"Steadfast remained my heart in adversity"

Stantvastich is ghebleven mijn hert in teghenspoet This picture shows part of a statue of William the Silent (the 'Prince of Orange'), who was the main leader of the Dutch revolt against the Spanish that set off the Eighty Years' War and resulted in the formal independence of the Dutch Republic (the predecessor of the Netherlands) in 1648. The quote at the bottom is a line from the thirteenth stanza of the Dutch national anthem the 'Wilhelmus', which was written in William's honour. It's the oldest national anthem in the world. ** end of lesson ;-) **
