Before the Second World War, the city of Exeter was quite low, and very medieval in aspect. Then Hitler decided on some remodelling, and the whole of the medieval centre was pulverised. Acres of buildings disappeared. After the war, many cities like Coventry, Plymouth and, of course, London, threw up buildings in a hurry. In Exeter it meant a number of frankly hideous 1960s blocks. Now, the whole of the Princesshay area has been rebuilt in a much more pleasant manner - and what I really like is, you can see the cathedral again, much more as the city used to be. Oh, and there's going to be an Apple shop here too. Smile. Smile. Smile!

This is a section of the Roman eastern wall of Exeter, looking up towards the tower at the easternmost point. There's still about 80% of the wall still standing in Exeter - not that you'd know it, with the amount of buildings apparently erected specifically to hide the city's history!
