City Within a City

Marina City is a mixed-use residential/commercial building complex occupying an entire city block on the north bank of the Chicago River. The towers were designed in 1959 by architect Bertrand Goldberg. It was billed as a city within a city, featuring numerous on-site facilities including a theatre, swimming pool, ice rink, bowling alley, several stores and restaurants and of course a marina. Today the complex houses the House of Blues concert hall and Sax Hotel, as well as a health club and a bank. The towers are featured on the cover of the Wilco album Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.

This is the surreally beautiful view that lay outside my hotel window during my recent trip to Chicago. I would sit there eating my room service dinner, gazing at this, and feeling like I was in some kind of dream.
