DOORWERTH CASTLE
Made by Akbar Simonse
Doorwerth Castle is a medieval castle situated on the river Rhine near the city of Arnhem, Netherlands. The first castle, probably wooden, was first mentioned in 1260 when it was besieged and burned to the ground, after which it was rebuilt in stone. In 1280 this second castle was again besieged and this time the bailey was burned down. This original castle probably consisted of a simple hall-keep, two stories high and with 1.20 meter thick walls and a surrounding moat which was fed by the nearby river Rhine. During the 14th century the castle was continually enlarged. Until 1402 Doorwerth Castle was the property of the Van Dorenweerd family. Then it was dedicated to the Count of Gelre; Reinald IV by Robert van Dorenweerd. In return Robert was granted the castle and its land in fief. Around the middle of the 15th century the castle was enlarged again, this time by knight Reinald van Homoet, the 10th Lord of Dorenweerd, who was also the owner of Doornenburg Castle. Doorwerth Castle reached its largest form just after the middle of the 16th century under Daem Schellart van Obbendorf, the 15th Lord of Dorenweerd. He made the castle and the group of buildings on the bailey into a unity and adjusted them to the need for more space and comfort. So by 1560 Doorwerth Castle had almost reached its present appearance. Around 1637 the bailey was rebuilt to its present appearance and a dike was build around the castle to prevent it from floodings by the river Rhine. Shortly after, the castle changed ownership due to financial problems and was granted in fief to a German Count; Anton I van Aldenburg. His successors didn't alter the castle or the bailey but only acquired more land. At the end of the 18th century the castle wasn't inhabited any more, but was looked after by a steward for its owners who now lived in England. As a result, the castle was in a neglected state when it was bought, in 1837, by the baron JAP. van Brakell. He carried out a thorough restoration and a complete modernization of the castle. This revival of the castle only lasted for a short time, for after the baron's death in 1844 the castle again fell into neglect; it would have certainly crumbled away had it not been bought, in 1910, by a retired artillery officer; FA. Hoefer. Again the castle was thoroughly restored, undoing some of the 19th century alterations and additions. And after 1913 it was used as a Dutch Artillery Museum. The castle suffered heavily in 1944 when it was transformed into a cheerless ruin as a result of German destructiveness and Allied shelling. Directly after WW II a lengthy restoration followed that lasted until 1983. By then the castle was back into its 18th century state and was owned by the Friends of the Castles of Gelderland-foundation who now maintain the castle as a museum. Flower Feathers
Made by ®DS
..or 'Flower Sattelites' as I call them. (actually flying seeds of the common dandelion) They're tiny but once they come in groups they're fun to watch and photograph! The pictures of these Flower Sattelites are actually the result of my first own photography-project I came up with; I was planning to photograph , but instead found the dandelion flower seeds even more interesting. What I did was pick a BIG bunch of the little seeds and throw them high up in the air standing on a bench. This was in the middle of a field full of them, just before sunset. After blowing them high into the air I'd jump from the bench backwards and photograph them looking upwards to the blue sky. At first pictures were

Body Language When you hold my waist and squeeze me so firmly, my awareness escapes, drains from the sense, floods into my veins. Unconscious like blood- your touch is like blood, like unconscious blood, crawling and creeping, warm, thick and dark, beating every fine artery, my narrowest vessel, not missing a cell of my trembling body: sparking each atom in me. Now squeeze me baby, and set my mind free replace all my thoughts from my brain to my hands, from my hands to my fingers, to my thighs, to my sighs, to you and the tip of your finger... Hello there, This is a weir in a place called Driel (the Netherlands). In this position it's shut down. Click on for the shot I've made a few years ago in an open position. The shot your now watching is made with a ND110 filter, 5 times. Those 5 are blend in Photomatix. Finally some tuning in CS. I 'm pleased to see the reflection in the water, it's something I didn't see while I was busy. Greetings my dear viewer/contact/friends from the Netherlands.

Castle Doorwerth III
Made by tokek belanda (very busy)
Explore: #467, 24 november, 2009 This medieval castle is supposed to be haunted by the ghost of a little girl who died of starvation. British investigators discovered three other ghosts and in 2004 castle Doorwerth featured in the BBC program The most haunted... After our coffee break the weather changed and it became very cloudy. My photos turned out way too dark so I edited them and gave them a haunted look... ;-) (best viewed in Large) 30 july, 2009

You can find this castle in the Netherlands. The first time that was spoken of this building was around 1260. But then it was much smaller. During the century's there was a lot of demolition an construction. The picture is a 5 shots HDR with a wide-anglelens. Photomatix and Neatimage did the job. The corners are very fuzzy but I like the clouds so much that I wish to share thisone with you.

Window on the Past (Explored)
Made by j.elemans
This ancient mirror, Is like a window on the past. In days of old things looked simpler, As life wasn’t moving so fast. The poor were oppressed with injustice, And knew more misery than now meets the eye. So, despite this peaceful scene, I am glad those days have gone by.

This is a weir in a place called Driel (the Netherlands). It's supposed to shut when the water is getting dangerously low.I find it a beautiful piece of machinery. This picture is made from three shots and Autostitch (PS did a bad thing trying to connect the arches). Btw It was a very nice day for driving my motorbike over the dike. Ooh, life can be good!

Amazing how this bee looks so mean, even though he was dying or really tired. I was taking a (failed) photograph, and noticed him when setting up my tripod. After I took the shot he was still at the same spot, although he tried to walk. All his movements were slow, and this allowed me to try a few angles. Taken with a 50mm at extension tubes at f/5.6

This shot is from October 16, in the same wonderful lighting conditions I was blessed with before. Different focus, different horizon though. / Deze opname is van 16 oktober, met dezelfde prachtige lichtkondities die ik op andere foto's ook had aangetroffen. Ander diafragma, ander tele, de horizon wat hoger dan op andere foto's

Airborne Museum (2)
Made by rene1956 (back)
The Airborne Museum in Oosterbeek is a World War II museum. I thinks it's impressive and it's good to never forget the people who suffered or died during that war. In the basement you can find a Airborne Experience. When you enter it, the vision and sound brings you back to the battlefield. Let us never forget....

Its in my heart and in my soul...
