Designed by Pierre Cuypers, this architectural design won a contest in 1876 to be the home of this collection of art. The building was completed in 1885, and the museum opened that year - the collection was moved from the Hague, where it was founded in 1800. Currently, almost the entire museum is currently closed for renovation, with just select masterpieces moved into a small number of galleries in one wing. I need to go back, if only to see everything that they weren't showing - I refuse to think that those particular items are the best just because the curator's tell me so. :)

Last time I was here, 3 years ago, much of the outside was obscured by scaffolding. The building looks great now, but it's still not open to go inside.
