Late Roman intercutting graves in Wessex Linear, Boscombe Down, Amesbury

Late Roman intercutting graves in Wessex Linear, Boscombe Down, Amesbury
Made by Wessex Archaeology
A series of 16 intercutting graves that contained 31 inhumation burials. These burials were cut into an existing Bronze Age boundary ditch that lay immediately to the north of the Late Romano-British enclosure cemetery. It is likely that they form part of the same cemetery complex and grave goods suggest that they are of a similar date (3rd-4th centuries AD). The majority were male and several contained grave goods (knives, jewellery etc). For more information visit www.wessexarch.co.uk/projects/wiltshire/boscombe/boscombe...

Late Roman Enclosure Cemetery, Boscombe Down, Amesbury

Late Roman Enclosure Cemetery, Boscombe Down, Amesbury
Made by Wessex Archaeology
Post-excavation photograph (taken from the south) of a small cemetery enclosure that contained 13 inhumation burials of Late Romano-British date (3rd-4th centuries AD). Most of the burials were furnished with grave goods (predominantly pots and coins) and with one exception, they were coffined burials. Graves were arranged in two main rows with a couple of outliers, and were aligned both east-west and north-south. Late Roman Square Barrow Enclosure, Boscombe Down, Amesbury

Late Roman Square Barrow Enclosure, Boscombe Down, Amesbury
Made by Wessex Archaeology
Pre-excavation photo of part of a Romano-British square barrow. The cremation pots and cremated remains came from the dark brown ditch fill. The central dark feature inside the square barrow was thought to be a grave; however no body was found in this feature and it may have been a cenotaph.
