Royal Canadian Mounted Police
Made by alexknip
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) (French: Gendarmerie royale du Canada (GRC), literally ‘Royal Gendarmerie of Canada’; colloquially known as Mounties, and internally as ‘The Force’) is the national police force of Canada, and one of the most recognized of its kind in the world. It is unique in the world as a national, federal, provincial and municipal policing body. The RCMP provides federal policing service to all of Canada and policing services under contract to the three territories, eight provinces (except Ontario and Quebec), more than 190 municipalities, 184 Aboriginal communities and three international airports.[4] The RCMP was formed in 1920 by the merger of the Royal Northwest Mounted Police (RNWMP, founded 1873) with the Dominion Police (founded 1868). The former was originally named the North-West Mounted Police (NWMP), and was given the Royal prefix by King Edward VII in 1904. Much of the present-day organization's symbolism has been inherited from its days as the NWMP, including the distinctive Red Serge uniform, paramilitary heritage, and mythos as a frontier force. The RCMP/GRC wording is specifically protected under the Trade-marks Act.

One Olympic venue to another, Pt. I
Made by Eric Flexyourhead
Friday evening was all about the women's free program at the 2009 ICU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships, and through absolutely no planning at all, this weekend became some kind of weekend filled with ice skating. Something I never would have imagined and something that I actually hadn't done myself since I was a kid. So I was a little bit concerned that I wouldn't be able to lace up a pair of skates and hit the ice without falling down and hitting the ice really hard! The best thing about being asked to come and check out a special Spirit of BC Family Skate Day session was realizing how incredibly easy and effortless the women competing at the Four Continents made skating look. (Check out and see for yourself.) Damn... it's really not very easy! Oh, and while I'm no huge Olympics fan or supporter, the new speed skating venue in Richmond is actually quite cool. Water Sky Garden
Made by Stephen Rees
Two ephemeral sculptures—sky lanterns up to 60 feet in diameter and 70 feet tall made of steel rings and diaphanous, flexible nets—are suspended in the air, changing shape over time with the play of wind. Inspired by the Nitobe Gardens at UBC and the Sun Yat Sen Chinese Garden in Vancouver’s Chinatown, and informed by the fishing cultures of Richmond, Boston-based public artist Janet Echelman collaborated with Phillips, Farevaag, Smallenberg Landscape Architects and the Cannon Design team to create an ever-changing experience that integrates history with landscape. At a cost of $1.2 million, Water Sky Garden is the single most ambitious public art project the city of Richmond has undertaken. richmondoval.ca/oval-precinct.htm

Olympic Oval Vancouver
Made by alexknip

Richmond Olympic Speed Skating Oval

It was nice to take advantage of the free offer and get a chance to skate on the olympic oval. So much better than skating at a hockey rink since you can get some nice speed on the straight sides and the corners are really wide. Also since the ice surface is so much bigger, it takes a lot more people and time to eat up the ice. On the other hand since the surface is so big they don't resurface it half way through. It's also quite funny to see people playing volleyball, and basketball, or soccer/football in the middle of the oval while you're skating around.

Inside The Oval
Made by Clayton Perry Photoworks
I took a quick peek inside the Richmond Olympic Oval today. I have not been inside the place since the Olympics left town. The ice has long since been replaced with basketball courts and other sports courts but I heard they were having a hard time booking the place (my guess is it probably isn't cheap to rent). When I was in there today, there were 2 teenage boys playing a little basketball one on one but they were the only souls in the place. I foresee this place having a real hard time financially in the years to come.

Mari thinks the strange metal sculpture of a speed skater at the Richmond Olympic Oval is a bit frightening... I just thought this metal man-machine sculpture was really cool. So many interesting bits and pieces and the way the light played on its surfaces was fascinating. Richmond, BC. February 7, 2009.

The architecture of the new Richmond Olympic Oval is really impressive. The entire time I was there, I was thinking it must be a great place to shoot at night. As it turns out, Jody got a few nice shots of the building at night (like ), so I'll definitely make my way back one evening. February 7, 2009.

Pine Beetle Wood
Made by Howard Poon
The wood used to make up the roof of the Richmond Olympic Oval comes from British Columbian trees killed by the mountain pine beetle. This wood is often stained with a light shade of blue on the outer segments of the trunk. One million board feet of pine-beetle-killed wood was used to create the ceiling of the Oval.

I tried using the stitch assist in the G9, but didn't put much effort into it. I saw an commercial on TV for Mojave Experiment on Microsoft Photo Gallery and thought I would try the Beta. This is the result. I thought it wouldn't turn out good due to the varied lighting across the floor but it does look pretty nice.

Inside the Richmond Olympic Speed Skating oval during the March 2009 Essent ISU World Single Distances Speed Skating Championships. I now have great respect for sports photographers not to mention those big $15,000 lenses they use. Speed skaters have to be one of the hardest photo subjects in existence. :)
