Village greens and thatched roofs

Village greens and thatched roofs
Made by English study trip, March 2008
This sight met us as we travelled from Wells to Cheddar. If anyone can find the spot on Google Earth I'd be happy to hear where it is exactly - was it the B3135, the B3371 or the B3134? Is it Kite's Croft? Green Ore? Priddy? I'm pretty sure it's not Chewton Mendip and know it's not Wookey Hole or Nanny Hurn's Lane. It's a reminder of how roads used to be there to serve the farms rather than centres of urban settlement (or cars). The village green here also serves the farm rather than the village cricket team. The thatched structure in the centre of the picture looks like it is for storing sections of pens, or hurdles, which will be pushed into the ground when the farmers gather to market their livestock. You can buy these hurdles made out of metal on eBay for a couple of hundred euros, but they're still handmade from hazel by people like Darren Cuff: darrencuffhurdlemaker.co.uk/default.aspx

Drovers road

Drovers road
Made by Trevor Hare
Ancient drovers road in Priddy, Somerset. Dating from the time the annual sheep fair was moved from the city of Wells to Priddy after the Black Death in AD 1348. The area was an active lead mining centre from pre-Roman times until about 1900 and there are bronze age burial mounds and circles about a mile from here. A few miles down the road (in Cheddar and Wookey) there were human remains showing this area has been continuously habitated for 9000 - 11,000 years at least.

Church of St Lawrence, Priddy, Somerset

High up on the Mendips, and still with a fair bit of snow around, but all parts knit together to form a perfect if over-restored church. Here the tower is much more humble than at Chewton Mendip, but with a pierced parapet and eight pinnacles for added sophistication. Inside a nice Perp wooden screen across chancel and N aisle, a stone Perp pulpit and a Jacobean wooden pulpit.

A burning hot day

Don't know how it happened but a big fire broke out when I was damselfly watching at Priddy Mineries today. The flames were pretty big and fast moving, fanned by the wind. It took the fire brigade - about 8 engines or so - a while to get it under control. Scary stuff especially as I'd been up on that land earlier... DSC_0059_20110410_059_fire

Priddy Hurdles

Priddy Hurdles. These hurdles are a symbolic reconstruction of the original collection which were stored here to form the pens for the sheep fair which moved from Wells to Priddy in 1348 at the outbreak of the black death. The fair is now held annually on the nearest Wednesday to the original date of 27th August.

Perching on a headstone in the church yard at Priddy. Hurrah for digital zoom! I just couldn't get close enough to the tiny thing without it.

Quite a nice stop, but the light was wrong for the real shot there. That'll do as a reminder for me to go back :)
