New York, New York, so good they named . . . . . wait!

New York, New York, so good they named . . . . . wait!
Made by grantthai
. . . this is not New York . . it's Bangkok. Even though the day was very hazy, as I said on , I didn't want to waste my 200 Baht in getting up the Baiyoke Sky Tower. A little bit of processing was needed in PS to remove the haze, and then converted to B&W which I think is better than the colour version. Note: New York, New York, So Good They Named It Twice is a song performed and composed by singer-songwriter, Gerard Kenny as an ode to his hometown, and state. Kenny wrote the song about myth versus fact and explains that the city is overall a great place (It was a really nice night for a good street fight or a robbery/But I always knew in my home town that would never happen to me). The line So Good They Named It Twice is a play on the fact the name of the city and state are both New York. New York, New York (as it is sometimes simply called) was the first hit for Kenny after a number of non-charting singles back home in the United States. In 1978, after moving to England the song was released. Although it got no higher than Number 42 on the UK Singles Chart, it remained there for two months. It also received much airplay, and was included on Kenny's Made It Through The Rain album, and the song's popularity helped the collection reach the top 20. Britain's Shirley Bassey later covered the song, as part of a medley of songs about New York City.

"White Elephant" | Makkasan City Air (Train) Terminal, Bangkok

The Suvarnabhumi Airport Rail Link (Thai: รถไฟฟ้าเชื่อมท่าอากาศยานสุวรรณภูมิ, แอร์พอร์ตลิงก์ Airport Link) or SARL, is a rapid transit line in Bangkok, Thailand. The line provides as an airport rail link from Suvarnabhumi Airport, via Makkasan city air terminal, to Phaya Thai station in central Bangkok. Most of the line is on a viaduct over the main eastern railway. It is owned by State Railway of Thailand (SRT) and operated by SRT subsidiary SRT Electrified Train (SRTET). Opened on August 23, 2010[1], the 28.6-km route is the fourth rapid transit line in Bangkok, after 2 BTS and 1 MRT line. Services consists of two Express Lines, a 15-minute nonstop service between the Makkasan city air terminal and the airport and an 18-minute nonstop service between Phaya Thai and the airport, and the City Line, a commuter rail service with 8 stations. I title it White Elephant' as inexplicably the SRT decided to build the biggest station on the airport express line with no direct connect to the skytrain, underground or even a bus. Road access is lousy as well! As such when I took this shot at 9pm I was out-numbered by station employees who were eager to tell me that using a tripod was forbidden. Too late!

The khim . .

The khim . .
Made by grantthai
EXPLORE #165 - 21 March 2008. Thanks to everyone who stopped by. . . (Thai: ขิม; pronounced kim, with a rising tone, in Thai) is a hammered dulcimer from Thailand and Cambodia. It is made of wood and trapezoidal in shape, with numerous brass strings. It is played with two flexible bamboo sticks and is used as both a solo and ensemble instrument. The instrument was introduced to Thailand and Cambodia from China, where a similar (though usually larger) instrument is called yangqin; the khim produces a significantly softer sound. Traditional khim have two bridges, though in the late 20th century some players began using larger instruments with more bridges. [Wikipedia] Taken last night in Bangkok's King Power Pullman Hotel.

This is the 360 view from the Baiyoke Tower II in Bangkok, the highest building there. This tower is 304m high. I was on the revolving roof at the 84th floor to shoot this pano. It's based on 13 HDR pictures stitched together. The final image is 60Mb and 17421x4196 pixels. So far the pictures from Thailand were following a chronological order but I generated this one this evening and I couldn't resist to share it with you :) I uploaded a smaller version but it's still full of details in full size so please take the time to visit Bangkok in full size :)

Dignity of Labour

Dignity of Labour
Made by Michael LaPalme
The statue of the pushing wheel title Dignity of Labour by artist Suraphol Preechawachira sits outside the Thai Labour Museum on Makkasan Road near the Ratchaprarop intersection in Pratunam. The first ever to be dedicated to the working class, the sculpture takes the form of male and female workers pushing forward with all their might the wheel of history, crushing an army tank along the way. The sculpture symbolizes labour's spirit and unity in their struggle against oppression. 2Bangkok

This was taken on the viewing deck of the Baiyoke Sky Hotel. We were waiting for the sunset, but it was too cloudy, and we didn't get the orange horizon we were hoping for. We decided to wait til it gets dark instead. The views were still amazing. The highway as seen from above was pretty cool. I didn't get to have our lens (Canon 24-105mm F4L IS USM) fixed before the trip and it was stuck at F/4 all through out :( We used the 5D with the Tokina 11-16mm F2.8 lens for this shot. There's a lesson for you not to procrastinate!

As Light Shines on Your Face

As Light Shines on Your Face
Made by The Wandering Angel
All I have to offer is solitude and silence. No accomplishments to speak of, having never finished anything worth finishing except bad relationships and good friendships I now regret not keeping. Those I feel closest to are the farthest away from me while I keep myself distant from those who are near. If all you seek is solitude and silence, this I can promise you without breaking. I only ask, in return, to be allowed my silence and solitude from you. - Solitude & Silence, by Juge Sopczak

@ Baiyoke Sky Hotel Room, 46th Floor. Bangkok is a busy city especially when night falls. Traffic jams everywhere. Ive found that Bangkok has complicated flyovers and most of the highways are on them. This was shot just before the sun goes off. This was taken on the revolving deck of the Baiyoke Sky Hotel. The revolving part made it a bit tricky, so this shot had to be handheld. Thankfully, the 5D is pretty good in low light situations. Below the revolving deck is another viewing floor but the dirty windows made it even more difficult to get good shots. Taken with a Canon 5D Mark II with Canon EF24-105mmm F4L IS USM Lens. After all, the best part of a holiday is perhaps not so much to be resting yourself, as to see all the other fellows busy working. this photo was taken during my last trip to thailand this year in May, we were in the tallest building in Bangkok looking down this busy city waiting for the sunset. You may also click the link below to check out the photo i took from the same place at sunset as well!

I lived in an apartment just off of this behemoth for a little more than two years. Some of the traffic jams we'd see on this network were unbelievable. This is looking towards Din Daeng across Soi Mor Ling which is completely surrounded by the expressway system. View from the 84th floor of the Baiyoke II Tower in Bangkok.

Ratchaprasong intersection before the red-shirt protesters took over. Currently now the main protest hub, with a stage area and other facilities . Lucky with the timing as everything kicked off just before I left. Single exposure image. Wife's not been feeling well so been doing all the house work and stuff! :( Hence the long time I've been away from flickr.
