni River, reached by boat 40 minutes up stream from Rurrenabaque.To get to San Buenaventura across the RÃo Beni take one of the watertaxis at Calle Santa Cruz for 1 Boliviano.
By bus
There are daily busses to and from . The journey takes 20 hours. There are generally more people on the bus than seats and there isn't much space to put your legs. You can break the trip in , which is only 17 hours away. On a part of the road from La Paz to a new highway has been opened at the end of 2006, and the old 'death road' is now only for bikers. This 'death road' is also called the Yungas Road.
There are also daily buses to Riberalta and . Inquire about departure times at the bus terminal; they vary wildly. During the rainy season, this road is virtually impassible, and trips may take up to six days. When the road's in good condition, Rurrenabaque-Riberalta should take about 20 hours, and Guayará another four.
There are two offices on Avaroa offering jeep services to nearby towns and even La Paz (US$25 and only 12 hours).
By plane
A grassy field outside town is the main airport. In case it's flooded companies use the landing strip at Reyes, about 45 mins. away. There are daily connections to , but cancellations are common, especially in the rainy season.
- TAM, Santa Cruz s/n, has around two flights weekly to for Bs350. TAM likes the mastercard and Visa logos painted on their office, but only accepts cash or travellers checks.
- Amaszonas, Santa Cruz s/n, tel/fax (3)8922472, is slightly pricier with Bs475, but has several flights daily. Visa and mastercard are accepted, that is, if their reader works.
If you're going east or north from Rurrenabaque there's a flight with TAM from Reyes to the cities of San Borja, Trinidad, Riberalta and (on the border with ).
