Earlshall is a castle I would really like to visit some day! It is a most attractive house, hidden behind a spectacular gatehouse at the east end of the village of Leuchars in Fife. Unfortunately it shares a boundary with RAF Leuchars on two sides, so I imagine that an interest in plane spotting and profound deafness would probably be desirable attributes for any owner!! The castle was built on the Z plan by Sir William Bruce in 1546, with a square tower at one end and an oval tower with an unusual straight roof ridge across to a particularly tall chimbly at the other. The guide books say The castle's glory is the Long Gallery, more than 50ft in length, with a ceiling intricately painted with the Seven Virtues and other themes. The panelled rooms contain fine furniture and porcelain, and one of the world's largest collections of Scottish armour. Mary Queen of Scots stayed here (surprise surprise!), but after that heady event, the castle obviously fell into disrepair by the 18th and 19th centuries and remained so until restoration work started in 1891. This wonderful old photo was taken in 1888. The castle's windows are boarded up or missing, and clearly the field (where the topiary garden stands these days) has just been ploughed by the knackered looking horse in the distance!
