Fall in Waltham

Fall in Waltham
Made by Vath.Sok
There are few lakes/ponds around my house in Waltham. After work before it getting dark I wanted to take some few shots around the area as the leaves are getting red already. My idea was to capture the tree Red/Yellow color with the reflection on the water during the sunset, but I was there kind of late as the sun sunk already.

No way out

The state agency that owns this road used to be responsible for the water supply around Boston, and still is responsible for upkeep of rivers. Despite their association with water, they have never figured out how to get their roads to drain.

The dark bee(?) in the foreground is apparently being eaten. That yellow shape on top looks like a face. The eater is probably an ambush bug. Posted to bugguide

As far as I can tell, there are two or three yellow bugs with dark backs -- ambush bugs -- mating while one of them eats a bee or wasp. See also ; bugguide page

Flight

Flight

I went for a walk with the specific goal of catching a dragonfly in flight. Dragonflies and bees persistently kept still on leaves and flowers as long as I kept my camera on, except for this one frame.

Just like I had the wrong lens to catch it. This time I had the 28-105 zoom which I should have had last time, but the action was farther away and I couldn't get the long lens on quickly enough.

This is 1200mm focal length -- 600mm f/4D with a TC-20E teleconverter. The quality sucks, even stopped down to f/16. f/13 and f/11 with correspondingly faster exposures didn't do any better.

I don't know if these are flowers or leaves or seeds. They are lasting a long time. I think the plant is sweetclover, but maybe it sprouted where sweetclover once grew.

Compared to 1200mm, quality is much better at 850mm (600mm lens and 1.4x teleconverter). I don't know how much is my tripod and technique compared to the optics.

Duck

A new species for me, the Ring-necked Duck can be recognized by its ringed bill and unringed neck. This guy was over 100 meters away so he's kind of blurry.

Two hands to hold her, two hands to scratch her back, two hands for lunch. Posted to bugguide

Other people scared it away and I only got one small picture. Seen in Waltham, Massachusetts, on a road near the Charles River.

It was watching me nervously, then it noticed a leaf in front of its mouth so it ate while watching me nervously.

On the Charles opposite Purgatory Cove. Amazing difference in the size of the two eagles, male on the left?

Probably Ischnura verticalis according to bugguide.

The woodpecker was able to grab this morsel from out of the tree. Looks like a juicy grub!

Hey, that's not a lily pad. It didn't have any luck in the 15 minutes I spent watching.

Female Red-winged Blackbird? It's about the right size and there is water very nearby.
