Les Catacombes de Paris (The Catacombs of Paris) is network of subterranean tunnels located Roman-era limestone quarries converted into a mass tomb near the end of the 18th century. Officially titled, les carrières de Paris (the quarries of Paris), the catacombs holds the of over 6 million bodies. This small portion of the network in the 14th arrondissement is open to the public, but the totality spans more than 300km in length, passing through most of the Left Bank. Accessing these other passages can be dangerous and, since 1955, has been subject to €60 fine if caught without a guide by the cataflics, special police patrolling the tunnels. The use of the depleted quarries for bone storage was established in 1786, by the order of M. Thiroux de Crosne, Lieutenant General of Police, and Charles Axel Guillaumot, Inspector General of Quarrie, in reaction to the epidemic disease that had broken out in Les Halles due to contamination from improper burials and mass graves--primarily from the large
