Thistle Chapel

Built in 1909 - 11, The Thistle Chapel is dedicated to The Knights of the Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle. The carved gothic stalls display the helms and arms of 16 knights. James VII revived the Order of the Knights of the Thistle in Holyrood Abbey. But in 1688, the abbey was ransacked by an Edinburgh mob, angry over James VII's allegience with the Roman Catholic faith. The Order was given a new home, ironically, in the birthplace of the Scottish Reformation at St. Giles over 200 years later. This space is very small (37 feet by 18 feet), and is rectangular with a stone vault. No two stalls are alike and all are deeply strange and filled with ancient archetypes.

John Knox, who was minister here from 1559 - 1572, began the Scottish reformation. As a result, all of the stained glass, altars, relics and decorations dedicated to St Giles were destroyed and thrown into the Nor Loch during the end of the 16th century. The guillotine of Edinburgh was known as the maiden, and was used, as well as stored, in this church during the 16th century. Not a fun time to be a non-conformist in Scotland. Unesco

Edinburgh in late in the evening. We dropped our rental car at back at the airport and took a shuttle bus into the city. We'd booked the Ibis hotel on the Royal Mile, right in the heart of the Old City. As we walked towards the hotel we were treated to this 'last light' view of St. Giles Cathedral.
