Begging outside the temple of the Creator, does she ever wonder why?

Begging outside the temple of the Creator, does she ever wonder why?
Made by mksfoto
Or does she accept it as her fate (kismat)? Saw this woman begging for alms outside the temple of Brahma, the creator, at Pushkar. ------------------------------------------- Destiny is an important concept in Hinduism, linked to karma. It is only this doctrine that explains the mysterious problems of paradoxes, reconciles the real and apparent justice in life. When we observe the inequalities of birth and fortune, of intellect and capacities, when fools and profligates are honored while with all one's intellect and noble virtues far more deserving in every way perishing for want and of lack of sympathy - it is this blessed knowledge of 'Karma' alone which prevents us from cursing life [Blavatsky, Mdm, in ' Secret Doctrine' (p.19-20) article in 'Karma, the Universal law of harmony, pub : TPH ] All the great religious traditions have recognized this basic polarity. For the Buddhist, the recurrent cycle of births and deaths are subject to the law of interdependent origination, recognizing that the wheel is turned by man's own hand; for the Hindu, the inexorable law of karma, action which ever turns upon itself in reaction, operates throughout the universe; for the Christian, the assurance that Whatsoever ye sow that shall ye also reap is affirmation of a lawfulness pervading all universal processes [Mills, Jay in the foreword ( p.viii) to (1) above.] For more details and arguments -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In Explore for 03 March 2009. Brahma Kund, Pushkar

Brahma Kund, Pushkar
Made by mksfoto
--------------------------------------------------------- Pushkar is a sacred town for the Hindus, situated 11 kms. to the North-West of Ajmer and 400kms from Delhi. The charm of this sleepy, lakeside settlement so captivated the great Indian poet, Kalidas, that it found a place in his classic, Abhigyan Sakuntalam. The epics of Mahabharat and Ramayana make references to this religious place regarded to be Adi Tiratha. Evidence points to its having existed during the fourth century B.C. A lake in the inhospitable surroundings of a desert is no less than a miracle. A legend about Brahma, the creator in the trinity, describes the creation of this lake. When the demon Vajra Nabha killed Brahma's children, he in turn struck him with his weapon, a lotus flower. Vajra Nabha died with the impact, and the petals of the lotus fell at three places. One of them is Pushkar, where a lake sprung into being. Brahma is supposed to have performed sacrifice at this lake on Kartik Purnima (the full moon day of the Kartik month), hallowing the place. Sacred to Brahma, Pushkar boasts of the only temple dedicated to him. It is believed that a dip in the waters of Pushkar and worship at his temple ensure salvation. So thousands flock to Pushkar to observe the ritual on kartik Purnima, or on any of the four days preceding it. -------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- [In Explore for 23 Feb 2009. It is time for Lunch - Pushkar Camel Fair

It is time for Lunch - Pushkar Camel Fair
Made by Anoop Negi
Pushkar is a small town of much religious significance for the nearby areas of the inhabitants of the state of Rajasthan in India. It is a non descript town shebang in the dry dusty desert and is a international destination for a whole lot of people who come to visit thsi place in November to see the largest gathering of camels in the world. It is the home for the oldest and the largest Camel Fair in the world. If you are a photographer, your photographic journey is incomplete if you have not been here. So what are you waiting for ? I paid my obeisance to this holy grail way back in 2007 and spent a few hurried days in Ajmer, a much larger town situated 22 kms away where I could scrounge a last minute acommodation at exorbitant prices. Life at the fair goes on much like what it would have been centuries ago. Camels are everywhere. The tents spring up and dot the entire landscape. The herders and the traders carry on their activity in the midst of it all. In this take, a family gets it lunch ready. Pappu Devi

Pappu Devi
Made by Elishams
I saw so many pictures of her on Internet, I was keen to meet her but she kept hidden. I than met her cousin Hemaram Bopa and his wife Santosh, singing in the sunset with their daughter Rajuri. They told me Pappu suffered from the loss a her new born son, ten days ago. The poor baby breathed one hour and gasped… By chance she already has two daughters and one son. We arranged a meeting for the next morning, and Hemaram took me to the young lady. She new I was coming, she was dressed in full attire. We spent the day all together with her familly, talking of their musical tradition. I asked Pappu if her photo taken by so many people had do her some good, the response was « yes ». A couple from Holland has publish a booklet and given some money wich allowed her to rent a small house near Pushkar, a man has buy a little shop for her. She got much relief from this. Her husband was there all the time, he said he didn’t mind foreigners taking pictures of his wife. He did’nt see her before wedding, since they had the traditionnal « arranged mariage » currently performed in India. I guess you know he is happy… Pappu devi, that's how he call her. And so she is.

Mehrangarh Fort and the blue city of Jodhpur at sunrise, Rajasthan, India. The fort is situated 400 feet (122 m) above the city and is enclosed by imposing thick walls. Inside its boundaries there are several palaces known for their intricate carvings and expansive courtyards. A winding road leads to and from the city below. The imprints of cannonball hits by attacking armies of Jaipur can still be seen on the second gate. To the left of the fort is the chhatri of Kirat Singh Soda, a soldier who fell on the spot defending the Mehrangarh fort. There are seven gates, which include Jayapol (meaning 'victory'), built by Maharaja Man Singh to commemorate his victories over Jaipur and Bikaner armies. Fattehpol (also meaning 'victory') gate was built by Maharaja Ajit Singh to mark the defeat of the Mughals. The palm imprints upon these still attract much attention even today.(wikipedia) Photo Gallery My blog about India

Jewelry in the Indian desert

Jewelry in the Indian desert
Made by Ginas Pics
At the time of the Pushkar Mela, during the full moon in November up in Rajasthan there is a big market. Everything is on sale there, equipment the farmers need, gear for the horses, camels, buffaloes, cows, etc. Apart from the huge camel market there, on which some thousands of camels are said to change owners, goods for everyday life is on sale, that's being needed in the dessert Thar. This young lady got herself some jewelry. From the expression on her face we can tell that she is very happy. When Hindus bathe in the Pushkar lake at the time of the full moon, they are said to get rid of their karma. Not only the bad karma but also the good. This means they have the chance to begin at zero and according to their deeds in this life they have the chance to get out of this cycle of rebirths which is their aim. Therefore millions of Indians go on a mela, a pilgrimage each year. Explore: 2008-12-01 # 468

Rajuri is growing…

Rajuri is growing…
Made by Elishams
Rajuri is the daughter of Hemaram and Santosh Bhopa. The « Bopa » is a subcaste whose divine duty – or dharma- is to be musicians. The vocal is a retelling of traditional story, story of the gods, of demon such as Ravan, story of men also, who married who, and how, and everything. Hemaram told me he knew much less than his father, and his father much less than the grand-father and so on… At time when no T.V, no DVD was there, they used to sing for Maharadjah and the like, but now the demand is much less. Tradition is in decay. Rajuri has been singing with her father since very young age. Such a beautiful voice ! She said she liked it, but she also would like to go to school, wich she can’t because of lack of money. Well, I know some children who would love to have her life… Visiter Pushkar et le temple de Brahmâ : www.elishams.org/PUSHKAR.html

There probably are better looking men than the warriors of the Punjab and a prouder tribe of men than the legendary fighters of the Rajputana but there cant be many. This typical specimen may have been reduced to holding the reins of a camel to ferry white and brown sahebs around the sand dunes but you don't have to look at his turban or his well maintained mustache to know he is a proud Rajput . . . just look at those eyes . . .

Pushkar 2007. A farmer leads the way in a bright turban followed by a snake charmer in striking purple dress which may be what Carolina Herera dreams of. The snake charmer of purple hues and the strawberry pink head gear is obviously suffering from a severe headache as he walks the encampment road in the animal fair at Pushkar. Another snake charmer follows. It was a beautifully carved ornate bronze bell, hanging from a heavy brass linked chain and it hung outside our cottage in the desert. At first I thought it was meant just for decor but it soon became evident that it was to be used to call the attendants . . . It was early on a winter morning and the heavy fog meant the visibility was very poor but that made for some interesting images too . . .

Curious langurs at dawn on one of the two holy mountains overlooking Pushkar, in Rajasthan, India. I'd walked up during the night to watch the sun rise over the holy lake and, all alone, had settled down with my camera, a drink and a small packet of biscuits. No sooner had I extracted the packet from my pocket than I was surrounded by around 20 eager but friendly langurs! The only distraction was a very fierce dog protecting a temple at the top of the mountain, a dog which tried to launch a whole series of attacks on me before it was light! The langur at the back is, in fact, keeping a keen lookout for the vicious dog!

They bathe in Pushkar lake right in the dessert up there in the north of Rajasthan to get rid of their karma. They are being blessed by a priest, a pujari. A famous temple dedicated to Lord Brahma ब्रह्मा is to be found here. It was here according to mythology where God Brahma dropped three leaves which later on became the lake.

Jiun Der has been telling me about how good this Minolta is. I didn't really believe him... but mate, you got to see it to believe it. I have been playing a few scanners recently - friend's Nikon ED8000, friend's Minolta 5400 and my own V700. I compared results between these scanners and found that for 135 scanning, especially colour neg, Minolta beats the other two hands down and it even beats the minilab scans by one of those Noritsu machines. I am getting excited.
