Cool Pigeon

Cool Pigeon
Made by mang M
Pigeons and doves constitute the bird family Columbidae within the order Columbiformes, which include some 300 species of near passerines. In general parlance the terms dove and pigeon are used somewhat interchangeably. In ornithological practice, there is a tendency for dove to be used for smaller species and pigeon for larger ones, but this is in no way consistently applied, and historically the common names for these birds involve a great deal of variation between the terms dove and pigeon. This family occurs worldwide, but the greatest variety is in the Indomalaya and Australasia ecozones. Young doves and pigeons are called squabs. Pigeons and doves are stout-bodied birds with short necks, and have short slender bills with a fleshy cere. The species commonly referred to just as pigeon is the feral Rock Pigeon, common in many cities. Doves and pigeons build relatively flimsy nests from sticks and other debris, which may be placed in trees, on ledges or on the ground, depending on species. They lay one or two eggs, and both parents care for the young, which leave the nest after 7 to 28 days. Doves feed on seeds, fruit and plants. Unlike most other birds (but see flamingo), the doves and pigeons produce crop milk, which is secreted by a sloughing of fluid-filled cells from the lining of the crop. Both sexes produce this highly nutritious substance to feed to the young. Today's Bible Verse: Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the LORD . . . 1 CORINTHIANS 15:58 NASB

Mud Sale at SM Department Store

Mud Sale at SM Department Store
Made by Ravemaster (*Enjoying the vacation trip!!!*)
Besides the turmoil that typhoon Pepeng wrought in our Municipality were the shattered dreams of the townspeople. The severity of the damage is record high and utterly demoralizing. The figures that could define the aftermath of the onslaught are as follows: 10 casualties from the flooding. 143 families were left homeless P115 M estimated damage for crops, vegetations and livestock Hundreds of million estimated damage on business establishments and other structures. Amidst the chaos though several charitable organizations and individuals offered help. But more than their temporal relief was the gesture of care and love for us which has rekindled our spirit to stand on our own and strive once again. Notwithstanding all of these, life must go on regardless of the circumstances. As we therefore glide throughout this horrendous experience, we are optimistic to bounce back soon. Enthused with the Filipino spirit of resiliency and faith to the Almighty, a bright new day for Rosales awaits. But there is nothing better when all of us, from any walks of life move and work altogether to pick up Rosales from pieces. The spirit and slogan is captured in the words of Mayor Revita: Rosales, Kapit-Kamay Babangon Tayo!

This is the way to San Jose

This is the way to San Jose
Made by nigel@hornchurch
The City of San Jose in the Philippines is located at the southern end of the Cordillera Central mountain range on the northern island of Luzon. It is noteworthy because it is where you have to go to when travelling from the west side of the mountain range to the east (and vice-versa). The Cordillera Central mountain range is un-navigatable and the trip from one side of the island to the other takes you very far south (practically to Manila) before you can travel north again to the other side. There is talk of a tunnel through the mountain. I fear that it is just talk as this project would be very expensive. This was taken as we were leaving San Jose on the way from Santiago in the east to Vigan in the west. It is a good rest point as it is roughly half-way between the two cities. I know that on Flickr we are forced to use the Yahoo maps - but really, for some parts of the world, they are quite useless. Click the map link below on the right and try to zoom in to see some detail. No chance. When I set this geolocation using Aperture and Google maps I could see the street detail perfectly - but not with Yahoo.

Juan VIII:3-1

Leopard 24 flying under a double rainbow over the beautiful Philippine landscape. On the other side of our aircraft in this photo was the monument erected in honor of the tens of thousands of Filipino and American prisoners that were forced to march the 100 miles across the northern island of Luzon from Bataan to their POW camp at Camp O’Donnell, on what has since come to be known as the Bataan Death March. For this photo we were racing an incoming rain shower to LZ Fort Magsaysay to drop off some supplies for the guys down there training. I was trying to get some good photos of the memorial as we flew past, but it was already covered by rain, so I went back over to my side of the helo just in time to witness and capture this double rainbow.

More Sidecars, More Deisel Engines

More Sidecars, More Deisel Engines

The majority of transportation is vans, jeepneys, and sidecars like the ones above. All three of these types of transportation have diesel engines which makes the smog and air quality in the cities of the Philippines terrible. I thought Los Angeles was bad, but it's nothing compared to Manila. Flying in I could see the cloud of smoke. And there is no valley or mountains keeping the smog in like LA. There are just too many people who live in the Philippines and too many cars driving around constantly. _ Hasselblad 500CM Carl Zeiss Planar 80mm f/2.8 T* Kodak T-Max 400 (120)

I had a long conversation with these men. We all became very well aquainted. The things they were telling me about the Philippines were quite shocking. A days work is about 300 Pesos which equals to about $6. They said that every politician in the Philippines is corrupt. One corrupt official goes out and another one comes right in. When voting, each contender is corrupt. View Large _ Hasselblad 500C/M Carl Zeiss Planar 80mm f/2.8 T* Fujifilm Pro 800Z (120)

The Hospitality

Nueva Acija, Philippines 2010 The Filipino culture is quite amazing. Every house that you go into, you will be served food. It's really quite an experience. Every family has such hospitality. This one in particular was roasting lechon (pig) for nine hours before we came. It was delicious, but not something I would normally eat. They roast it for the skin specifically, and yes, the skin is amazing. _ Hasselblad 500CM Carl Zeiss S-Planar 120mm f/5.6 Fujifilm Velvia 100F [RVP] (120)

We went to see Aimee's grandfathers grave. I'll be showing more of that later, but this young lad followed us/me through the cemetary. He, like everyone else in the Philippines, was mesmorized by my beard. Everyone would point and laugh. I didn't see one other person that had a beard in the Philippines. Just me. So naturally, he was very interested in what we were doing, (me) being foriegn and all. _ Hasselblad 500CM Carl Zeiss Planar 80mm f/2.8 T* Kodak T-Max 400 (120)

We sat on a bamboo bench on a slope that overlooked a duck pond. We just got done sharing a meal of sinigang bangus (tamarind stew with milkfish) with our Filipino counterparts. He was telling me of his plans to take his wife Gerri to visit her family in the Philippines after we return from the deployment. We then debated whether the waterfowl swimming nearby was a goose or a swan.

The house on the background is the main house. It is unique (for me, at least) in a way that the ground floor is open, with the pool, karaoke and bar. To the left of this photo (which I couldn't get because it was full of patients at that time) is a small lake and manggahan. This rest-house is where we made our tule-mission last May. Lucky kids.

This is the front of the main house. The background, (with the model) is the guest house. The pool takes around more than a night to fill up. The water is then used to water their hacienda. The family who owns this gives back to the community with their yearly tule mission. I wonder if they would run out of kids to do their yearly mission.
