Ori-Robots on a Helping Mission in Toy-kyo
Made by Katrin Ray
Collaborative project Toy-kyo... Happy Miniature Sunday! That is the final enter for this mini-series on Toy-kyo. Our origami Robots are hurrying to give a helping robo-hand to miniature Tokyo. Stay tuned for more toy-some tilt-shift fun in twin-mini-town of Toy-ronto! Bientot a l'ecran! * * * Photo of Tokyo (view from the Sky Deck at the top of Roppongi Hills) by Hisako R Photos of my hand & our Oriland Robots, created & folded by Yuri & Katrin Shumakov --- by Katrin Ray Tilt-shift processing & photomontage by Katrin Ray * * * A note for Origami enthusiasts about Origami Robot Folds from 29 sheets, no glue, this funny modular origami was created in far 1996. It's a fun model to fold, all you have to do is to comprehend folding of a cube-module, then fold several of them and combine them together into a robot - easy :-) Well, maybe not very easy, but very satisfying for sure! You may try your hands in ori-robotics - its diagrams are available for free in our Oriland On-line Studio. Happy robo-folding! :-)

Himamatsuri - Doll Festival. Toy-kyo Style
Made by Katrin Ray
Continuing the collaborative project Toy-kyo... Happy Miniature Sunday and happy Hinamatsuri! We had Hinamatsuri on March 3rd in our Toy-kyo - it is a Girl's Day or Doll Festival. It is customary to do a display of hina dolls (hina means girl or princess) on that day. So, here it is an origami set-up for that occasion :-) Our Orilanders, little origami people made completely out of paper, acting Emperor and Empress, even if they are still Prince and Princess :-) Thought these cheerful Toy-kyo buildings will be a good platform (hina dan) for this display. Stay tuned for more tilt-shift digi-magic in twin-mini-town of Toy-ronto :-) * * * Photo of Tokyo (view from the Sky Deck at the top of Roppongi Hills) by Hisako R Photo of my hand & origami prince & princess, created & folded by me - me, Katrin Ray :-) Tilt-shift processing & photomontage by Katrin Ray * * * By the way, for those interested in origami, the folding instructions for such origami dolls can be found in our book Origami Little People :-) Happy folding!

Summer Night Romance

Every once in a while I think everyone can say their life reaches an interesting point. Maybe only interesting to them, but nonetheless interesting. I think at this time I am at that point in my own life. Those that known me at least for the last few years have known I have been working on a project to help change the music industry for the better. Basically it's a social network for bands and venues only. It allows a band to play any city in the world without knowing anyone or having contacts in those cities, but still play with other bands with the same sound and at venues that promote well, and treat the bands well etc. For the venues it makes them visible to every band passing through that area. The idea is that record labels become less important and therefore have a weaker grip on bands. Thus allowing the band to play where they want and with whom they want. This has been a few long years in the making with setbacks complete redesign of the idea after attending the Google I/O in 2008. Now we are finally about to release an alpha for bands and venues to test and play with and hopefully the first public beta there after. If you are interested you can check out our site at e-venue.net. Exciting times for me. =) Currently Listening: Hatchback - Jetlag

these squiggles are a 30 second panorama (i basically did a 180 degree turn during the 30) from the 3D starfield exhibit in the planetarium at the top (52nd flr) of Mori Tower. the bright squiggles are brighter stars, and you can see that some are behind others (easier if you view it big). i like how the squiggle pattern is pretty much identical on all of them though it's more compressed on some (stars farther away), and spread out on others (closer stars). the place was cool. they set up a grid of clear plastic vertical strings pulled tight on either side of a walkway through a black room. they shine lights that light up the stars where they are spacially in this sector of the milky way. the stars that are farther away appear on the strings farthest from the walkway. they have a small earth at the center of the room so that if you stand there, you see the stars as they appear in our sky. but as you pivot around the room you see how stars in constellations relate spatially and appreciate their respective distances from earth. for example, Orion's belt appears to be in the same plane when viewed from earth because of the stars' similar brightness - but when you can change your vantage point in space, you can see they're light years apart along the line on which you'd measure their disstance from our planet. sorry if that made no sense....

Cheer-up Toy-kyo - Paper Cranes in Town!
Made by Katrin Ray
Continuing the collaborative project Toy-kyo... Happy Miniature Sunday! Toy-kyo is cheering up with all the paper cranes that people fold all over the world with warm withes to Japan. So our little Toy-kyonians are folding too - the crane installation in progress. Join the origami fun and send cheerful vibes to Japan! Folding instructions for the paper crane can be found in on-line Origami Studio at our Oriland. It's not complex folds - try it! Happy folding! Toy-kyo Safety Inspection

Continuing the collaborative project Toy-kyo... Our thoughts with Japan these days... It was powerful earthquake and tsunami. I'm hurry to say that I heard from my Toy-kyo companion, Hisako - she and her family are okay. Our warm wishes to all the people in Japan... Our miniature Toy-kyo is well and I'm just re-checking safety everywhere, including this rooftop roller coaster. Fuji-san Sunset
Made by Scott Barlow
Looking west from the top of the Roppongi Hills Mori Tower in downtown Tokyo and past the concrete jungle which seems to extend as far as the eye can see, lies the 12,388 ft (3,776 m) Mt. Fuji. It's been about 8-9 months since I saw it last - as the weather and my timing just hadn't been right. As an active volcano, Mount Fuji is one of Japan's Three Holy Mountains (三霊山 Sanreizan) along with Mount Tate (Toyama Prefecture) and Mount Haku (Gifu Prefecture) (Wikipedia). EXIF: Exposure Program: Aperture Priority Aperture: f/7.1 Focal Length: 50 mm ISO Speed: 100 (L1.0) Exposure Bias: 0 EV 7 RAW bracketed exposures (-3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3) to feel like you're also there.

THE MORI SPIDER
Made by James Chan "JC Inspiration"
This Mori Spider is at Roppongi Hills. Roppongi Hills is an area with upscale shops and restaurants. As for the Mori Tower (the building in this picture), it is mostly used for office space. You can get a pretty view of Tokyo if you go up to the 52nd and 54th floor, where it is used as an observation deck! I did my homework before visiting Roppongi, mainly on certain angles that I think would come out pretty awesome. But while I was there, there was a dinosaur event going on, so that totally changed my plan. I was sort of bitter, but its okay! I like spiders better anyway! James Chan www.jcinspiration.com

My prayers are with the victims of the earthquake and the tsunami.
Made by Takahiro Yamamoto
I have realized posting a photo here is the only way to tell you all that I'm fine. I was so worried when I saw a big smoke rising up from the direction of my home, but everything around my neighbors looks fine. I'm OK. My families, friends, co-workers are all fine. The trains have all stopped since the earthquake, so many of them have to walk a long way home, but I hope things will be getting normal soon. Let's pray for people who live in the damaged area in Miyagi and other prefectures. Update 01: The trains are starting to move again in Tokyo. Update 02: Hundreds of people have drowned to death in Miyagi. So sad.

70 [tokyo still standing]
Made by eblaser
Tokyo shook hard today but the earthquake proofing we hear so much about lived up to the hype. Normally I wouldn't put the 28th floor of an office building high on my list of places to be during a magnitude 9 earthquake, but despite the occasional doomsday moment, i ended up with a nice warm fuzzy feeling about Mori Tower and its architects. Many people ended up staying overnight either because they coudln't get home (trains are shut down) or because it's safer than their own apartment building. Anyway, for the most part Tokyo is standing strong, hoping this counted as the big one we've been waiting for.

Tokyo @ night

Tokyo, JP . . . . About 35 million people live in the Greater Tokyo Area which encompasses Tōkyō-to and surrounding prefectures, making it the world's most populous metropolitan area. Because of its huge population and wealth, many world records are or were held here, including the most expensive real estate ever ($1.5 million/sq meter in 1990), the most expensive city for over a decade running, the most passengers served by its train system, and has the largest GDP of any metropolitan area in the world. It is considered one of the world's major global cities and a megacity. (from Wikipedia)

Morning Glory
Made by Scott Barlow
I headed into the office on a Wednesday morning and took in the most beautiful Tokyo sunrise that I had ever seen. The sun had risen above the morning clouds and was shining its rays down to Tokyo Bay, past all of the buildings and concrete. In the foreground is the famous Tokyo Tower. This was taken from the 39th floor of Roppongi Hills Mori Tower. EXIF: Exposure Program: Aperture Priority Aperture: f/7.1 Focal Length: 17 mm ISO Speed: 100 (L1.0) Exposure Bias: 0 EV 7 RAW bracketed exposures (-3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3) to feel like you're also there.

On a clear day looking west from the top of the Roppongi Hills Mori Tower in downtown Tokyo, you'll see Mt Fuji. This photo was taken from my archive even though I've since been back. The Tokyo weather and air quality can be sometimes tricky, so you take what you can get :) This is probably one of my top 3 favorite views - I hope you like it! Moonrise over Tokyo
Made by /\ltus
Trey () was in Japan for a 10-day trip and spent a few days here in Tokyo. Was great getting to hookup for a few hours. Not often I get to visit with a fellow Texan *and* go out and shoot HDR (what is it with Texans and HDR anyways? ;-) Figured it best to take him to the top of the Mori building in Roppongi Hills to capture sunset. 2xp HDR rendered photo (tripod mounted) taken shortly after sunset on the other side of the building (thus seeing the Moonrise). Tokyo, Japan

On a breezy and rainy Sunday afternoon in Roppongi Hills, the elements can stop me from getting that fresh shot. I saw this background near the Louis Vuitton shop which had a lot of pink graffiti and to stay dry I shot this between the buidings. Too bad the security guards had a field day with us! (But the shots were worth it!) Strobist: A bare SB-900 camera right, using Nikon CLS in Commander mode. Post-processed with Lightroom and Photoshop CS4. Let me know whatcha think!

Roppongi Hills Mori Tower From Wikipedia : The name Roppongi, which appears to have been coined around 1660, literally means six trees. Six very old and large zelkova trees used to mark the area; first three were cleared, and the last was destroyed during the Pacific War. Another legend has it that the name comes from the fact that six daimyo lived nearby during the Edo period, each with the kanji character for tree or a kind of tree in their names.

Watch the 'progression' of 'this' girl from youth, middle age to old age in this series- see comments below Part of Japan's most popular advertisement of 2008. This talking dog ad made Softbank the number 1 mobile phone company in terms of phones sold last year.
