The poet Rabindranath Tagore wrote of Konark: Here the language of stone surpasses the language of man. Konark (or Konarak) (Sanskrit: कोनार्क) is a small town in the state of Orissa, India, on the Bay of Bengal, sixty-five kilometres from Bhubaneswar. It is the site of the 13th-century Sun Temple (also known as the Black Pagoda), built in black granite by King Narasimhadeva I (AD 1236-1264) of the Ganga dynasty. The temple is one of the most important Brahman sanctuaries and is a World Heritage Site. It takes the form of the chariot of Surya (Arka), the sun god, and is heavily decorated with stone carving. On February 16, 1980, Konark lay directly on the path of a total solar eclipse.

One doesnt have to be from konark to be photographed in konark. Partap was from Delhi. His gaze followed me while I shot the sculptures of the konark temple. When i turned my camera towards him, he didnt run away or pose. he stood there just like no one was looking at him, something very unnatural for a kid in that part of the world. I clicked a few shots, and proposed him to see the pics on the camera.. he refused see any of the pics, but declared that he was bored. I chatted with him. He told me that he was in grade fourth and he didnt like the temple. He wanted to play. then his mom called and he ran to her obediently. Happy new year.

I took this picture just before day break, at around 5.45 a.m. on December morning in Puri, India. I saw the girl coming from the horizon, she was way to small for the bicycle that she was riding, and I knew I had to take the picture. I stopped down, pointed by wide angle, and cropped to fit. Unfortunately, I wanted to keep the old men in the back ground, to provide some contrast with the young girl. In hindsight, I should have given the girl somewhere to go. That being said, I think it's still a pretty picture. The pink hue is really a reflection of the light propagating from rising sun.

The biggest and the grandest of all festivals, the highlight is the the sacred journey of images of lord jagannath of puri with brother balabhadra and sister subhadra from main temple to Gundicha Temple, where they remain for nine days. The mammoth wooden chariots carrying the three deities pulled by thousands of devotees present a spectacular scene The Ratha Yatra in puri is a spectacular riot of colour and noise. www.jeffhenig.com

Singhadwara

Singhadwara (Lion's Gate) — the eastern (main) entrance to the Jagannath temple in Puri, Orissa. The sign above is controversial because technically only Hindus, Buddhists, Jains and Sikhs of Indian origin are permitted inside. Even Indira Gandhi, then Prime Minister of India, was denied entry since she was married to a Parsi. There was also a case of Hindus from Bali who were questioned. The proceedings of the temple may be viewed from the nearby Raghunandan Library.

Shot outside the Jagannath Temple in Puri, Orissa, a month after the Rath Yatra (Car Festival). The pillar at the back, the Aruna Stambha, was originally in the Konark Temple and was installed here in the 18th century. In the past, the multi-ton rath's (chariots) sometimes went out of control and would crush people in their way, which led the British to coin the word Juggernaut. This shot was selected as the admin's favorite in .

The loco has some individual decorations applied by either the driving staff or the shed staff. Seen on the South Eastern Railway route from Khurda Road to Tirupati. This train was steam hauled for 24 hours, using WP Pacifics.

Gold Digger - Puri, India Aaah! those damn dust bunnies - they kill me. I was trying to get a deep depth of field, so I increased my F-stop on this one... only to realize that I had dust on my sensor !!!! Pffff. This is what happens when you switch lenses at the beach (not recommended.... :( ). Still, the moment captured was a beautiful one. A fisherman's son, bored out of his mind, contemplating on his next move...

Мне она очень нравится. Какими-то такими - строгими, прямыми и тонкими, статными и невероятно элегантными - наверное, были аристократки при русском дворе. А вот оказывается, это не только воспитывается, но и дается при рождении.

A closer look at the attractive man

A closer look at the attractive man

Hairy chest! Mustache! Thick eyebrows. Beauty mark! Lungi.... shawl wrapped around shoulders. I just love this man. We were passing him in a village and it was just great luck that I got this capture. Also of note: one of the children has a big smudge on his forehead. That is to ward off the evil eye, I think. Smudges make children look less adorable so that evil spirits will ignore.

These multi-ton chariots sometimes go out of control and crush people in their way, which led the British to coin the word Juggernaut. New rath's are made every year for the Rath Yatra. What is amazing about these is that all the pieces fit together as well as dissemble like Lego blocks.

After so long this picture is added as a favourite by one of my flickr friends. This image is captured in the beach of PURI, where I was moving around with my office mates. The boy's name is Dakoo (not kidding) and the girl's name is Chueen. For the uninitiated, dakoo means dacoit in a number of Indian languages. In fact, it is the origin of the English word itself. Shot in Balipada, District Puri, Orissa. PS. Shot using a borrowed Nikon D40. Felt like a King! Didn't really have time to play with settings so just used auto mode.

Our neighbor, a farmer who also works as an electrician in the village. His name is Sadda (pronounced as Saddam without the 'm'). Don't be misled by the figure -- he eats massive amounts of rice daily! Shot in Balipada, District Puri, Orissa, using a borrowed Nikon D40. Felt like a King! Didn't really have time to play with settings so just used auto mode.

Wheel

Wheel
Made by Raveesh Vyas
The Konark Sun Temple was designed in the shape of a chariot with 12 pairs of wheels pulled by 6 horses. This is one such wheel. The diameter of each wheel is close to 10ft (9ft. 9 in. to be precise). The 24 wheels are supposed to represent 24 hours in a day and the 8 spokes in each wheel are believed to be the pahars (a sub-division of a day spanning 3 hours)

Happy Go Lucky Guy :)

Happy Go Lucky Guy :)

I found this fellow ringing his selling bell and singing around on the lonely beaches of Puri. This guy has to cover 6 miles of hot and humid sea cost barefooted to reach the crowded beaches for selling his sweet candies. I didn't bother to change my settings for a better exposer but just clicked to catch his happy go expression.
