Butlin's Filey - on the main road at 5 am

Butlin's Filey - on the main road at 5 am

This picture has appeared before on my photostream ... but as a scan of a monochrome print, and with a few slight differences in the far distance - there's a figure missing in the print which appears on the slide, and there's much less detail in the print. So what happened? I suspect that I must have used the slide to make a paper negative some time in the early 1980s, when I started experimenting with printing. This was subsequently retouched to take out the figure, which I probably thought was a speck of dust, and then used it to make a positive print, very much later scanned. A high-resolution scan looks as though there are a number of figures converging on a building in the distance. The notes on the lid of the slide box, written immediately after I got the pictures back from development, read on the main road at 5 am, so I would guess that these figures were staff hurrying to the start of their morning shift. What was I doing around at that time of the morning? I remember that well: I had a stinking cold, and couldn't sleep, so I got up to wander the camp, and probably by chance, took my camera.

Butlin's Filey - the chair lift, probably 31 August 1973

Butlin's Filey - the chair lift, probably 31 August 1973

We went up to Butlin's at Filey for the week 29 August to 5 September 1973 (school term started later then than they do now). We already knew the Bognor camp well, from various dancing weekends there. We therefore expected something similar at Filey, but with the opportunity to do a bit of touring on the Moors. There was actually quite a contrast. Filey was HUGE by comparison, and the weather was pretty bleak. It also turned out that the camp was hosting a children's dancing festival that week, so the whole place was seethingly busy with sequins, multi-layer petticoats and beehive hairdo's (on the girls and most of their mothers) and bow ties and Brylcreem (on the boys and their fathers). One feature at Filey was the chair lift, which ran across the camp. For the first couple of days there were long queues for this, but by (I think) the Monday the novelty had worn off and you could walk straight on. These are a few pictures of the camp, taken from on high.

Scarborough & District 604

Scarborough & District Volvo Olympian/NC Palatine P604SAT (604) seen at Primrose Valley having provided enjoyable traction from Scarborough on the 14:06 120 to Bridlington. Based on earlier sightings I had resigned myself to President 680 on this journey however it was driven away by a fitter upon arrival in Scarborough with this replacing it for a round trip (technically that means 604 was working for Brid at this point) despite two Geminis being spare. This was a rather rushed photo, I intended to take a better one however it drove off before that was possible, hopefully the water on the lense highlights how much it had been and indeed still was raining! That poor unfortunate man was probably wondering why such a heinous monstrosity was taking photos of him!

As is custom, Hull have loaned 4 Presidents to relevant depots to cover operation of the service with 680 and 683 going to Brid and 684 and 685 going to Scarborough.

Mothers Union Caravan Blessing Ceremony 1

It was my pleasure on Saturday to attend the opening of a new caravan at Filey's Primrose Valley caravan park. I was a guest as it is my mother who is a member of the Mother's Union, who arranged the event. I didn't know anyone beforehand, but they were all very nice people. Quite a few had their cameras ready, which ranged from old film ones to newer digital ones.

These caravans are amazing! Inside there are so many rooms! In fact they seem better than my house! All nicely decorated inside, with plenty of the basic modern fittings you might want, like a full-sized cooker, shower, large seating area with fitted sofas, and so on. It's surprising how much they can fit inside.

Picture taken in Filey, England. I got up at 4am with my mum to watch this spectacular feat. We got to the cliff edge for about 4:30, sun started to rise at about 5am, then we went back to bed at 5:30am. Absolutely amazing. I would favourite this picture myself if I could.

I wasn't sure what to do with this, tried different PS versions, including a b+w with selective colour. I warmed to this version, a sepia layer at around 50% opacity decluttr
