Reni is located in a remote part of Ukraine: The westernmost town of the Budjak (Odesa Oblast), just 20 km from the Romanian city of Galaţi. Half of its population is Romanian (aka Moldovan), the rest are Ukrainians, Russians, Bulgarians, Gagauz and Gypsies. Main language in the city is still Russian, despite the Romanian plurality and the closeness to Romania. During our visit, the city had quite a desolate air, the young man we spoke to told us that everybody drinks and smokes a lot there, even children. There's work only in the harbour and in some factories. At least, the Lenin is well cared, with fresh colours (including the coat of arms of the Soviet Union).
