Millennium Park. view with B l a c k M a g i c Cloud Gate, a public sculpture by Indian-born British artist Anish Kapoor, is the centerpiece of the AT&T Plaza in Millennium Park within the Loop community area of Chicago, Illinois. The sculpture and AT&T Plaza are located on top of Park Grill, between the Chase Promenade and McCormick Tribune Plaza & Ice Rink. Constructed between 2004 and 2006, the sculpture is nicknamed The Bean because of its legume-like shape. Made up of 168 stainless steel plates welded together, its highly polished exterior has no visible seams. It is 33 feet by 66 feet by 42 feet (10 m × 20 m × 13 m), and weighs 110 short tons (99.8 t; 98.2 long tons). Kapoor's design was inspired by liquid mercury and the sculpture's surface reflects and distorts the city's skyline. Visitors are able to walk around and under Cloud Gate's 12-foot (3.7 m) high arch. On the underside is the omphalos, a concave chamber that warps and multiplies reflections. The sculpture builds upon many of Kapoor's artistic themes, although many tourists simply view the sculpture and its unique reflective properties as a photo-taking opportunity. The sculpture was the result of a design competition. After Kapoor's design was chosen, numerous technological concerns regarding the design's construction and assembly arose, in addition to concerns regarding the sculpture's upkeep and maintenance. Various experts were consulted, some of whom believed the design could not be implemented. Eventually, a feasible method was found, but the sculpture's construction fell behind schedule. It was unveiled in an incomplete form during the Millennium Park grand opening celebration in 2004, before being concealed again while it was completed. Cloud Gate was formally dedicated on May 15, 2006, and has since gained considerable popularity, both domestically and internationally.

Willie Pickens

If you ever needed proof that Mr. Steinway knows how to build sturdy pianos... You gotta catch Willie Pickins in action. He played last week at the Truth Be Told: Celebrating the Legacy of Von Freeman event in Millenium Park at the Pritzker Pavilion... I've enjoyed watchin' Willie play so hard I could swear the piano couldn't take anymore! He was on fire last week too. I'll never forget the first time I popped Willie... at the Jazz Showcase where he was playing with Solitaire Miles. He gave me this look after I did a closeup... kinda like 'WHAT are you doin' man'... and then I showed him the shot on the back of the camera and I was treated to his big laugh and warm smile for the first time. Willie loved it. Then Willie yelled over to the drummer... Robert Shy and told him that he should let me take his picture... so I got to pop Robert really good too. The man is downright volcanic on that piano! Willie's a great guy... he's got a big laugh, a warm and friendly presence... an infectious smile and man... I have never seen anybody play a piano like Willie Pickens! If you haven't had a chance to catch Willie performing you really should. You'll thank me for turnin' you on to him. You can read more about Willie on his website here: www.williepickensjazz.com/ Hey Willie... if you see this could you shoot me an email... that card I gave you after the show's got some info on it that I need... viewminder@yahoo.com Faces on the street Chicago 7.28.11 35mm 1.8 expo and contrast twinkled a little

Frank Gehry, winner of the National Medal of Art, applied his signature style to this revolutionary outdoor concert venue. The Pavilion stands 120-feet high, with a billowing headdress of brushed stainless steel ribbons that frame the stage opening and connect to an overhead trellis of crisscrossing steel pipes. The trellis supports the sound system, which spans the 4,000 fixed seats and the Great Lawn, which accommodates an additional 7,000 people. This state-of-the-art sound system, the first of its kind in the country, was designed to mimic the acoustics of an indoor concert hall by distributing enhanced sound equally over both the fixed seats and the lawn. The Jay Pritzker Pavilion is home to the Grant Park Music Festival and other free concerts and events. It was named in memory of Chicago business leader Jay Pritzker, who with his wife Cindy, established the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1979. How do you make everyone - not just the people in the seats, but the people sitting 400 feet away on the lawn - feel good about coming to this place to listen to music? And the answer is, you bring them into it. You make the proscenium larger; you build a trellis with a distributed sound system. You make people feel part of the experience. -Frank Gehry www.millenniumpark.org/artandarchitecture/jay_pritzker_pa...

“The Bean” at Millennium Park

“The Bean” at Millennium Park
Made by The Artist on the Road
Marilyn and I stepped off the Blue Line metro at Washington in downtown Chicago to visit Millennium Park. Rain had already dampened the streets but ominous clouds were still filling the gaps between tall buildings. With no umbrella in our bags, we were caught off guard. The closer we are to the Lake, Marilyn reminded me, the more unpredictable the weather. As we walked towards the Park, it began to rain so we ducked into an enclosed stairwell. Luckily, it wasn't long before the rain paused enough for us to face the elements once more. Our first stop, “The Bean” sculpture as it's nicknamed (real name: Cloud Gate) is quite spectacular. I watched as people laughed and smiled seeing their reflections twist and turn in the sculpture's mirrored surface. Looking up into the interior of the sculpture gives an otherworldly view, with light and shadow playing off one another to make unusual, twisted shapes. I parked myself away from the crowd to draw this view of The Bean's northwest side.

View On Black The really fun thing about the pavilion is that it's made of stainless steel and they shine different colored lights on it all the time, with the colors constantly shifting. Even when there's no music going on there, there's always something entertaining. Here's what Frank Gehry, the designer, said about it: How do you make everyone - not just the people in the seats, but the people sitting 400 feet away on the lawn - feel good about coming to this place to listen to music? And the answer is, you bring them into it. You make the proscenium larger; you build a trellis with a distributed sound system. You make people feel part of the experience. -Frank Gehry Info here.

Man that was a sweet soundin' bunch of jazz... Good times! That sound system at the Pritzker Pavillion is really somethin' else. I hope Von is feelin' better... but in his absence Mike Raynor did a great job on the drums and as the emcee for the evening. You called it on the 'dancing girls.' Hey... I'd really like to hook up for that gig we talked about... I think I gave the card that I wrote your info down to Willie Pickins after the show by accident... And I don't think Willie checks his email... He plays a wicked piano though. Dude's always on fiyah! Throw me an email at viewminder@yahoo.com and we could set it all up. I got what you were sayin' on how it needed to be done... I will nail those shots like no one else man. There's only one Viewminder. Here's the first one. FRONT PAGE EXPLORE August 20, 2009 its been weeks after weeks maybe months that there was a decent sunset or sunrise in Miami. which is not normal for Miami or as long as i remember never happened before. i have been traveling a lot around the country and noticed the same thing. ugly weather. For last 2 weeks i actually went out and sat there for a sunset but all i got was huge clouds covering up the sky and poor sun being eaten by these monster clouds well before sunset time. Not sure if i am the only one thinking this or someone else has noticed this too. Any input will be appreciated.happy shooting folks. Mayor Rahm Emanuel Gets the Viewminder Treatment

Mayor Rahm Emanuel Gets the Viewminder Treatment
Made by Viewminder
I've been wanting to pop Chicago's Mayor Rahm Emanuel for a while. I'd been laying elaborate plans. Then I just ran into him by accident! Last night I siezed the opportunity. It should be known that I am quite the master of the 'bogus press pass.' Actually it's not even a bogus press pass... it's just one of my Viewminder cards in a luggage tag holder on a nylon lanyard around my neck. You'd laugh if you read it. But no one ever does. They just look 'at' it. It gives me superpowers to get into places. I got about a foot away from the Mayor... and then I asked him for a closeup... He gave me some good shots... but his security didn't really seem to like me givin' him the 'Viewminder treatment.' I wanted that 'face filling the whole frame shot' and I never got it. I'll get it. C'mon Rahm... give it up!

Andrew Bird at Sound Check

Andrew Bird at Sound Check

So Andrew Bird comes into where I work often. The first time this happened I told him I really liked his music and grinned at him like a crazy person. Now he comes in about once a month and I say hello. So I'm pretty sure when I took this picture he recognized me as the crazy grin girl. You can't really tell in the scanned version of this Polaroid, but he is definitely shooting me the awkward face. I took this picture around 3 p.m. during sound check and there was not another soul around me. The fact that Andrew Bird was looking at me as I took his picture was so unnerving that I only took three (one of which corrupted on my CF card).

Last night I had to go into Chicago for a reception. That had to be the worst traffic I've ever sat in! It didn't help that there was a hockey game and a basketball game that night. Oh well... My husband came with me - but was out exploring Millenium Park while I went to that reception. I did leave early so that I could do a little photography too. I liked the curves of the Pritzker Pavilion and the interesting colored light reflected off the metal surface. When I looked at the pavilion back in February, it reminded me of other Frank Gehry designs...and wouldn't you know it...this was designed by Frank Gehry.

I was watching these kids run around and play at the Pritzker Pavilion today and wanted to capture some of the joy of childhood... I was panning as this boy ran down the aisle and pulled the shutter as I saw him leap. I hadn't noticed that he was attempting to hurdle a rope and was aghast to see him land shoulder and head first on the hard concrete. His parents were nearby (his brother or friend had been right behind him) and he seemed to be ok (not bleeding), but very tearful. This was the one shot I took of the whole incident, and I hope it doesn't come across all schadenfreund-y for me to post this...

You have to get up and out early to beat all the other tourists to get shots or they walk right in front of you! I only had 6 days to try and get in as much sight seeing as I could! I had the idea that if I showed up early at the Cloud Gate AKA The Bean I could beat the rest of the photographers and people who just want to touch this thing! The bad part about touching something like this is that you don't know what the other people have been doing with their hands! 110 tons and 66 feet long and 33 feet high! The only guy in the shot is on the left to give you some idea of the size of this thing!
