No smiling please, we're British. The strict rules for UK passport photos are somewhat amusing. Among them is the stipulation that hair should not cover the eyes (emo kidzzz are presumably not allowed out of the country) and that the sitter should be looking directly forward, but must not smile. I suppose the no smiling rule is put there because no one smiles when going through customs and the authorities want an accurate picture of the Englishman abroad. Well, I say Fuck the authorities! I am smiling on my passport photo. So sue me. What you see above is not a set of passport photos, however. The original photo (see comments below) was taken outside a photo booth (usual thing: mobile phone at arm's length) at Blackfriar's station. I spent a fairly long time experimenting with the image, trying to work out how the warp, shear and perspective tools in PS can be utilized. (Yes, I finally got PhotoShop). After getting the main composite to a satisfactory state, I placed it on a texture provided by , and added some lighting and shadows. I'm particularly pleased with the subtle but important lens flare at top right that makes the thing look like a glossy print. You can see it better LARGE

I've wanted to use this title for its amusing double meaning for quite a while. I've also been sitting on this photo for a couple of weeks, but saved it until now for what should be obvious reasons. The original photo (see below) was taken at Blackfriars station as I stood by a billboard advert for the 118 118 Directory Enquiries hotline. (I love the moustachioed porn star relics used in the marketing campaign). I've become fascinated by cropping and enlarging in the past couple of days. Photoshop is pretty good for increasing the size of images without creating horrible JPEG artifacts, so you'll probably see more fake close-ups like this in the coming days. I wish it could be seen at the size of a billboard, but you'll have to make do with this 1024px version.
