Some stoning detail on Danyun's latin/rhythm dress. The fringing at the bottom of the photo is part of her skirt. Ballroom costumes often involve a lot of rhinestones (the quality of various brands and makers from different countries is debated on online dance forums). One costume rule for syllabus ballroom dance competition is that generally the lower levels are not allowed to wear real costumes, often designated for women as anything decorated with feather or anything that reflects light (sparkles/rhinestones/sequins). I think my favorite categorization declared costumes as anything that would not be worn in public to a regular event.

A heat for one dance event is usually ~90 seconds. Even so, people forget to pretend to look like they're having fun. In most dances and styles, some kind of facial expression involving interest in what you're doing or your partner is required and the default is usually- look happy! (tango is an exception, where ppl often look bored b/c they've been told not to smile. It's supposed to be a dance of passion, but not a happy one.)

Quickstep. The colours for this photo are actually off and too saturated-- the gown is more of a duller green-gray-blue that I thought was terrific and different. The slightly contrasting hem brought out the oceany colour beautifully.

Not from UPenn, but I like the splashiness of the extreme fringe skirt.
