Ribe Cathedral 2 - The north face and Commoner's tower
Made by BozzyDK
Originally there were two towers of equal height, but on Christmas night 1283 one of them collapsed killing many people inside the cathedral. The present 52 m high tower, known as the Commoner's Tower, replaced the collapsed tower and was completed in 1333. Originally it was 65 m high and had a spire but that fell down in 1534. The tower was repaired about 60 years later but there was no money for a spire thus the tower got it present flat top from which one can see all over the surrounding countryside. It has thus been used over the centuries as a watchtower and signal tower in times of flood and war.
